Yes of course you are. MaizieD. Didn’t quite mean to imply that … but feel strongly this is not our fight.

The @not our fight@ thing.
Another poster said much the same thing upthread.

I always struggle to know what is and what isnt.

Why for instance would this not be, but Ukraine is?

And why not other places too??

David49 Mon 05-Jan-26 08:31:02

The whole tariff issue is about bringing manufacturing and jobs back into the US, more jobs mean more taxes are paid more manufacturing means more companies are paying taxes.

More taxes means public services and benefits can be paid, where else can it come from.?

Here's a wee twist, yes, from Facebook. But keep an eye out in case it comes up from a more reliable source.
The whole thing was a pre-arranged set up.
Look how easily it was executed
Did the Russians know in advance, and that's why they evacuated their people 14 days ago?

I saw or heard something along the same lines[not F acebook].

foxie48 Mon 05-Jan-26 08:19:48

Two different things*Ronib " don't confuse or conflate them.

Wyllow3 Mon 05-Jan-26 08:15:46

I think there is possible confusion here around "fight".

We haven't been using it literally, ie "boots on the ground" (and may it never have to be so 🙏)

An American and Iran conflict is so huge could affect the balances of power in many areas of the world, where it is of great diplomatic concern to our interests as well as possible provocation to armed conflicts that become our concern and ultimately, our fight.

But this is what Trump does. He disrupts, or threatens to disrupt.
It's his modus operandi, shown so colourfully last year in his tariff wars. Get everyone running around in a panic trying to appease, but end up not doing very much,

But meanwhile he is deliberately attempting to change the way countries relate to each other via International War and conventions, to try and benefit the USA

Except as Imaround and others point out, on the ground for huge groups of people in the USA it is not benefitting them at all, only the rich and powerful or key MAGA groups.

ronib Mon 05-Jan-26 08:04:20

Iran is likely to kick off in the near future. Or rather America and Iran.
Is that our fight too?

Chocolatelovinggran Mon 05-Jan-26 08:03:46

Spot on Ashcombe!
Mr Trump has stated that the new regime will do as they are told .
I believe the quote was " She was very gracious, but she has no choice".
Nothing to do with oil, of course, just drugs.....of course, pardoning the convicted drug trafficking leader if Honduras was about, um, er,... something else?

When it is Denmark he is after, I doubt people will be so blasé.

While we have been concentrating on Venezuela there are major US movement of troops and equipment into Europe, dozens of flights into Fairford and Mildenhall, it probably is exercises.
On the other hand taking over Denmark or even kidnaping Putin might be the aim

foxie48 Mon 05-Jan-26 07:40:50

" Not our fight "
Standing in solidarity with countries who recognise the importance of adherence to International law is always our "fight" It's what helps to keep us and our fellow humans in other countries and continents safe. It's not perfect, it doesn't always work but once countries look the other way and say it's nothing to do with us, there will be more people put at risk of oppression and mistreatment and one day that will be us.

Wyllow3 Sun 04-Jan-26 23:15:34

Oh Ronib, that is what people have thought of previous dictators - "well, it doesnt concern us" when that dictator invades a nearby country - then its "just another", and it still "doesnt concern us" - until one day it does. Trump is a madman, and his appointees arrogant.

They are now threatening Greenland again. Denmarks PM was driven to comment ..and given that Denmark is a member of NATO - it is of concern.

"Her remarks come after Katie Miller - the wife of one of Trump's aides, Stephen Miller - *tweeted a map of Greenland in the colours of the American flag alongside the word "SOON"

"The Trump administration's recent move to appoint a special envoy to Greenland prompted anger in Denmark"

Maduro was just one part of an extremely corrupt regime, there are all the rest of them in office who can continue his 'work'. I'm sure that they are not best pleased at having their figurehead abducted.

Will they submit easily to Trump's wishes or will they resist and make him put military boots on the ground?

No sovereign country should submit easily to the demands of a

And do we care? MaizieD Trump’s war, not ours.

Well, I feel very sorry for the Venezuelans who have endured so much cruelty, corruption and poverty over the years. thanks, in part to the USA. They'd be caught in the middle of whatever horrors a resistance would provoke.

Am I not allowed to be concerned about people from other countries?

The operatives who captured him have been in Caracas for 3 months.

Maremia Sun 04-Jan-26 21:36:22

Maduro's allies are still in charge in Venezuela. They denounce the killing of innocent civilians by the US.
The way the US carried out this attack is illegal under international law.
Trump gets more dangerous every day.

I still don't know enough about this to hold an informed discussion. Honestly, I was painting my bathroom yesterday.

I am concerned that he did this without Congress, which is unconstitutional in the US.

I am concerned that Trump broke International law.

And I am concerned that yesterday Trump mentioned Mexico, Columbia and now this post about Greenland.

I do wonder how many countries he has to invade before the rest of the world starts getting worried. Not to say they aren't to be honest, but I think there will come a time, soon, when the rest of the world will have to do something against the US. And we will deserve it as a country, even though so many of us don't support it.

I get all the diplomacy and why everyone has to tread lightly. My post is just about how I feel. I will rationalize it all later. wink

I think that countries should all be very concerned now. He’s not going to stop. He’s been quiet on Canada, but it’s still in his plans

For anyone questioning the legality of attacking Venezuela and abducting their leader:

Remember we're talking about a highly corrupt leader, a known criminal who used his high office to make billions for himself, and has manipulated elections to stay in power, has used his military against his own citizens, has protected his corrupt friends and punished his political enemies.

And the President of Venezuela did
some bad things too.

👏👏👏
