Wow, just Wow. This man is a true leader and his speech was riveting. I strongly recommend watching it as he explained simply and powerfully how the world has changed and what we need to do to change without subordinating ourselves to more powerful countries. Impressive and charismatic, thankfully we have a grown up in the room.

Trumps speech lasted, I believe, two hours and must have seemed like two days; I’ve only heard the ‘highlights’ on the news and that was enough for me. Whereas listening to Carney’s speech in full, when I got to the end of it my first thought was how the hell did he pack so much into it in 16 (?) minutes ( and that was with part of it being in French which I didn’t understand).

I watched most of Trump's speech live until I got to a point that I just had to turn him off. If he was anyone other than Potus no-one would listen to more than five minutes of what he has to say as his limited vocabulary and self agrandisement would be too sickening.

A result for Canada

I think he would have declined the invitation anyway, tbh I can't see any responsible world leader sitting with the people who were at the signing. Actually it would have been a coup for Trump to get Carney on it, not the other way round.

Brilliant speech.

For me this was a speech with a ray of hope for the middle countries as he said! It is inspirational and we discussed it at length last night in a mixed room and all were hopeful! There has to be a way to prevent Trump et al bullying the rest of us! Carney had the room didn’t he?
I doubt that Trump understood very much of it but if you heard his own direct at Davos, it was embarrassing 🤷‍♀️

Remember, Mr Carney was our very own Governor of the Bank of England for seven years!

And he advised us not to leave the EU.

As I said on the other thread, this is what some people have been saying for years but were dismissed as populists, etc. Paul Embreys response to Carneys speech is interesting I think.

Prime Minister Mark Carney is brilliant.

Ignorance, bullying, vulgar, and a mentally re-ranged pedaphile, cruel sadist and hauntingly disgusting individual.

Trump could not walk in the corner in Carney´s shoes !!!

Maremia Fri 23-Jan-26 16:27:04

Frenchgalinspain, Trump couldn't even walk properly on the red carpet, when he came off the plane for the summit.

Foxie48 Well said totally agree, great speech.

May I ask a genuine question?
Populist politicians such as Victor Orban, Marine Le Pen, Trump and Farage promote racism.
Do you believe that the same is true of Carney?
Am I conflating different concepts?

Promote racism? You mean wanting their country to remain for their own is racist? I’ll bet you backed apartheid didn’t you. It’s all brilliant to have a country where it looks after its own people, that is unless it’s a white country. Italys Meloni is a highly intelligent articulate woman. I only wish we had someone as strong as her.

I think you are confused, Menopausebitch. Apartheid is racism and I doubt that Maremia supported it...

foxie48 Mon 26-Jan-26 12:04:40

If you want to know if a political organisation is racist don't judge it by what the leader says publicly, judge it by who supports that leader. Orban, Le Penne, Meloni and Trump all have significant support from and include such people in positions of authority and power, with known racist views. As indeed does Farage. The question you need to ask is why do these people who are holocaust deniers, Nazi sympathisers, giver of fascist salutes and openly hate followers of Islam etc etc give their support to these people? All of this is well documented.
Carney is not a populist. He is leader of the Liberal party in Canada and as such is now the PM. He is popular with voters and is bringing Canadians together in face of the threats from the US but that does not make him a populist.

Yes, I’m still going around with stars in my eyes.

galaxy I don’t remember people’s admiration of Carney - anti-brexiter etc- as being populist.

Quite the opposite. Carney is not about divide and rule, but United we are strong.

Look at the way he has handled Canada and Trump.

I agree and have huge respect for Carney and he genuinely appears to care about his own country and others.

whoops sent too soon without reading through as dog was sick on the floor!

Basically IMO if an organisation attracts racists and puts them in positions of power, it sends a very strong message about what sort of organisation it is despite what it's leader tries to project!

Thanks Maizie and foxie.
