"In my day" - late 1960s nice girls didn't do casual sex, a long protracted courtship was the rule, a girl with a known "history" was passed by. Im sure it was different in cities but rural areas were pretty traditional, in my case when granny approved of me I knew I was onto a winner.
Our daughters 20 yrs later all shacked up with boyfriends at 18 and stayed with them, not many do that these days.

Apparently it is one in 10 men who have used a prostitutes, in the UK. It is bizarrely much higher in Spain of all places.

" Researchers asked men in the UK if they had ever used a prostitute".

10 % admitted they had. 90% denied it"

Perhaps the true answer was somewhere in between.

David49 - I certainly can see that there's even a noticeable number of women these days in the "dating agegroup" that deliberately go in for casual sex. Times have changed a lot since I was in that agegroup back in the 1970s and I wasnt doing casual sex - if I found out (in hindsight) that I'd just been "used" by an unscrupulous man not letting on that he thought/was telling himself things were "casual" when they werent at all = I was not very happy.

I would honestly wonder just how one is supposed to have a relationship these days - when I see younger people doing Facebook announcements of being "in a relationship" when I'm there thinking "Huh? But they already were....they've been sleeping together for months. What's that about? What does it mean - are they engaged?"

Oh going "exclusive" .....errrrm....cue for puzzled me thinking "Well - werent you anyway by definition?" I'm blowed if I know how I'd navigate the "dating relationship scenario" in this day and age - when previously I knew that of course they were my boyfriend if we'd slept together and of course we were exclusive (cue for getting betrayed several times - as the man concerned didn't seem to know/want to know that fact).

I think I'd just give up the whole idea of dating totally ever these days if I had my time again - the risk would be far too high of getting betrayed basically. Men would stay as platonic friends full stop and no attempt to "find a boyfriend" - far too much hassle to figure out what integrity/standards they did (or didnt) have ...

The thought of trying to figure out where a man stood on all that - as well as the "suss them out as to degree of liberation - or otherwise - re whether they knew/took it for granted" that if the relationship had got really serious = of course they would be doing their 50% of the housework and not treating me as an unpaid maid doing some/all of it for them would feel like far too much of a headache to figure out.

Pie usually nails the crux of the matter. I share his hatred of the dreadful exploitation of women that A seems to have been a party to - and the cover up - even to the extent of buying people off. It is disgraceful.

Well that about sums it up ...

The man in your link looked to be positively relishing this 🤦‍♀️

To put it into context only Epstein has been convicted of any crime, all the rest is allegations therefore they are innocent under the law.
However AMW deserves all the grief he has caused himself, maybe he will be convicted, maybe not, his behavior is disgraceful for a public person. Using prostitutes is not a lifestyle to be proud of for anyone, to do it openly is much worse. If anyone I knew was openly living like that I would seriously question his character.
Casual sex is different with couple forming long term relationships much later, many single men and women have 10 yrs of casual sex for mutual enjoyment, a few never do settle down with one partner.

Tom Walker ( the real Jonathan Pie) won best comedy show on Radio 4 last year.
Make what you will of that 🤷‍♀️

That he had the best comedy show on R4 last year?
Imo I think he gets a bit samey but what he’s actually doing is completely legitimate and sometimes makes me laugh.

Grannygravy- of course he was. Pie is a fictional character played by a comedian. He’s been around for ages and used many high profile situations in this way.

Some years ago unknowingly one of our tenants was a working girl. She had rented from us for 6 years and we never knew until she moved out. She kept the flat in beautiful condition, rent paid on time every month.
At this time we were living abroad and she was the best tenant we ever had.
We decided not to let the flat out but use it for when we came back to the uk.
When we moved back to the uk we lived in this flat. One day the intercom phone went. A male voice asked if miss smith was there.
I politely told him, no.
Went out onto the balcony to see what he looked like. What a surprise, he was a very handsome 6’ young man in very early twenties 🤷‍♀️

Has got idea Spanish women live a more "restricted"/traditional lifestyle shall we put it than British women???

Now goes off wondering just how many British men have "used a woman as an unpaid prostitute" - or is it only 1950s born women that have found their "new boyfriend" wasn't at all - as, in his mind, he was just thinking "fun" - while she was thinking "Oh he's my boyfriend" and then wondering why he promptly vanished.

Maybe the next generation or two don't think like that anymore - but I know our generation got caught out as "piggy in the middle" between 1950s rules of "Not a chance mate before marriage" and therefore couldnt get used like that and subsequent generations to ours who may be thinking just the same way as the men - ie couldnt care less/"just a bit of fun".

Our family home was in Spain for many years, the locals hanging around and going in the club or alterne were the same men who hung around the beaches/bars hoping to pick up a drunk female tourist.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 24-Feb-26 08:37:31

Of course. That absolutely makes sense. Paying for sex is a transaction that has no emotion attached to it. The women have almost always become prostitutes because no other source of income is open to her. There is a high level of violence within their world and the women are reduced to nothing more than goods that can be bought and sold. It very much suits the narrative of the rich and powerful men involved in this world.

Galaxy Tue 24-Feb-26 08:18:31

That is through their whole life and just based on a quick Google! So figures for example 'in the last year' are much lower.
I don't know about age, etc, but i do know that men who use prostitutes are more like to figure in the violence against women statistics and other violent crimes the those who dont.

Iam64 Tue 24-Feb-26 08:12:33

I’m surprised it’s that high. It would be interesting to know more about their characteristics - age, occupation, frequency, marital status.
