Is it time to drop Eurovision?

With the latest, four countries will withdraw if Israel is allowed to compete and the ongoing joke about voting having nothing to do with supporting countries for political reasons, is it time to drop it?

Even if we don’t have a song likely to win, we still get to pay out, because
the "Big Five" countries (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK) pay the highest fees and automatically qualify for the grand final.

Apparently Donald Trump has banned 19 countries from the world cup in USA, does that mean Football will be gone too (please!)

Yes! Yes! Yes! Terrible format and why include Australia?
I am with Spain on this one

A load of pointless rubbish! Awful Europop! No idea what all the hype is about ? I know no one that watches it.....

Geordiegirl1 Sun 07-Dec-25 16:35:10

I am in 100% agreement with our Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.

I stopped watching it when it became political and countries voted in blocs. Israel being in it is the final straw, bin the whole thing now.

If only, my least favourite sport. Corrupt to the core.

That 'political' voting became very pronounced after BREXIT.

Countries are eligible to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest if their public service broadcaster belongs to the European Broadcasting Union. Each public service broadcaster pays for the participation of their country so the licence fee covers the UK. If the licence fee was scrapped it seems likely that a large number of British people would pay to watch Eurovision.

Yes

Lots of comments missing the point, as often the case. The show is massively popular (no, I don't know why!) and a chunky subset dress up for it, and have a party, etc.

Those devotees don't really care WHO is in it, there could be an entry from Alpha Centauri for all they care, it's the event they like.

If YOU don't like it, well, tough. You may not like Match of the Day, Book at Bedtime, The Archers, Strictly & Politics Today either (etc etc), but plenty do, and the viewing world doesn't revolve around you.

Did the Israeli Govt go too far in battering Gaza to look like the results of a WW2 firebombing raid on Dresden (etc)? Yes, it did, but there is no point in folk here wailing and gnashing their teeth. WE didn't have almost 2,000 innocent men, women and children butchered to death by a terrorist offshoot of the fascist Iranian regime -- if we had, some folk here would doubtless think rather differently?

Who has been wailing and gnashing their teeth? Must have missed that.

It sounds Biblical!! Or from the Beano! grin

Mollygo Sun 07-Dec-25 20:01:28

No it’s not missing the point, unless we aren’t allowed to express an opinion on here.
Of course we can turn it off, or even not have a TV, but that shouldn’t stop us giving reasons why we think it should be scrapped e.g. political voting, unmemorable songs.
So far, unless I’ve missed something, the only argument for keeping it is, lots of people enjoy it.
Nothing wrong with expressing that opinion either.

It’s meant to be a bit of fun and froth. But everyone keeps politising it, which is sad. I remember voting via postcards back in the 60s for which song should represent UK. Sandie Shaw! Lulu!
Sadly, they could now bring back the Beatles from the dead and we still wouldn’t win. As for Israel, feel sorry for any artist standing up to the maelstrom.

madeleine45 Sun 07-Dec-25 21:42:35

I can't see why Israel is in it anyway, but am not interested in it anyway. I watched it years ago, and remember Sandie Shaw with bare feet and Bucks Fizz

knspol Sun 07-Dec-25 21:47:13

I don't think I've ever actually watched it so don't care one way or the other although does seem a lot of people really enjoy the programme.

Dianehillbilly1957 Sun 07-Dec-25 21:56:29

Time for it to go, it's had its day when we were happy with simple things in life and entertainment was different, but I'm afraid it's done now. It's not even Eurovision it's worldwide, and a political stage!

charley68 Sun 07-Dec-25 22:07:52

The antisemitism is awful. Israel was invaded by Hamas. I shall never forget the videos on TV of Hamas dragging those young Jewish women covered in blood around the streets. Israeli government is responsible, as are Hamas for the continuation of the conflict. Israel has a right to defend itself.

Ireland has become, or has always been, Hamas/Palestine supporters, are antisemitic, and I am utterly ashamed to call myself Irish. I think Spain is similar, I am not sure of the other countries.

We used to have Eurovision parties and made fun of the entries.
They were usually awful .
I haven't watched it for about 15 years .

David49 Mon 08-Dec-25 07:09:58

I stopped watching it probably 20 yrs ago it’s far too political and pointless, most of the songs are not relevant to an international audience.
