Glasgow Fire

Just looking at the devastation caused by the fire yesterday. Sad to see an historic building virtually wiped out.

It appears that a small number of the shopkeepers affected have started GoFundMe appeals to replace equipment, stock and supplies, readily admitting that they don't have contents insurance.

I can't make up my mind who are more stupid - the shopkeepers for not trading responsibly and expecting others to pay for their mistake and poor business sense, or the people who have actually donated.

As you say, not generally reported.
I only know what was reported on/in the news.

Apologies if it is erroneous.

Maremia Tue 10-Mar-26 10:00:18

I know Allira, but the fire took a while to get going, and there were others who tried to help.

Maybe they don't want to be interviewed. OldFrill.
Were they the two lads who dragged that person away just before the explosion?

It was reported here that that was Lamin Kongira.

I think it has been GG13

It is a real shame whenever an old and beautiful building is destroyed, thankfully no lives were lost.

Lithium batteries are stable unless they are tampered with, over heated or of dubious origin/manufacturing.

Let’s hope this is a wake up call to Scottish and UK authorities when licensing these premises.

My thoughts exactly Friedgreentomatoes2. My very first thought, when I heard it on the radio, was - I wonder which idiots on the council approved the siting of a vape shop so close to the station.

If that's our first thought then why is it not their first thought?!

baubles Tue 10-Mar-26 06:18:17

I’m deeply saddened by the loss of this beautiful building. My father always told me to look up whenever we were walking in Glasgow, the dome was one of the many sights I remember him pointing out to me as a child.

So many people have lost their livelihoods.

Vape shops are targeted over here in Oz all the time to the extent that a lot of shopping centres won’t allow them . We have a lot of illegal tobacco mainly because cigs are very expensive here. Organised crime runs it .

Vape shops need to be vetted now to find out how fire safe they are.

Certainly!

How many more 'ticking timebombs' are in our high streets?

The hero of the hour was an immigrant, Lamin Kongira, who tried to put out the fire then managed to get another person away before the building exploded.

There were two young local lads who tried to put the fire out too, Callum Robertson and Aydin Boyd. They don't seem to be making the news outside Scotland, guess it's not such a good story.

Of course not all vape shops are a front for organised crime - I have a friend whose son owns several, and he is a born and bred Scotsman. However, there are also many which are - ask any police officer working in that field and they will confirm that (along with some of the many nail bars and barber shops which appear to be springing up all over the place).

There have been many raids and arrests on such establishments as many are run by OCG and employ illegal immigrants.

Maremia Mon 09-Mar-26 21:26:23

Think the problem started when they change the sort of battery used.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Mon 09-Mar-26 21:06:08

Oh paddyanne your dander was well and truly up.
However, I do need to set the record straight for you.

My comment was not bigotry nor am I small minded.

Google is your friend here :-

“Significant numbers of vape shops in the UK are linked to organized crime, with law enforcement identifying them as fronts for money laundering, selling illegal, non-compliant vapes, and illicit tobacco. Operation Machinize has targeted thousands of premises, seizing millions in illicit goods and cash.”

See?
Significant numbers.
Admittedly not ‘all’ so I’m quite happy to concede that your fellow citizens are law abiding.

You did seem very het up about the topic so I thought it would be best to explain my viewpoint on the subject. Courteously.

Beautiful Grade ll listed designed by Sir John Burnet who created the British Museum.
Lost to a vape seller from wherever. Absolutely horrendous.

Yes I agree, such a shame for the heritage of Glasgow.

GrannyGravy13 Mon 09-Mar-26 18:26:12

Vape shops in our vicinity are operated by Turkish, Albanians and Asians. Two have been raided by immigration authorities.

Reminds me of my friend who refuses to take Travel I surance when she goes to the USA, because her brother is a Doctor.

Galaxy Mon 09-Mar-26 17:58:24

Vaping as a whole was one of those solutions to a problem that has had many long term ill effects.

Maremia Mon 09-Mar-26 17:56:05

It has been a loss, on many levels.

Aren’t a lot of vape shops outlets for money laundering, anyway?

Many are run by OCG.
