Shabana Mahmood has announced plans to pay £10,000 per person with a maximum of £40,000 for families of 4 or more as an incentive to leave the UK. These people are failed asylum seekers and have no right to be here so AIBU in thinking this money would be far better spent elsewhere? Surely having no right to stay means they should be deported and incentives shouldn't come into it.

Agree. They have failed in their claim so should not get anything.

It’s a big incentive for traffickers.

They could recruit professional entrants who travelled regularly and split the money, probably K30/10.

Even I can work this one out as a profitable business.

Not quite that simple and only a pilot scheme for 150 families. They have seven days to decide.

I can read that. It’s a paywall. Anywhere else?

can’t read it.

Goodness, whatever next! Seems like no govt can stop asylum seekers entering illegally. May seem very simplistic, but if these are failed AS, why can they not simply be deported? Or are they appealers?

paddyann54 Thu 05-Mar-26 15:32:26

Where is the sense in removing immigrants from safe accommodation and turfing them out in the streets ?That is a recipe for disaster with the right wing /reform led hatred on the rise

MT62 Thu 05-Mar-26 15:35:31

I have heard it all now 😩

Why pay them? Where will they go?

Why not just put them on a flight back to their own country?
Of course, the problem now is that it could be in a war zone.

Can anyone apply? At the moment, I think I'd prefer to be elsewhere.

You just need to collapse down the bit that appears asking for money. I got caught out initially thinking it had gone 'paywall'.

pably15 Thu 05-Mar-26 16:06:36

No wonder they keep on coming here, come on in illegally we'll then give you £10,000 to go back, bring your family and we'll raise that to £40,000. yes ,that's definitly getting tough with them, what a joke

Grandmadinosaur Thu 05-Mar-26 16:27:52

Words fail me.
And there was no money in the coffers for waspi payouts. 😬

Very surprised.
If a family made it to our waters, failed the legal asylum criteria, and go away with that amount of money,
how is it supposed that they can be prevented from trying again in 12 months time?
By the way I am not opposed to families coming here from countries in conflict, legally. Integrating and working to a better, safe life.

Words fail me too! No money to compensate WASPIs but hey ho there is always money for those who shouldn’t be here in the first place!!

Thanks.

I don’t understand the offering money to failed asylum seekers either.

Can anybody explain why they shouldn’t just be repatriated?

I am happy for families coming here for safety and a better quality of life too. Most families seem to apply through the proper channels these days.
This new scheme is full of holes.

Where did you read a the small print Sarnia? I just looked, I can’t find it.

Well, there's another unintended notch in Reform's belt, I would imagine.

glammagran Thu 05-Mar-26 17:20:50

Can you imagine giving them 10,000 to leave and then 3 months later them reappearing for another handout.
