Disgust - The Reform party Racist Sarah Pochlin
(329 Posts)www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cd7rg7wjvgvo
I'm sure we are all aware now that Reform MP Sarah Pochlin, made the following remarks on that Talk TV phone in.
Health Secretary Wes Streeting, quite rightly, imo, has criticised Reform MP Sarah Pochin (Runcorn and Helsby) for what he called "racist" language:
after she complained about adverts being "full of black people, full of Asian people
She gave a mealy mouthed apology "my remarks were "phrased poorly"
but maintained that many adverts were "unrepresentative of British society".
Streeting said yesterday Pochin had only said sorry "because she's been caught and called out".
its one of those "I'm sorry if" apologies that mean nothing - she is racist at heart.
The adverts we see on TV are all so very different - they are targeted, for example on ITV 3 we get a series of almost complete white older people in baths with doors, sitting in idealised arm chairs, etc etc.
On programmes watched by whole groups of people the content reflects our society as a whole. which is multi cultural:
and has the benefit, I believe for young people particularly, who don.t live in multi-cultural areas like mine, of showing that people from varied backgrounds do ordinary things like insure cars or watch TV or mix across cultures with popcorn and a take out (just to give some typical examples)
One has to ask, why does she mind so much?
What she said isn't even that insidious or subtle racism or the kind of racism people carry but aren't necessarily aware of
(ie assumptions being made becuase you dont actually know people from different backgrounds)
it was full out in your face "us and THEM" revealing her and her Reform compatriots in all their prejudice and hatred.
She should be taken to task by Farage. Is she isnt, what does that say about him?

Times change. My stepfather still says “the coloured chap up the road” as he still thinks it’s more polite than saying “the black man”. He thinks that would be offensive.
Well, just tell him. show him this page of pictures?

A reminder about Apartheid? Well within his life? - and how it used to be in the USA with the signs "whites `only" and "coloured" on toilets ..the sitting on buses at the back only.
Tell you what, watch the film "Green Book" it's very entertaining ..and informative.

I said we skip adverts or silence them!
They're just not clever or witty any more.
He’s 93 Wyllow and his brother 100.
They are educated and intelligent men. Kind and gentle.
Times change as I’ve said.
They are stuck in the past using what was once perfectly acceptable descriptions. Respectfully meant.

Growstuff - My friend who I met for coffee is Nigerian and didn't think Pochin was being racist.
What a surprise!
How many people claim "I'm not racist, my best friend is black, but ..."
PS Kemi Badenoch is Nigerian and is racist.
Diane Abbott is another racist.

Thats OK. different people are more or less politically aware. (ie, at the time of apartheid, they were a lot younger, but wouldn't necessarily know about what was happening in SA.
Its the intentions, at that age, that matter. They sound nice.
Yes, Diane Abbot made remarks about anti-semitism that were well out of order. No one is claiming that only white people are racist.
It's just when people deny they are when obviously they are, and think it doesn't matter. It does.
Had an uncomfortable incident at the gym today. A young women dressed in next to nothing was in the sauna moving in a very sexualised way - full of men eying her up in a nasty way - and when we both happened to be outside I said be careful.
She immediately shouted accused me of being racist because she turned out to be Muslim.
We made up in the changing rooms with warm smiles and words. I said I was worried for her like a daughter and had no idea she was Muslim.
She looked as if she her family was maybe from Italy or Greece. She just switched into realising I was old enough to be her grandma and had nothing but benign intentions. People being people.
People in ads are just people whatever colour they are. If she’d said “ it makes me mad to see so many people in ads” then that wouldn't be racist obvs. But to add “ black” is racist no?

No, just stating a fact.
No it wasn’t just stating a fact - she said “ it makes me mad to see…” which is stating she hates seeing black people mopping the floor or buying a sofa.
As far as I am concerned it has just shown the attitude of the majority of Nigel Farages party and never mind what they try to cover it with, they show themselves up for what they are. GOOD, she said what she really thought instead of covering it up with some flim flam , then hopefully no one will vote for her in the future. We can do without a devious group of people pretending to be what they are not, led by a man who spent time trying to get involved with Trump! Look who he wants to be with and it tells you the sort of person he is. He needs very few lessons on how to divide and upset as many people as possible instead of trying to make things equal for all.

Yes it was just stating a fact. Just read Littlejohn’s column in the DM. He puts his finger on reality as usual.
There is noproblem with skin colour, sexual preferences or anything else with the way others choose to live. I am just really cheesed off with having it all rammed down my throat all the time.
Yes there has been an increase in the number of ethnic minorities in ads, but the fact that it makes someone mad to see it is the racist bit. Ads are not real life - they are a fantasy, maybe it would be a better world with more mixed race people and no one cared about it. At the end of the day , advertisers wouldn’t be doing it unless they sold more stuff.
I’m not sure how seeing a mixed race couple shopping in a TV ad would make people mad or feel something( not sure what) is being shoved down their throat.
As someone said earlier - it started after Black Lives Matter, which is not really how it should be is it. It’s a political statement, it’s not come about organically. So it’s all a bit patronising really.
Advertisers do what sells - or at least what they think will sell. (They do get it very wrong sometimes).
I can remember when advertisers wouldn’t have people of colour in ads because they believed it would put people off buying the product. Now obviously they don’t believe that’s the case for the majority. That has to be a good thing.
So maybe the question that we ought to be asking is why are some groups still not represented. What makes those groups a non seller or a turn off. That would tell us where societies prejudices really lie.
And maybe our own as individuals.
Tbh I don't care if someone sits at home and gets annoyed with seeing the range of our multi cultural society being represented in adverts. However, people people who are elected into positions of responsibility and power are elected to represent all their voters, even the ones who didn't vote for them. That's why the comments made by Pochlin are dangerous and divisive and need to be "called out" for what they are. She may not have meant to make a racist comment but it's her position in society that makes it racist.

Do we have to have any prejudices? I dont feel
I have in any way but am made to feel that I have when I dont.
We all have prejudices, it is part of being human. I know mine and it has nothing to do with race.
If you are running a business and offering something that people might buy you would take their money regardless of your own prejudices. Money knows no colour and advertising is all about making money.
So it shouldn't matter one jot what kind of people are featured in the ads- but some people want to see the downfall of civilsation in the slightest thing...

People are being extremely naive about advertising here.
Forget the race thing for a minute, if you’re selling an anti wrinkle cream you’re not going to have a 70 year old man in your advert. You’re going to have a younger women.
Most adverts have young people in them no matter what’s being advertised ( unless of course you’re watching ITV3 with all the ‘pure cremations’ & stairlift adverts )
Adverts are aimed at people who will buy the product - so advertisers will have people in them who represent their target audience.
I have heard it said, mainly by the older generation. Most record programmes so they don’t have to watch the adverts.

What is the "it" you're tired of having rammed down your throat?
I was not impressed, or surprised when I read about Ms Pochlin’s comments. It was the negative, critical way she expressed outrage in believing non white individuals are over represented in advertising.
Marketing people research and aim at their target group. Plus it rather depends on where you live, or visit, whether you can say certain groups are over represented. She’s a classic Reform person,
Following the discussion about language changing, ( fgt and Wyllow). When I was 8 we lived in Padgate, then a small village near Warrington. So 1958 there was still a large US military base there, I was good friends with our neighbour, an 8 years old American daughter of an officer there. I was walking through the village with mum when I saw two black GIs, the first black people id seen outside photographs. Look mummy, black men. No said mum, say coloured its rude to call them black. Mum was a 1922 date of birth, so a little older but similar generation to FGTs relatives
Language does change and we have to recognise positive reasons for that
