Trump’s visa plans

Just when you think Trump couldn’t get any crazier, he has launched his new visa plans for most countries including the UK.

Although, it would obviously be good to screen for potential terrorists, I think the measures will put off a good number from visiting the US. The new visa will require 5 years of social media history, addresses and emails for five years and possibly the same for family members.
Visits to National Parks now cost £100 dollars tax including entrance fees. To cap it all, he is to abolish free entry on Martin Luther King Day although it will be free to enter on his birthday!

I would recommend the Rest is Politics podcast with Alistair Campbell and Rory Stewart. They know their stuff and at the moment are very concerned about trump.

I've enjoyed various work and holiday visits to the USA including NY and the Met Opera but I'm certainly not going to waste my time filling in any kind of personal history stuff on a visa exemption form. There are lots of other more welcoming destinations to visit. I hope the EU doesn't go down the same rabbit hole. Starmer needs to tell the Americans this intrusive firm filling is unacceptable to UK citizens,

AmberGran Thu 11-Dec-25 16:53:07

I spent three years living in the US and was very happy there. Still have lots of friends there. And despite many weeks spent in New York I never saw anyone with a gun other than police 😁

My last passport was issued in Washington and contains retinal scans that were taken when I arrived - I was always quite sad that they were never used anywhere afterwards 😁

If I was emigrating there I might agree to have my social media history investigated, but for a few weeks to visit? I don't think so.

Yes, leeds22, the thought of Vance as president frightens me too. The election can’t come soon enough for me.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 11-Dec-25 16:39:50

One set of co-grandparents spend two months in the spring and two months in the autumn at their house in Florida.

Our AS, DiL and GC have flights booked for Easter, hopefully they will be able to get ESTA’s without too much trouble.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 11-Dec-25 16:36:33

Trump seems to be into zones of influence - so he has the Americas . Russia has Europe and China the far east.

leeds22 Thu 11-Dec-25 16:33:17

I've never really wanted to visit the US and probably will never get there now - medical insurance would probably be too expensive, apart from the orange one and his mad ideas.

Some on this thread seem to be suggesting he is unwell and may not be here much longer, just remember the Vance is the V-P and possibly a worse prospect than Trump.

No one should visit the USA to study, to gamble, to ski, to cruise, to visit Dysney, for a sporting event, for business or a holiday. It is not safe. They dont want us, they dont like us. “We dont want them” trump the wannabe dictator said. Please do not support the economy of a rogue state. Europe and others have lost trust in the USA. America is no longer a friend and ally of Canada, Britain and the EU. In fact Trump is unreliable, impotent and his chaotic foreign policy is making the world a more unstable and dangerous place.

Trump is under the thumb of both Russia and Israel and has given them a free pass to do anything they want, making the USA look weak, not strong.
Now with masked thugs (ICE) jumping on “foreign looking” people it just got much worse.

Susieq62 Thu 11-Dec-25 16:25:30

I refused to visit USA when Bush was president. I have no intention of going now whilst the “Orange one” is in power. He is a tyrant, deranged and a bully. It is a beautiful country scenery wise but there are better places to visit. I wouldn’t be allowed in anyway given my views expressed on social media outlets !

Mojack26 Thu 11-Dec-25 16:22:56

He's just a dangerous, deranged crazy man, same as his madman pal Putin! That's what's scary... No wonder Melania stays in New York only there when she needs to be..... She will be honouring her pre nup till his term is over and the she's out of there!

It strikes me as rather odd that you all seem to assume that people actually still WANT to visit the US.

Why would anyone who did not actually need to go there to do business be willing to visit such a rotten place as Trump had succeeded in turning his country into?

Jane43 Thu 11-Dec-25 15:54:27

We used to love our trips to the USA, we would plan road trips and end up in Canada to visit family. Thank goodness we did it when the pound was strong against the dollar at over two dollars to the pound, food, accommodation and gas was cheap and it was before Trump. It seems to me he is becoming more and more of a megalomaniac and his administration is indulging his every whim.

Maremia Thu 11-Dec-25 15:45:01

'Bats for American citizens', does he now? Removing Medicare, is good for the ordinary folk?
Lots of evidence that he grafts for his own Family.
Apparently his approval ratings are going down.

pluckyluckyme Thu 11-Dec-25 15:14:52

Well, that will only harm the tourism industry as I imagine majority of people , myself included, will not be divulging such information. What happens to that information afterwards ? Will it be erased or stored - I know what I think! And what about people who do not bother with social media? Such an infringement on civil liberty. I really hope that this dangerous toddler will be forced into permanent retirement soon, very soon for the sake of the world.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 11-Dec-25 14:33:29

My only assessment is that we can no longer count on the USA

Everything else is a stated intention by Trump.

I think it is terribly worrying.

I have been reading and listening to the the USA National Security Strategy.

So Trump says he does not worry about Russia, China North Korea Africa or Middle East.

But

He hates Europe. Which he says is going down the pan.

He intends to fully interfere in European elections to get the far right into government so expect support for parties like the AFD and Reform.

We no longer have an ally in USA in any way.

I believe your assessment is correct.
And we are in Europe are in trouble because te USA controls the internet and parts of our defences.
Typical of him, he saw that weakness and for no reason, other than he could, decided to exploit it.
Trump and Putin are brothers.

Jockytaff Thu 11-Dec-25 14:02:43

Re Nandalot - Trump should be less concerned about visitors to the USA as the place is full of lunatics already.

Republican cities have homeless people too. hmm And actually. So many people have lost jobs because of DJTs policies that the foreclosure rate is skyrocketing. So the problem is getting worse under Trump not better.

It is about to get worse because of DJT. His policies are stripping us from our healthcare, jobs and future.

The first $13,000 of my medical bills are now out of pocket with my insurance. Starting on 2026. Thanks DJT!

But hey, he is just a great man who loves America, right? So our suffering is fine. hmm

mokryna Thu 11-Dec-25 08:55:21

I cannot speak about the homeless today but when I visited California in the early 2000s, an aid worker told me that many people were homeless because they had had to sell their property to pay for healthcare. This was of course before Obama presidency.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 11-Dec-25 08:41:54

Well we will have to produce 5 years worth of media activity. I reckon the only one who will be allowed in on GN is FGT😄😄😄

Oreo Thu 11-Dec-25 08:27:18

Elegran

He may not be there much longer to enforce it. More and more peopl are resisting his pressure on them to make his puerile narcissistic wishes into court decisions, departmental policies, and international acts of aggression.

Plus he is clearly unwell.

I agree.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 11-Dec-25 08:24:32

Sandrina

This has been his playbook, drama and provocation, keeping his fan base cheering. Yes I agree he's clearly unwell but what does it say about his supporters.

That we admire the way he goes in to bat for American citizens? Putting America first. Not getting taken for a patsy. Trump has forced Europe to step up regarding defence, NATO contribution etc. I think Trump was sick of America being shafted.
