Disruption of flights

I am wondering if this will be long term and whether they actually thought of this aspect of this war bringing the world to a standstill . A friend was lucky to get back here after a funeral, all the flights were cancelled shortly after he managed to get through. Financially it would be very hard if you were stuck overseas - we were once stuck for a week on an island during Covid and had to pay all the extra board and meals etc. Often you cant insure against things like wars etc. Trivial if you are caught in a war zone but still very difficult, especially for young ones on a tight budget.

My d.i.ls parents are going to Dubai en route to Singapore .i don’t know what will happen

This action was necessary to end decades of misery brought on by Irans brutal regime.

To see videos of young Iranians removing their hijabs and singing and dancing in the streets made me cry.

Disrupted travel is irrelevant.

Dubai is shut at the moment, let’s hope not for long. It has been struck by Iranian missiles. Very scary and unsettling .

That’s why I said ‘trivial’ in the scheme of things, didn’t you see that ?

Trivial I know,

but it has caused chaos to several f1 teams travelling to Australia for next week's races. I think those travelling Down Under are being moved on to flights via Hong Kong and Singapore. Of course they have the money to simply get themselves around the world any which way.

I saw one of those plane tracker sites early on, and the aircraft were like little ants processing away from the area.

Trivial I know.

My son was one of the last flights out of doha to Perth on Friday. All subsequent flights were cancelled , thank goodness he wasn't stuck in Doha . I'm not sure he would have gone ahead with the trip if he'd known what was coming . We are worried about him getting home if they don't reopen airspace . We also have friends in Dubai . It is a very worrying time for Brits caught up in it and innocents are going to suffer .Let's pray for peace .

It's easy to say disrupted travel is irrelevant if you're not caught up in it but if you're stuck in a war zone it certainly is very relevant.

My family are extremely worried. My oldest granddaughter, her husband and baby live in Doha and recently moved to a new apartment close to the air base. They can see the explosions and their apartment rattles. They had a few brief hours of respite from loud explosions and bombing last night, and then it started up again. They are trying to stay calm for the baby.

We are praying for peace.

Yes, events can be 'trivial' when not affecting you and yours.

Shelflife Sun 01-Mar-26 15:08:52

Oh my goodness sparkefizz, such a worry for your whole family, sincerely hope they stay safe.

DS works for an American company in the Middle East and was due to be out there. Fortunately his company is very cautious with its employees, and for the last few weeks there has been a ban on all staff members travelling there.
I hope others' relatives stay safe, and can get back home from their travels.

Maremia Sun 01-Mar-26 16:33:13

Yes, Sparklefizz, it could be all over soon.

Sparklefizz, I am so sorry that you and your family are going through this. Sending best wishes to you all for your DGD's safety and that of her husband and baby, and joining you in praying for peace. flowers

It’s a worrying time, all we can do is keep in contact, along with hope and pray.

Our WhatsApp is very busy.

Seeing what you saw is irrelevant, the regime is still in power... The world may not have planned for this but Iran has.
And I'm sure the same thing was said about the invasion of Iraq, yet that led to the destabilising of the entire Middle East.
Bombing countries and interference is never a good thing, and you seem to be ignoring what comes next and only thinking about a few planes being cancelled. The bigger picture is far worse and I for one am not prepared to have to suffer for people in another country that is none of Trumps or anyone else's business.
Governments decided to punish Putin, but it was us, the general public that suffered because of the sanctions and we're still suffering now. Is your empathy with Iranians so great that you're happy to at best pay higher prices for everything and at worst enter ww3?

crazyH Mon 02-Mar-26 13:55:42

What a worrying time - hope everything will be sorted without too much disruption or harm to anyone.

fancythat Mon 02-Mar-26 13:59:52

Appartently 100,000 Brits have applied to fly out of the Middle East.

It makes you wonder why they want to be there in the first place? I don't mean those who work work there, but the hundreds of British of influencers who influence from there!

Simple reason Brits are moving to Dubai in their droves, is because it is a tax free haven for them of working there. At most they may pay 5% Vat on services. It is a young persons country - sun, sea, beaches, bars, modern apartments etc.
