This couple set of on a round the world motorcycle trip and ignored FO advice to avoid Iran.

They now face 10 year jail sentences for spying and espionage.

Were they arrogant, naive or possibly guilty?

Tuliptree Thu 19-Feb-26 09:29:17

Just really really stupid

Luckygirl3 Thu 19-Feb-26 09:31:08

Stupid indeed - what can they have been thinking?

Tuliptree Thu 19-Feb-26 10:33:48

Well i doubt they were thinking. And now the FO has to waste precious resources on them.

Cossy Thu 19-Feb-26 10:38:02

Arrogant and very very foolish! Never ever ignore FO advice, they’ll be lucky if they get even the slightest help for being stupid enough to ignore the advice.

AGAA4 Thu 19-Feb-26 10:45:19

I agree with all the above posters. They ignored advice and will now be wanting help to get out of a ten year prison sentence.
Who would want to go to Iran?

rafichagran Thu 19-Feb-26 10:46:17

Arrogant and very stupid. They only had to see what happened to Nazanin Zingari Ratcliffe.

Despite their bad judgement, I hope they don't serve the maximum sentance, it would be hell. Not to mention the legal costs to try and free them.

Sarnia Thu 19-Feb-26 10:46:35

I can never fathom out why people ask for advice then ignore it, especially for something as important as their safety when travelling. I think my children would be very annoyed with me if I had done this.

Chocolatelovinggran Thu 19-Feb-26 10:52:24

Sadly, this was an entirely predictable outcome. Understandably, their son is asking for help from the Foreign Office for help, and, of course, I would hope for a better outcome for this couple.
However, I do feel that the Foreign Office will be spending time, resources, and endless diplomacy in resolving a matter that should never have happened.

Blinko Sat 21-Feb-26 13:43:57

Clearly politically naive and must never have heard of Nazanin Zaghari Radcliffe....FGS!

Harris27 Sat 21-Feb-26 13:46:36

Well how stupid were they knowing the dangers.

keepingquiet Sat 21-Feb-26 13:51:03

I think it was a massive ego trip from what I know. They were hoping to spread some kind of message to the world but were really social media influencers on the make.

They thought they could take these silly risks but it didn't pay off.

When they get out (which they will eventually) they will probably make a load of money by seeling their story.

I'm sorry but I think they were extremely naive but also very vain and greedy.

Lilyflower Sat 21-Feb-26 13:53:21

I do feel sorry for the couple but also vexed at the way they wittingly gave a tyrannous state the opportunity to blackmail and taunt a free and decent land.

BlueBelle Sat 21-Feb-26 13:56:45

I don’t agree that they were ‘not thinking’ They were
arrogant and didn’t take advice given, they knew best
Everyone knows if you’re advised to not step into a country then you don’t step in that country
Ten years is a very long time so i hope for their sakes it gets reduced but they really were fools and the British government shouldn’t have to get in a pickle to save stupidity and arrogance

BlueBelle Sat 21-Feb-26 14:01:28

I don’t feel sorry for them I have fear for them because of the conditions they will be living in, but no sympathy from me and the same goes for people with health problems who go overseas without insurance or without declaring an illness then rely on Gofundme to pay off their huge hospital debts or to get them home

Maremia Sat 21-Feb-26 14:08:00

It's a hard way to learn a lesson.

Witzend Sat 21-Feb-26 14:10:59

I just hope our govt. won’t end up paying £££££ of taxpayers’ money to induce Iran to release a pair of idiots whose trouble is entirely of their own, recklessly stupid making.

Shazmo24 Sat 21-Feb-26 14:12:17

Having been to Iran for a trip in the early 2000's the aim is to keep your head down, be respectful & dont do anything that makes you stand out.
They say that they had the right documentation to enter but that does not make you totally safe. There are people everywhere who can report you to the authorities.
The majority of Iranians are lovely I should add.
They should have never ever gone into the country - if they used Social Media then the Govt would have seen it and acted

Jojo1950 Sat 21-Feb-26 14:13:19

I agree they were very very stupid! Their own fault. They must have known the outcomes for others who travelled to Iran.
However. As for visiting Iran I would have loved to. Sounds like such an interesting country and wonderful things to visit. I’m too old now and not healthy but hopefully one day in the future Iran will open up to visitors and be welcomed. Wouldn’t that be amazing. Let us all be friends! China is another country I would have loved to visit along with Israel. We can live in hope that peace will be our word for the future. ❤️

CatherineMary Sat 21-Feb-26 14:24:25

Lindsay and Craig Foreman were very naive if they thought they could travel unimpeded through Iran. I feel sorry for them and for their son who had to quit
his sales job last year to devote his time to their cause.
Hopefully they will be released from prison before too long more.

Elsi Sat 21-Feb-26 14:26:29

They were stupid arrogant and also nieve and ignored all sensible advice.unfortunately. now wanting to be helped which will now mean money, time, effort , etc.etc.by uk government!! (Again) will they get it?

4allweknow Sat 21-Feb-26 14:29:41

Wonder how much a bounty Iran will demand for an early release.

Labradora Sat 21-Feb-26 14:39:39

Stupid and naive beyond belief.
Agree what part of Nazarin -Zaghari-Radcliffe's detention as a political pawn didn't they understand. She moreover had an infant child but still was forced to serve about 5 years I think.
Iran is after any influence or levers in the gulf that it can get given the current state of play between the US and Iran. UK has refused to allow Trump was to use Diego Garcia for strikes on Iran. Are the Foremans useful hostages to make sure the UK doesn't change its' mind? Just a thought.

OldFrill Sat 21-Feb-26 14:41:54

They claimed they had a visa and a guide, but they chose to publish photos on social media of their time in Iran, whilst still there. I hope the Iranians who featured in these photographs are safe and weren't arrested, l somehow doubt it.

They were travelling the world asking the question "What makes a good life?" Not being stupid twats generally learnt by aged 10 helps.

FranP Sat 21-Feb-26 14:44:54

Am I right, that these were the idiots photographing an airfield?? Not just "travelling through". No wonder....
