Maccabi Tel Aviv football club banned

Aston Villa have banned the fans from Tel Aviv from attending the game. They say that after the violence in Amsterdam when the Jewish club was there that they don't feel they can provide the level of security needed to keep fans and nearby residents safe.
There have been clashes in Norway and Italy when Israel compete.
Aston Villa say it is not antisemitism but just being safety conscious.
Maybe another way could have been found without the ban?

Well said

Other clubs have been banned because of the unacceptable behaviour of some fans.
It is not a new concept.

No it isn't but it seems Israel is a special case to some.
Those senior people trying to lift the ban need to grow a spine and not be threatened by antisemitism. This is about public safety not religion.

Precisely. Some football teams are notorious for having fans that travel around causing trouble and Maccabee is one of them. Why should they hide behind an accusation of anti semitism? I have always been thoroughly ashamed when England fans have caused trouble abroad; I’m trying to remember if they have actually been banned at times and, if they have I would fully support that. It’s as if someone has moved the goal posts when it comes to accusing anyone from Israel of wrongdoing because of the fear of the antisemitism accusation. Each case should be viewed on it’s own merits imo.

'Injured the police', but it has been said upthread, that's part of their job.
Well then, they should have a say in what should happen.
At the moment, they seem to be for the ban.

bmacca these are the concerns from the police. They are worried about the people living in that area and their property.
It seems madness to actually invite trouble.
This has been blown up out of proportion by those who should know better.

I’ve been a Villa supporter since 1970 and regularly attend matches. Villa Park is an old fashioned style stadium, which is located in a densely packed residential area about 3 miles from the city centre. There are no wide concourses around the ground, or large coach parking areas away from the ground. It is surrounded by houses & narrow roads.

I have witnessed fighting at matches in the past but the only recent time was the Legia Warsaw game. Their fans had already caused trouble in the city centre, then turned up to the ground without tickets. They attacked and injured the police and caused considerable damage at the ground & in the surrounding area.
I imagine West Mids police had this in mind, as well as the Maccabi fans racist & unruly behaviour, most recently in Amsterdam. Maccabi football club do not appear to have made any effort to investigate their own Ultra group who instigate this behaviour & stop them from travelling.

I sincerely hope the ban isn’t overturned and that Villa fans and local residents are not put at risk.

Are you saying that Maccabi fans have never protested, caused mayhem, disruption and danger Allira?

growstuff Sun 19-Oct-25 13:37:08

Allira

But, in this case, the reason given is that the Maccabi fans coming here could mean that other groups would be out on the streets protesting, causing mayhem, disruption and danger to the general public. 🤔

Really? Where has that reason been given? Look at Maccabi's history.

To answer your question @ 9.42 Oreo yes I do think all those leaders are wrong and if heaven forbid the ban is lifted, there is trouble and Maccabi Tel Aviv 'fans' are responsible, what will you and those leaders have to say then?

I will still think it was the right thing to do, not to ban the whole fanbase of an Israeli team for poor behaviour from a few.In Amsterdam only ten maccabi fans were arrested and as far as I know none were charged.Various Amsterdam residents have just received prison sentences. Muslim taxi drivers and others collaborated on SM to go out on a Jew hunt there.
We can’t allow a minority here to not allow Jews, Israeli Jews in this case to dictate. The police must manage things as they always have to do.

What about Athens and Serbia? Maccabi needs to get its act together and sort its "fanatics" out. It wasn't just Holland.

Allira

Has anyone on here actually been to a football match at League level?

Yes.

Maremia Sun 19-Oct-25 12:23:27

Yes, but not sure if it counts. On holiday in Ireland. Fabulous weather. Great crowd. They also have different rules, and it seemed to flow much better than our soccer games I watch on TV.

Allira Sun 19-Oct-25 12:21:33

I went with a boyfriend when I was about 18.
😴
The boyfriend didn't last long either.

ronib Sun 19-Oct-25 12:16:58

Well that was a lot more exciting than my first and only visit… I didn’t have a clue as to what was happening. My next door neighbour took me so that was kind.Wwm2

Whitewavemark2 Sun 19-Oct-25 12:09:32

The last time I went to a football match I threw a coin into a sheet being carried around the football stadium, and got a bag of peanuts in return - that was the most exciting part of my day.

I was about 8

AGAA4 Sun 19-Oct-25 11:29:16

Premier League matches too 😄

Galaxy Sun 19-Oct-25 11:28:35

I support Sunderland so I am an expert in disappointment.

AGAA4 Sun 19-Oct-25 11:27:43

I've been to league matches. Three or four so must be an expert 🤔

Galaxy Sun 19-Oct-25 11:22:47

Yes me a number of times.

Smileless2012 Sun 19-Oct-25 11:21:59

Neither have I.

ronib Sun 19-Oct-25 11:20:29

No never. Rugby is much more exciting….Allira

Smileless2012 Sun 19-Oct-25 11:05:25

That's what happens isn't it Allira. When fans from other clubs have been banned it isn't because they're all hooligans, it's because those that are have made them all unwelcome.

The difference in this case are the accusations that this decision is due to antisemitism and I for one don't agree that it is.
