This deserves a thread of its own.

Funny how she and Angela Rayner both make these “minor mistakes”.

Sago Wed 29-Oct-25 21:14:31

I can’t believe that I’m going to defend the woman but to be fair the letting agent should have informed her.

Also they she should have made sure the license was in place before the rental agreement was signed.

Maremia Wed 29-Oct-25 21:42:18

But it was okay for Farage to lie about buying that house in Clacton?

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Wed 29-Oct-25 21:44:00

Storm in a teacup.

Smileless2012 Wed 29-Oct-25 22:16:45

Just started a thread about this, I'll ask GN to delete it.

The landlord or letting agent is responsible for obtaining a licence but it's the landlord's responsibility to ensure the property meets the requirements, in order for a licence to be issued.

Smileless2012 Wed 29-Oct-25 22:21:07

She didn't have an HMO Licence which is her responsibility to obtain, not the letting agents.

25Avalon Wed 29-Oct-25 22:32:24

Does this mean landlords will be ok in the budget?

Allira Wed 29-Oct-25 22:40:17

Oh dear.

I do hope it's not a long-term let. She may be needing it back before long.

Grannybags Wed 29-Oct-25 22:51:13

Allira 🤣🤣🤣

I thought it was 'ignorance is no defence under the law"? If that goes for the ordinary man/woman why would it be different for an MP? I'm not suggesting she should be hung drawn and quartered or even sacked, but why should she get more sympathy or leeway than Joe Bloggs who was similarly ignorant?

windmill1 Thu 30-Oct-25 06:06:35

Yes, she's openly admitted her, ahem, 'mistake' and once again our weak and weary Prime Minister has given her a free pass.

Ye Gods!

Well, allow moi to suggest she should be hung, drawn and quartered plus get the sack.

Thank you.

Im guessing she doesn't do all the family life admin herself. She has a husband. Let’s criticise him.

Allsorts Thu 30-Oct-25 06:41:07

Why make excuses for her, for anyone that lies or withholds the truth. All these supposed oversights whatever party, always to theur financial advantage.
Maremia, where did anyone say it was ok for Farage to buy a house in Clacton! No one did. Why say that ?
If anyone is letting out they have a legal obligation to check the agreements, you buy a house anything you adhere to the rules. If one of us did it the law would be involved, doubt we would be told, there there, you didn't know.
Keir keeps her as there's no one else, useless lot.

Whether it is his her husband’s mistake , hers or the letting agents, it happened.

As someone pointed out upthread ignorance is no defence under the law

An apology wouldn’t wash for Jo Bloggs.

I am as unimpressed by RR as Chancellor as everyone else is, but I admit to some sympathy with her over this. The requirements vary not only from council to council, but in the case of my council from ward to ward, and without any apparent logic. No excuse for her letting agent, though.

David49 Thu 30-Oct-25 07:34:57

As a general rule you don’t need a licence to Rent out a property, unless it is multiple occupancy, but some councils have decided to introduce controls.
Due diligence that professional agents follow should have ensured a licence was obtained, they certainly would have with energy certificates and boiler and electrical safety, a property owner is very unlikely to know every regulation - which us why we use professionals.

Oreo Thu 30-Oct-25 08:03:47

I wouldn’t jump on her for this at all….the coming budget is another thing tho🤔

Absolutely spot on post.

Surely anyone with a modicum of common sense does their own research into any transactions they are about to make.
Reeves, like Rayner, is pleading ignorance and blaming others for what has happened. Good for the Daily Mail, Gransnet's favourite newspaper, in calling her out.
She should be shown the door but Keir is busy getting ready for his 40th trip out of the country as as Allsorts says, who else is there? What a self serving bunch of clowns.

Maremia Thu 30-Oct-25 08:34:43

But he didn't buy that house, did he? He lied about buying it. Twice, at least. And now his girlfriend, who 'had enough cash to buy it' is being investigated for fraud.
Reeves may have made a mistake, but his was a deliberate lie to the public.
Why do I bring him up on this Thread? Because if Reform voters (who claimed to be such on another Thread) wish to have a go at Labour, I wish to give perspective to the discussion.
Isn't that the point of GN? A balanced discussion.

Of course there's always the chance that this has been leaked by someone in the LP in an effort to get rid of her. Pile on the pressure enough like they did with Rayner. We all know Starmer will eventually cave in and her "resignation" will appear. Let's hope so.

Quite. We rent out a small house (nowhere near the very expensive house RR rents out).

We have to make sure we comply with the law and all regulations relating to our property. I will admit you have to be on your toes because things change all the time but she is supposed to be very smart isn’t she? I find my info on local council and various landlord support sites.

fancythat Thu 30-Oct-25 08:52:44

I started off thinking it wasnt a big deal.

But now do think she should have been a lot more careful.

No surprise Sir Kier standing by her.
Always does. Until he cant.

DaisyAnneReturns Thu 30-Oct-25 09:01:35

Apparently, the letting agents had a line in there paperwork which said "if you need a licence, we will advise you".
