Glasgow Fire

Just looking at the devastation caused by the fire yesterday. Sad to see an historic building virtually wiped out.

It appears that a small number of the shopkeepers affected have started GoFundMe appeals to replace equipment, stock and supplies, readily admitting that they don't have contents insurance.

I can't make up my mind who are more stupid - the shopkeepers for not trading responsibly and expecting others to pay for their mistake and poor business sense, or the people who have actually donated.

Vape shops need to be vetted now to find out how fire safe they are.

An expert Paul Christiansen is talking now on Radio 4 and he thinks there should be some concern and checks on vale batteries.
He also mentioned that unless handled appropriately in the home they were unstable, more so if they’ve been bought illegally.

Vape not vale!

My GD was in Glasgow on the day of the fire. She saw the smoke. Luckily she was on the train home just before they closed the station.
The station will be closed tomorrow too.

Who on earth decided to permit a vape shop - a retailer with thousands of devices containing Lithium batteries, all of which are no doubt made in China, to questionable quality standards - in or near critical infrastructure such as a key national rail hub?

You wouldn’t permit a retailer selling fireworks in such a location, so why a vape shop?

😲
I hadn't heard about the cause of the fire.

However, I was surprised that this fire warranted less than 30 seconds on the BBC News last night.

They're all over the place now - so after this horrific incident, it does beg questions about how safe they are.

Aren’t a lot of vape shops outlets for money laundering, anyway?

Shame about that beautiful building collapsing 😳

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Mon 09-Mar-26 16:04:30

Beautiful Grade ll listed designed by Sir John Burnet who created the British Museum.
Lost to a vape seller from wherever. Absolutely horrendous.

Thank you MT62

Many are run by OCG.

Of course not all vape shops are a front for organised crime - I have a friend whose son owns several, and he is a born and bred Scotsman. However, there are also many which are - ask any police officer working in that field and they will confirm that (along with some of the many nail bars and barber shops which appear to be springing up all over the place).

Maremia Mon 09-Mar-26 17:56:05

It has been a loss, on many levels.

Galaxy Mon 09-Mar-26 17:58:24

Vaping as a whole was one of those solutions to a problem that has had many long term ill effects.

Reminds me of my friend who refuses to take Travel I surance when she goes to the USA, because her brother is a Doctor.

Vape shops in our vicinity are operated by Turkish, Albanians and Asians. Two have been raided by immigration authorities.

Yes I agree, such a shame for the heritage of Glasgow.

Oh paddyanne your dander was well and truly up.
However, I do need to set the record straight for you.

My comment was not bigotry nor am I small minded.

Google is your friend here :-

“Significant numbers of vape shops in the UK are linked to organized crime, with law enforcement identifying them as fronts for money laundering, selling illegal, non-compliant vapes, and illicit tobacco. Operation Machinize has targeted thousands of premises, seizing millions in illicit goods and cash.”

See?
Significant numbers.
Admittedly not ‘all’ so I’m quite happy to concede that your fellow citizens are law abiding.

You did seem very het up about the topic so I thought it would be best to explain my viewpoint on the subject. Courteously.

Maremia Mon 09-Mar-26 21:26:23

Think the problem started when they change the sort of battery used.

There have been many raids and arrests on such establishments as many are run by OCG and employ illegal immigrants.

Allira Mon 09-Mar-26 23:19:03

The hero of the hour was an immigrant, Lamin Kongira, who tried to put out the fire then managed to get another person away before the building exploded.
