Another little bit of balance on GN as Max from @UNFTR breaks down the Supreme Court decision striking down Trump’s tariffs and the administration’s response.

This edition of Macro Take also digs into a slew of catastrophic economic data releases that piled up over the week from inflation and jobs to slowing GDP and flashing red lights in the financial markets.

It’s just caused further global chaos:.

Global Tariff Chaos - yet the US stock market remains strong.

My worry is that if/when Trump gets stopped there will be the most almighty market crash that will make the GFC look like picnic in the park.
He is determined to carry on, if he is defeated in the mid term elections it's going to be a massive task reversing everything and if we believe the Democrats no money to do it.

I was reading that there is a lot of collateralised debt driving that. Like the run up to the GFC.

I think that some ‘investors’ are going to try to realise their gains at the ‘top’ of the market and the whole lot will crumble.

We don't often agree, but if Trump is removed that will trigger the crash so we can't win.

If he goes then Dance becomes President, not sure that's any better.

I don't understand Trump's obsession with tariffs as it seems to hurt the people of the USA as much as the exporting countries. The man is so deluded it is hard to see how he's lasted so long! I understand he talked about going for a third term and changing the law to make that possible, but hopefully that won't become a reality!

Whitewavemark2 Tue 24-Feb-26 16:37:04

He will probably continue to shoot himself in the foot anyway over the tariffs. Best to just sit back and let him.

imaround Tue 24-Feb-26 16:34:29

I am not watching it. I can't stand the sound of his voice and it is full of lies anyhow. It's more of a drinking game at this point. Though Dems are sitting Epstein survivors front and center.

Immigration is also being used to divide British people. Shameful and shocking what some believe if it confirms their racist beliefs.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 24-Feb-26 16:30:03

State of the union later today. Wonder how garbled and petulant that will be?

Whitewavemark2 Tue 24-Feb-26 16:29:04

I see that various countries are beginning to withdraw from trade negotiations - India for one.

Bet Starmer is p….d off for dashing in so quickly.

Just listening to some criticism - Trump is trying to trash one if the arms of the constitution - the courts - and the congress has not, as they should have done, stood up and defended this arm of the constitution.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 24-Feb-26 15:10:42

Well he did say that he could destroy the USA if he wanted to.

imaround Tue 24-Feb-26 15:06:52

Multiple are suing, though I don't have a list. He is going to bankrupt us for generations.

J52 Tue 24-Feb-26 14:43:11

Fed-Ex is suing Trump for lost revenue due to the ‘illegal’ tariffs. I wonder if other companies will follow suit.

pluckyluckyme Tue 24-Feb-26 14:21:10

Trump has no intention of leaving no matter what. So far he has confirmed that he can pretty much do what he wants using anything at his disposal and making up the rest. Dangerous times indeed especially as the far right in this country want to emulate him and his policies. People are being blinded by the so called immigration problem and divided deliberately by resentment and hate. Here it is the sick and disabled and the immigrants that apparently are to blame for all society's problems. Not the the people pulling the strings , not the people making huge amounts of money at society's expense.

That incident with the young man is very strange. He had a shotgun, which makes me think 'farming community'. Usually assassins have rifles. Or assault weapons. As far as I am aware you only get 2 tries with a shotgun. Security claims they told him to put down the items. Hope they can prove this.
Trump wasn't ever there at the time.

Most common are double barrel guns but Automatic Shotguns can have 10 or more cartridges, at up to 50 yards they are lethal and you don't have to be accurate. Rural areas have far more shotguns widely used for bird shooting, small ground pests and clay pigeon targets.

Now they are saying he was a white Christian MAGA supporter who was annoyed with the Epstein Files delay.
White House had earlier tried the demented Democrat lie.

I think we see our lack of a written constitution as an asset in these times too- especially as Trump ignores the constitution. Power resting in the hands of one person can work if that person is honest and acts in the interests of the people, but recent events has shown that if you elect a proven liar and felon who is only lining his own pockets then the consequences become very serious indeed. The checks and balances in the US need appraising to enable the reinforcing of the constitution if it blatantly transgressed.

Maybe the US needs to rip it up and start again, especially the right to bear arms thing?

I don't think Trump and his cronies will go down without a fight- it seems a long time till the mid-terms.

Allira Mon 23-Feb-26 11:09:12

Which is why our system is preferable imo, in that no one person holds such power as the POTUS and the checks and balances in our system distribute the power throughout.

MaizieD Mon 23-Feb-26 10:58:57

How do voters remove politicians where you are?

There is a method called a 'Recall Petition' for individual members of Parliament (MPs) which is explained here:

www.electoralcommission.org.uk/voting-and-elections/how-elections-work/types-elections/recall-petitions

A Prime Minister can be removed by a vote of no confidence going against them in Parliament. Or they could be forced into resigning by a number of ministerial resignations (as Johnson was)

But our PM isn't our Head of State and isn't at all similar to your President, who is your Head of State. Our Head of State is the Monarch and we can't do anything to get rid of him or her... OTOH, our monarch, although influential in many ways, doesn't actually try to run the state...

That was not a simple talk, but his summaries make sense.
Basically, Trump does not have the skills he thinks he has. He squanders all that he inherits.

I'm glad you got something out of it Maremia. Sadly, squandering your inheritance from your father is one thing, squandering the countries is another.

Meidas Touch commentaries are often quite in-depth. As far as I can tell they were set up to keep the law front and centre so quite a few speakers are lawyers who give very detailed information about what is happening in the courts - not often available in the mainly right-wing press.

They bring in others with different disciplines for different areas such as this. I think it fits the long-form content description, providing in-depth, high-value material.

Well, a young man has been shot and killed for trying to break into Mar-y-largo today with a gun and a petrol can.
