Could I ask, once again, that we are polite enough to let those watching the video to discuss it. There are other threads for general discussion. Thank you

Finally, the latest economic figures are pretty much wall to wall good news. Unemployment needs some effort, but today's figures show the economy turning a corner. If it continues, will it start to filter through to ordinary people's perceptions?

For anyone who would rather read than watch, you can click on the link. Underneath you can see a short paragraph followed by "more ...", click on this. Scroll down a little to "transcript" and click on that. You can then read what the video says.

Yes this is encouraging stuff indeed.

He's spot on right at the beginning when he says the Andrew Mountbatten stuff has been a perfect way of burying these figures.
I wonder if the figures had been opposite, worse than expected, whether the main news headlines would have buried them then? I suspect they'd have squeezed them in.

It is very good news indeed. The coverage doesn't matter too much- it is whether people are really feeling better off and I am beginning to after a few years of struggling.

Let's all feel the same soon!

A move in the right direction🙏

I really hope those who have been struggling for years start to feel the benefit.

I don’t expect the MSM to comment on this but I no longer care about what they say - I’ve given up on them.

But it us important just now, to get the message out, as there are some possibly defining election happening soon.

I wouldn't get too excited about this. The economy is still weak. The last growth figure was 0.1%.

The increase in tax revenue can be accounted for by fiscal drag, frozen personal allowances bringing more people into the taxable income bracket and higher tax brackets, some increase in wages which have the same effect, and businesses reporting gains earlier to beat the increase in capital gains related tax to be implemented in April this year.

Additionally, interest payable on index linked bonds have reduced because of base rate cuts during 2025-26, savings from this boost the headline rate of incoming revenue.

As the increases in tax have taken money out of the economy and we don't know if, when and where this 'surplus' is to be reinvested by the government, we don't know if it will increase economic activity. leading to growth in the next year.

We also don't know how much new money the government intends to spend into the economy. If it continues to depend on taxation and restricts its bond sales we'll end up with money in short supply.

Inflation is falling, and I notice petrol prices have dropped by about 6 pence a litre since Christmas and food prices in supermarkets have stopped rising. You have to understand this isn't purely a British problem as there was a surge in prices worldwide following the pandemic and an energy crisis.

Sorry I haven’t seen any evidence of this, tbh.
My shopping is £30 more than it was 6 months ago.
Our bills are through the roof, even though we are very careful.

The "squeeze" has been real MT62 - around the world. If you watch the video you will see no one is suggesting these improvements in the economy have yet got through to people's personal economy. However, the government is now able to show that their plans for managing government spending are working. The volume of retails sales jumped up in January. Some people are feeling more confident, better off or that wouldn't happen. This has been the strongest monthly growth in nearly two years.

Stock market growth is also improving. Millions of pension investments benefit from this. This is all the opposite of the effects of the Conservative Liz Truss budget.

Hopefully on the up DAR🙏
