I'm sure we are all aware now that Reform MP Sarah Pochlin, made the following remarks on that Talk TV phone in.

Health Secretary Wes Streeting, quite rightly, imo, has criticised Reform MP Sarah Pochin (Runcorn and Helsby) for what he called "racist" language:

after she complained about adverts being "full of black people, full of Asian people

She gave a mealy mouthed apology "my remarks were "phrased poorly"
but maintained that many adverts were "unrepresentative of British society".

Streeting said yesterday Pochin had only said sorry "because she's been caught and called out".

its one of those "I'm sorry if" apologies that mean nothing - she is racist at heart.

The adverts we see on TV are all so very different - they are targeted, for example on ITV 3 we get a series of almost complete white older people in baths with doors, sitting in idealised arm chairs, etc etc.

On programmes watched by whole groups of people the content reflects our society as a whole. which is multi cultural:

and has the benefit, I believe for young people particularly, who don.t live in multi-cultural areas like mine, of showing that people from varied backgrounds do ordinary things like insure cars or watch TV or mix across cultures with popcorn and a take out (just to give some typical examples)

One has to ask, why does she mind so much?

What she said isn't even that insidious or subtle racism or the kind of racism people carry but aren't necessarily aware of

(ie assumptions being made becuase you dont actually know people from different backgrounds)

it was full out in your face "us and THEM" revealing her and her Reform compatriots in all their prejudice and hatred.

She should be taken to task by Farage. Is she isnt, what does that say about him?

The simple answer is not to watch adverts. I gave up years ago, as a way of getting more housework done when I was working and tired in the evening, I’d get up when the adverts came on, and do a couple of minutes of dishwasher loading, or whatever. It’s stuck, I’ve never watched an advert for about 20 years, except at the cinema where there’s no escape.

Aren't you good!!
😲

We do record some and skip through the adverts.
Usually DH silences them anyway.

I'm sure the companies advertising on TV would think we're a lost cause as far as selling goes!

Go on Oreo. Send that to her, to use next time.
She'll be so grateful.

We all know Farage’s classic answer when he was challenged over his own racist remarks. It depends what you mean by racist.

Pochin said: It drives me mad when I see adverts full of black people, full of Asian people, full of anything other than white.

What is this if not racist?

I don't think she was being racist. She could probably have expressed herself differently but I believe she just wanted to say these ads are not proportionate as is born out by the Chanel 4 report.
The Times also reported that adverts over represent Black people whilst ignoring the over 70s

Allira Mon 27-Oct-25 15:49:54

Over lunch, I played back a programme I recorded on Sky Arts yesterday evening.

One niche channel does not represent advertising as a whole over the sector.

Maremia Mon 27-Oct-25 15:49:37

We are not calling her names. We are calling her out.

She did use the wrong phraseology to my mind, but that doesn’t mean that either she or the caller-in to the radio show was wrong about the adverts now being proportionally skewed towards ethnic minorities.
Apparently about five years ago it was 37% and is now 51% which is definitely out of proportion to the white majority in Britain.

At one time ethnic minorities were under-represented in adverts which was wrong.

However, in an effort to redress the balance yes, it is noticeable that the pendulum has swung the other way and the proportions do not represent the population of the UK as a whole.

What is noticeable is that older people and disabled people are under-represented.
Even in adverts aimed at them we see young, sprightly people leaping out of chairs aimed at those who might have difficulty getting up, or getting into those baths with doors designed for the less able!

I think you are right Babs.

I grew up in multi-cultural London and only live a short hop away now in a multi-cultural community which I like. I see skin colour, of course I do, just as I see what colour clothes people wear or what colour car they drive.

People are people with the same wants and needs regarding consumer products and services - which is what advertising is about.

I’m not going to be put off buying a product or service just because the actors in an advert have a variety of skin colours. I’m not going to switch off TV (which is what Pochin claims people do) because I see a family with a different skin colour eating a meal, shopping or having a party.

I have ITV burbling in the background while I get on with some work.

Latest adverts:

• JanePlan. White woman.
• Weetabix. White people.
• EE. White people.
• Kitchen Magic. White woman (Debbie McGee).
• CosyRoof. White men.
• Willowbrook Furniture. White man.
• Sharps Furniture. White woman
• Moneybox banking. White man
• Ojo Casino. White man.
• RNLI. White volunteer.

The brownest person on screen is David Dickinson!

Let's go back to what Pochin asked:

How many times do you look at a TV advert and think there’s not a single white person on it.

Er ... just the one today (advertising Sensodyne) out of a couple of dozen seen.

PaynesGrey,

You really wasting your time. Channel 4 has already commissioned a report and the report asserts that while black people account for around 4 per cent of the UK population they appear in more than 50 per cent of commercials.

Surveys suggest about 25% to 30% of UK citizens have racist attitudes.

Just over half of 18-24 year olds think there is a great deal of racism in the UK today - 32% of 65+ year olds think there is a great deal of racism.

www.statista.com/statistics/1123258/opinion-on-racism-in-uk-by-age/

I wonder which UK citizens they surveyed about racism. Were their skintones statistically representative?

No idea, but I've seen the results of a number of surveys over the years and they're all fairly consistent.

It doesn't surprise me at all that about 25-30% of people show through responses to various questions that they're racist. I've never actually counted, but I would think about that percentage of posts on social media is racist. I don't personally know many racists because I live in a "woke bubble" and actively try to avoid racists and bigots. hmm

Nigel Farage said on lunchtime news that her comments were ^wrong and ugly but not racist^

All hail the Oracle!! Hohoho!

Growstuff - My friend who I met for coffee is Nigerian and didn't think Pochin was being racist.

What a surprise!

How many people claim "I'm not racist, my best friend is black, but ..."

PS Kemi Badenoch is Nigerian and is racist.

But the over representation has only happened in the last 2 or 3 years.
It was so sudden, almost like a knee jerk reaction to something?

I think it was following the Black Lives Matter campaign after the death of George Floyd. The advertising companies wanted to show their support but ended up with disproportionate representation in their adverts

Ad agencies make their money by producing ads which sell products. If they don't succeed, nobody will commission them and they'll go bankrupt. Their priority is to their clients, not "wokies". Presumably the ads they're producing do result in increased sales. If consumers really objected to mixed race families in the ads, the agencies would soon find out from their many focus groups.

I am not a wokie though am not sure what on earth it is, and am saying it is racist.
And yes it is rude to call other members names.
We are not in the playground anymore.

Oreo and Aveline - Your posts are spot on. Pochin was merely stating a fact not being racists bit unfortunately I knew the wokies would jump on the observation and claim it was racist. It makes them feel morally superior and as my friend said only yesterday, "You can't argue with the morally superior, it's a waste of time and breath. They won't listen because they always know better."

How rude! Don't you think we're all too old on here to call each other childish names like "wokie"? You and your friend obviously like living in a bubble, where you're free to call others names and not be challenged. It sounds as though you two like being "better" than the "wokies".

I don't think I have either. I rarely watch TV "live". I tend to watch the programmes I like on catch up and don't have any ads.

I've been through advertising breaks and counted black or Asian faces in all of them. I counted 40 in total on one occasion. Why did I do it? Because I'm racist? No. It was because it was was so noticeable.
