Disruption of flights

I am wondering if this will be long term and whether they actually thought of this aspect of this war bringing the world to a standstill . A friend was lucky to get back here after a funeral, all the flights were cancelled shortly after he managed to get through. Financially it would be very hard if you were stuck overseas - we were once stuck for a week on an island during Covid and had to pay all the extra board and meals etc. Often you cant insure against things like wars etc. Trivial if you are caught in a war zone but still very difficult, especially for young ones on a tight budget.

My daughter & her partner are stuck in Malaysia. They were due to fly to Abu Dhabi today then on to Heathrow from there. Home tomorrow. Etihad cancelled their flight.
They have looked at other flights to London but they want £4000-£5000.

We only just avoided being in Tehran when the Shah fell, we were supposed to be flying there to work the week after it happened.
Some of our friends were living there and it was very frightening, bullets flying over their heads as they lay on the floor in their apartments.
The Iranians turned on their own people who had any connection to the western companies who were working there, in health services or who were building essential services. Many were killed, though few were foreigners.
Whilst I feel sorry for those who are stuck in any of those countries under attack, it is harder to feel sorry for anyone who is only there for a holiday when it has been obvious for weeks that the region was becoming increasingly unsettled.

I used the word trivial twice, following on from the OP's use, so I might need to explain.

It is a piffling nuisance that the F1 teams and their entourage have had their flights disrupted this week, but in the bigger picture it is hardly serious. It's a trivial annoyance that they've got to reorganise themselves, and no doubt pay more money, but they're not caught up in it like some poor family members on here.

Yes, absolutely!

^I think the trivial means flights being disrupted so people have holiday plans disrupted, not that being caught up in conflict is trivial.^

That is not how I, and others it seems. read some of the comments.

Obviously people being unable to get home and left in a dangerous place is not trivial, but being unable to go on holiday because flights are disrupted is not in the same category as people being in a war zone and being killed.

Perhaps others may disagree and think it's just as dreadful.
I don't; it's upsetting yes.

It makes you wonder why they want to be there in the first place? I don't mean those who work work there, but the hundreds of British of influencers who influence from there!

Like Oakshott and Tice?

They don't pay tax there!

Dreadwitch I agree with you!
Remember Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria none of them have ended well have they! I really oppose any actions by us in this ! As I opposed going into Iraq
As for Tice and Oakshott, London was too dangerous wasn’t it? Karma!

Etoile2701 Mon 02-Mar-26 16:14:40

No sympathy for those two from me.

I have a cousin and a friend who has a very young family and not being able to fly out of Dubai doesn't seem trivial to me. If it was just Iran being affected, I might have some positive feelings towards Trump's actions but it is a sh*t show with too many regions being brought into the fighting. It is quite terrifying.

I think you've misunderstood.

"I hope they stay safe "

The same message to all who have family in the places which are being hit.

My family are extremely worried. My oldest granddaughter, her husband and baby live in Doha and recently moved to a new apartment close to the air base. They can see the explosions and their apartment rattles. They had a few brief hours of respite from loud explosions and bombing last night, and then it started up again. They are trying to stay calm for the baby.

We are praying for peace.

I hope they stay safe Sparklefizz

One of DD's friends has been seeing bombs dropping on buildings opposite his apartment in Dubai.

DD is here, she came with Qatar last time but this time with Singapore, thankfully and going home via Singapore. 🤞

Let's hope it will be over soon.

“It makes you wonder why they want to be there in the first place? I don't mean those who work there, but the hundreds of British of influencers who influence from there!”

Simple reason Brits are moving to Dubai in their droves, is because it is a tax free haven for them of working there. At most they may pay 5% Vat on services. It is a young persons country - sun, sea, beaches, bars, modern apartments etc.

Yes, good luck to them.
I guess I'm older and wiser. I know the dream life doesn't last forever.l!

Appartently 100,000 Brits have applied to fly out of the Middle East.

crazyH Mon 02-Mar-26 13:55:42

What a worrying time - hope everything will be sorted without too much disruption or harm to anyone.

Dreadwitch Mon 02-Mar-26 13:51:10

Seeing what you saw is irrelevant, the regime is still in power... The world may not have planned for this but Iran has.
And I'm sure the same thing was said about the invasion of Iraq, yet that led to the destabilising of the entire Middle East.
Bombing countries and interference is never a good thing, and you seem to be ignoring what comes next and only thinking about a few planes being cancelled. The bigger picture is far worse and I for one am not prepared to have to suffer for people in another country that is none of Trumps or anyone else's business.
Governments decided to punish Putin, but it was us, the general public that suffered because of the sanctions and we're still suffering now. Is your empathy with Iranians so great that you're happy to at best pay higher prices for everything and at worst enter ww3?

A big thank you to everyone who has posted supportive comments re my Granddaughter, husband and baby who live in Doha, and my thoughts go out to all of us who have loved ones in the Middle East. Much love.

It’s a worrying time, all we can do is keep in contact, along with hope and pray.

Our WhatsApp is very busy.
