Surprised that no-one has voiced an opinion on this undercover BBC report, maybe everyone is speechless at yet another government failure.

It’s always a bit silent on the N&P board if it’s anything to do with illegal immigrants doing naughty things.

growstuff Thu 06-Nov-25 15:35:03

Ahem! I wrote a few weeks ago (on one of the numerous threads about immigrants) that one way of reducing the number of illegal immigrants would be to invest more in enforcement of businesses selling products such as vapes, phones, nail extensions etc. I'm not surprised the BBC could catch a few people out. Law enforcement agencies would if they had the resources. They've had their funding cut for over a decade.

What's coaband? If you mean contraband I'm sure it isn't just Kurdish people involved. A crime is a crime...

What an idiotic comment.
The gang will be along shortly.

Indeed they will Stripey Gran.
Having a go at Kurdish immigrants this time.
And before everybody weighs in one simple fact is that a great many brave Kurdish people fought to defeat ISIS alongside US and British soldiers, losing their lives in the process. They are our allies. So perhaps we should remember them thus November 11th as well.
And not tar all people with the same brush.

There are good and bad in every group of people the world over. Call a criminal a criminal, no need to mention the nationality.

RosieandherMaw Thu 06-Nov-25 19:39:26

Coaband ????

That made me smile.

Yes, contraband.
When shops are raided they often turn out to be manned by illegal immigrants.

Liloldlady
There is one such shop next door to the charity shop where I volunteer. We knew something was amiss when they set up shop about 18 months ago and out of 3 men setting up the shop only one had very limited English.
Then when we saw all the goodies going in we did knew what was going on.

Babs03
I can assure you that the 3 Turkish barbers very close to the charity shop mentioned above are all Kurds. That’s because one of our young volunteers dates one of them.

Liloldlady
When you see this going on all around you all the time you’re not surprised.
I know that a local shopkeeper has spoken to the police. Have we seen any, what do you think?

Casdon Thu 06-Nov-25 20:13:37

Ignoring the snippy comments, I don’t think there is anybody on Gransnet who would have any issue with illegal businesses being exposed and illegal workers being discovered. I’d say well done to the BBC for exposing this network. The owner was right when he said that Trading Standards/Immigration etc. would likely not find them, as the services run on a shoestring, and have multiple responsibilities, but they will of course act on tip offs as well as on their own investigation work.

Liloldlady Thu 06-Nov-25 20:26:21

Thanks to those of you who pointed out my error (coaband instead of contraband). Stupid liloldlady!

No I have no problem, I don't like anyone abusing our society. I am really cross with people who abuse our disability system too because it makes it more difficult for the genuine needy. I just feel compelled to try to protect the people who get swept up in the mass blame and who are innocent, and we've seen plenty of that here and in the wider world.

petra in our High Road, we now have 5 Turkish/Kurdish Barbers, 3 Vietnamese Nail Shops an interesting Turkish grocers and a rather dodgy Asian mini-mart.

The nail shops are busy, and have been raided on more than one occasion. The mini-mart has only been here a couple of months, always empty.

The Barbers are all marble and glitzy, look luxurious but rarely see anyone in them…

keepingquiet Fri 07-Nov-25 09:29:23

Maybe if people weren't buying everything from Amazon et al and at the big out of town malls the shops would still be open on our High Streets instead of being used for criminal activities...?

Maremia Fri 07-Nov-25 10:43:31

Nailed it keepingquiet.

Maremia Fri 07-Nov-25 10:45:16

Just as a Point of Information, who was buying the contraband?
Who was letting out the premises?

silverlining48 Fri 07-Nov-25 10:57:17

I find the title of this thread unpleasant, calling people from elsewhere ‘ illegals’ demeans both the individuals referred to and even worse, the person who thinks it ok to use that expression.

BlueBelle Fri 07-Nov-25 11:21:21

Hooray for a sensible reply Babs07
The Kurds and many other ethnic minorities have often helped us fought alongside us and as a whole group deserve our respect
I HATE all this division in headlines and this is equally nasty
Someone up thread ask who buys the contraband well homegrown WHITE English of course but that’s ok isn’t it ?

Why can’t we accept people as we find them without piling everyone into a big old bundle

Maremia Fri 07-Nov-25 11:25:53

Again, is this another example of how our regulation and inspection services have endured 13/14 years of Tory cutbacks?

I find the title of this thread unpleasant, calling people from elsewhere ‘ illegals’ demeans both the individuals referred to and even worse, the person who thinks it ok to use that expression.

But it is true. Illegals are illegals.

And I personally find it more than odd that those pictured holding signs saying "WELCOME" are not rushing to offer the illegals (there, I've said it again) a safe space in their own homes.

I remenmber celebrity Lily Allen making a fool of herself by going to the Calais migrant camp and getting down on her knees and publicly "apologising on behalf on the British people."

So how many illegals did Ms Allen take in?

Oreo Fri 07-Nov-25 11:47:24

Lily Allen has ‘problems’ which include stunts to get her noticed.

Oreo Fri 07-Nov-25 11:48:31

So many Turkish barbers, nail salons and so on are money laundering outlets, they don’t care about having any customers.

silverlining48 Fri 07-Nov-25 12:06:18

Calling people illegals denies their humanity, as well as the humanity of those that use the term.
As for taking immigrants in, our family have taken in 8, from Syria, Nigeria/ Ukraine and Afghanistan. They are all working now and contributing to the country where they now live in.
