I agree, the letting age, assuming she used one should have ensured everything was in place.
A drop in the ocean in the great schemes of things....but replicated by how many more

This deserves a thread of its own.
Funny how she and Angela Rayner both make these “minor mistakes”.

According to DM ( I know, I know) she admits she knew a licence was needed. She and Starmer will be glad of this furore regarding Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, no longer Prince of the realm.
We all know that ‘she knew’, the email exchange would point to that. However, the professional business with which it is obvious that her husband was dealing said it was going to arrange the licence. Why should she insult both her husband and the professionals by obsessively double checking everything they were doing? It is way beyond reasonable to argue that she should have been doing that. It’s so far beyond reasonable that it feels downright spiteful. Which, of course, it probably is… 🙄
I suggest a sense of proportion.
Did you see the news on Sudan tonight? Gaza? The vital debates to save out health services?
What a shockeroonie, self serving politicians who always seem to have terrible memories and forgotten emails/ letters. Well I never.
Looks like Reeves made a mistake and expected others to take necessary steps.
Mome cheated us all on a massive, massive scale and is rich beyond most people wildest dreams and shows absolute no contrition with what she did.
lets focus on the actual criminals, shall we
Lots of dead cat strategy going on these days.

And Mome has bought a multi million pound property even though she owes us taxpayers millions….but hey, let’s focus on Rachel Reeves shall we
…
Yes Mone is bad news, but Reeves is in charge now and going to be dealing with our finances.
So yes, let’s focus on Rachel Reeves.

It was a mistake. And yes she should have known more and been more thorough. But in the grand scheme of things it’s a minor transgression.
There is so much corruption in the world , do they really have to blow this up into a potential sacking offence? It’s ridiculous.
Just take a look at all the corruption that is going on in high places with millions being filched in dodgy deals by the already super rich. That’s where attention should be put.

The problem is, would he have, if it hadn’t arisen, and would it have been chased up if it hadn’t suddenly been exposed.
It would have been chased up by the local council if they had discovered it.
The local council has already said (according to the BBC) that if they discovered a property which should be licenced, but wasn't, they would notify the landlord and prosecute if the landlord failed to obtain a licence within 21 days of receipt of their notification,
It is clearly not a hanging offence in their view.
That makes me feel it happens quite frequently Maizie. That sounds more like system failure.

It’s not the problem though is it, because how could anybody possibly know the answer to a hypothetical question like that?

Storm in a teacup.
Yep. Boring.
Must be as its happened before.
But I bet, a lot of people would have not have reported it, or actively did corrupt deals or done private deals to either cover up or remedy it -
privately.

Sorry if this has already been posted but it probably needs repeating to outweigh the nastiness on here.
The estate agent used by Rachel Reeves's have apologised for an "oversight" after failing to apply for a licence.
Harvey and Wheeler offered to apply for the necessary rental licence on the chancellor's home - and then didn't.
It's from Sky.

Please give it a rest, Kemi.
There is a point where it rebounds on her and her party.
She thought she held a weapon, but it looks likely it could blow up in her own hands. We only need some "me too's" from members of the public who have been caught out in this way (except of course if they've done something illegal to solve their problem)
Oh what tangled webs get woven.

Rachel Reeves seems to be very forgetful...She forgot to disclose that a benefactor had paid for her clothes; she forgot to disclose the free tickets for various venues and now this! Very worrying that she's "in charge" of the country's finances!
I am assuming you didn’t Google the facts before you posted. The facts are clothing was bought from a cash gift from a benefactor, Juliet Rosenfeld and the gift was declared. Everything was in accordance with the rules so there was no lapse of memory. She didn’t declare concert tickets given her but referred herself to the parliamentary standards committee over this.
The Renters' Rights Act 2025 makes provision for licencing all English landlords but the fine detail has yet to be announced. When all landlords have to be licenced there will be less room for error as every lease/advert etc should have the licence number on it.
Please give it a rest, Kemi.
Probably its a better onward path, to look at much clearer guidelines "who is responsible for what" overall?
So we don't get the situation of x saying y is responsible, and vice versa and an unholy mess
It has to be happening to others just not made public as the people concerned are not in the public eye.
Excuses, excuses, excuses.
Many of us have not held down high-powered jobs, which may well be because we know our limitations.
We also lack the support staff, the team of advisors and the extra money to pay for what we need. Rachel Reeves and Nicholas Joisey would have made a good profit out of letting their house; I don't know if they have to pay for their accommodation at Number 11 or 10, or if that is a perk of the job, like the ministerial car.
I don't suppose the tenants of their property are thrilled with all the attention focused on them, and I wonder if they will expect the rent they have paid returned?
Finally, I would imagine the first person prosecuted for not obtaining a letting licence will cite Rachel Reeves' pardon
They are scrambling to cover their back, their livelihoods are at risk for the inadequacies?
Hang on.
Why have the names f the agents and the client been redacted in the email. Conveniently it also just says ‘Hi”.
I mean we all know who the agents were and who the client was.
Don’t we?????
