Friend of Martin Luther King - he was there when King died.

US reporting. -this is 9 minutes long, but for those not familiar with the struggle for Civil rights, not just for black people, this gives a good picture

May the people fighting Trump's excesses take courage from those who fought in the civil Rights movement in the 1960's.

Most of us here are old enough to remember those days, but I'll finish by posting the key speech by Martin Luther King that marks the best of hope in ordinary peoples activism against oppression.

"I have a dream"

A giant of his time, civil rights activist and a man with a constant conscience.
Thanks for the links Wyllow3
Another light has gone off in the world.
Thoughts are with his family and friends.

RIP. I feel so sad for him that he didn’t live to see the current challenges to civil liberties in the USA overcome.

Trump jumped on the bandwagon this morning by praising "fine man" etc.

I keenly await the appropriate praise for those in Minneapolis?

Meanwhile demonstrations continue against Trump, we dont get to hear about them - but just today, reported in the Independent

Flashmob protesters block New York’s 5th Avenue in front of Trump Tower on Presidents Day

The profanity-packed action was one of numerous demonstrations held across the country, from New England to California’s Coachella Valley

A man of dignity and stature, indeed. I mourn his passing.
I was aware of these demonstrations, Wyllow, but I do wonder how many US citizens are?
I understand, for example, that we in Britain knew of Mr Vance being booed at the Winter Olympics, but in the States, this was edited out in news channels.

Well I just googled "Fox News anti Trump demonstrations" (as in the last 2 days).

Zilch

I think that answers your question: Activists on SM will know, I didn't check out other news channels.

So sad a thread which I assumed was respect for Rev. Jackson is
another Trump thread

RIP Rev Jackson

A truly wonderful man RIP

Wyllow3 Tue 17-Feb-26 17:20:54

I welcome your reminder, Annie: yes, this is a thread for the Rev Jesse Jackson, who was a fighter against oppression.

But other significant people and events may be alluded to now and then, because we have a new wave of oppressions needing women ands men with his courage. I don't think we can separate the man from his politics.

I remember him when l was a teenager in the Sixties. He seemed like a good man and worked tirelessly for the Black US Civil Rights Movement.

Rev Jesse Jackson. A truly genuine shining light with a massive presence.

I think our Politicians could learn a lot from him about what integrity really is.

Than you Mr Jackson
