........to throw in his ten pence worth about Gaza and fulfil his allotted role as fawning acolyte to President Trump in return for being allowed to sit at the Big Table.

Might be nice if Sir Keir could stay in the UK long enough to get to grips with problems on the home front. He always seems to be flitting abroad!

NotSpaghetti Sat 11-Oct-25 23:47:53

The summit will be attended by more than 20 "world lead leaders" you know!
It's not just us and America.

We need to see the follow through after phase 1.

PaynesGrey Sat 11-Oct-25 23:54:10

Exactly. Trump will lead the Sharm El Sheikh Peace Summit alongside Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi with leaders from more than 20 countries in attendance.

Ministers from Germany, France, Italy, Qatar, the UAE, Jordan, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Indonesia, Spain, Japan, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Hungary, India, El Salvador, Cyprus, Greece, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Canada will be there.

Why do you think the UK should not be represented?

Westminster only reconvenes this week after conference season.

Thank you NotSpaghetti and PaynesGrey.

I hope we are returning to the days when we ignored those who are simply performance politicians and applauded those getting on with the job.

So who do you think should be PM and, if they were how would you like them to behave in this situation?

Because that’s the way of the world now with anyone who has a high profile, from celebrities to prime ministers.
You have to be seen to be either for or against a movement/ idea/ campaign.
You never see a leader say i see both sides because if you did the media would be over you like a rash and you would be yesterday’s man/ woman.

Casdon Sun 12-Oct-25 08:36:20

Whoever the PM of the UK was, it would be very worrying to me if they did not prioritise a summit for the Gaza Peace Plan, with over 20 other world leaders also in attendance, over domestic commitments which are ongoing.

Sarnia Sun 12-Oct-25 08:50:11

Starmer does have plenty to see to in his own country and other world leaders very likely have the same but he does need to be seen at something as important as a Peace Summit.

NotSpaghetti Sun 12-Oct-25 09:13:10

AND he is involved in the phases too.
There is a lot to be done.

These are REALLY BIG issues as it hasn't yet been decided how things will move forward.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 12-Oct-25 09:16:15

The world is right to place huge expectations on this meeting. I hope so much that they live up to these expectations.

I’m sure the electorate of Clacton would say the same thing about their MP.

The role of Prime Minister is a multi functional one, and part of the global stage.

Yes, I await alternatives with hope in my heart.

Nigel?

Bring back Boris?

Tommeh?

Yes.

Elegran Sun 12-Oct-25 09:40:56

It might be nice too if those who criticise him for taking part in world affairs - along with 20 other leaders of their nations - could lift their eyes a little to see how international events inevitably have consequences in this country. If the PM ignored that, and so did half the other leaders, the decisions made at the meeting could be disastrous for us.

The globe is shrinking fast, and no-one can be isolationist any more. The US is an illustration of that. Trump's efforts to make the US into an island are already making life there worse, not better, after only a matter of months.

ronib Sun 12-Oct-25 09:51:34

I don’t suppose Starmer will be out of the country for more than a few days. He’s probably going to state the UK’s commitment to the security of Gaza in some form or other. Troops? Maybe not. Money? Wait and see.

ronib Sun 12-Oct-25 09:59:38

Just realised that Hamas won’t be taking part in the talks and Israel hasn’t said. So
how binding will the talks be on the two main protagonists? Stupid question I know…

nanna8 Sun 12-Oct-25 10:47:24

Of course Starmer needs to be there. Much though he isn’t my favourite politician I do think he is good on the international stage and seems to be more respected there. A future job for him when he stops being PM ?

lixy Sun 12-Oct-25 11:00:40

Yes, Nanna8, that seems to be the Labour way, and good that the UK has a chance to repair some of the damage from historical misjudgements.

windmill I find your choice of words inflammatory and harsh. The UK has a ‘place at the big table’ in NATO and the UN as of right, regardless of the PM. No need to be so scathing.

AGAA4 Sun 12-Oct-25 11:23:32

I agree with most other posters Keir Starmer has to be at that meeting representing the UK.

Iam64 Sun 12-Oct-25 11:27:16

I’m relieved to see the majority recognise the need for Starmer to represent us at this summit
He’s been needed and useful on the world stage. Yes I’d like to see more of him here but even a PM can’t be in two places at once

Allira Sun 12-Oct-25 11:30:26

I'd be rather worried if the Prime Minister of the UK was not included in this summit.

If he cloned himself I expect that would be wrong too!

Maremia Sun 12-Oct-25 11:54:54

The UK has to play a part in the process.

ronib Sun 12-Oct-25 12:14:39

Is the process an agreed Trump plus 20 countries setting out conditions for peaceful coexistence in Israel and Palestine?

Whitewavemark2 Sun 12-Oct-25 12:48:06

There is a good article in the observer written by a former speaker of the Knesset - Avraham Burg - who argues that the majority of Israelis reject Netanyahus warmongering and want a much bigger inter gratin with the Middle Eastern states. They no longer wish to remain isolated as they have done in the past.

That is exactly what I am hearing from friends.

I hope very much that this can be achieved as Netanyahu’s endless conflict, and who constantly seeks out enemies can never prosper.
