Glasgow Fire

Just looking at the devastation caused by the fire yesterday. Sad to see an historic building virtually wiped out.

It appears that a small number of the shopkeepers affected have started GoFundMe appeals to replace equipment, stock and supplies, readily admitting that they don't have contents insurance.

I can't make up my mind who are more stupid - the shopkeepers for not trading responsibly and expecting others to pay for their mistake and poor business sense, or the people who have actually donated.

An iconic building lost because of vapes.

They are a scourge.

welbeck Thu 12-Mar-26 20:20:58

The whole building will be demolished.
City council has decreed.
Unsafe structure.

Yes Allira the smoking equivalent of alcopops that were aimed at young people in particular. As you say, why the need for enticing flavours, the most exotic flavour cigarettes ever had when I smoked was menthol.

It's wicked.

That's my concern rosie, I have just had a look at the stats re young people smoking v vaping. I suspected they may have created a problem for young people who would never have started smoking.

They are made in flavours to tempt young people into using them.
Unless they are sold as an aid to giving up smoking, without enticing flavours, I think they should be banned.

Vaping as a whole was one of those solutions to a problem that has had many long term ill effects.

As more and more is being learned, it’s not without its own potentially serious health consequences.

That's true but I thought the risks from vaping are thought to be less than the risks of smoking for those smokers who find it too difficult to stop completely. The biggest concern is the young people who have never smoked but take up vaping. That is an unnecessary health risk I wish they wouldn't take. Ex smoker (after multiple attempts!) here so do know how hard it is to quit.

I've watched all the war footage on TV but that of Glasgow brought me to tears. We visit quite often, and until recently always booked a room overlooking the station! Trains coming in and out nearly all night, so exciting, so as train buffs we kept jumping up out of bed . Also cried when the Art College burnt down. Will go again this year, wonderful buildings.

Central station closed until at least Sunday

I'm surprised it will re-open that soon.

Well done to the staff.

It's not known when it will reopen.

An expert Paul Christiansen is talking now on Radio 4 and he thinks there should be some concern and checks on vale batteries.
He also mentioned that unless handled appropriately in the home they were unstable, more so if they’ve been bought illegally.

If bought from a reputable manufacturer, they make it quite clear what to do and not to do re safety.

But some people refuse in their stupidity to follow these instructions - for example, they will use charging cables that are not designed specifically for the equipment - because they are cheap. Also, they might 'streamline' their vaping equipment to get more 'input', thus running the risk of overhearing the battery... they charge their devices on the carpet / bed / propped up on a cushion - leave them charging for too long which degrades the 'separator' in the battery (which will more than likely cause it to combust). The list is endless.

I've been vaping for a long time and follow all the recommendations and instructions to the letter. And never buy anything 'on the cheap', only from recognised outlets.

Which young people, though? Those starting up businesses?
Which menial posts? Why is starting up a business menial?
It's not, imo.

I'm still confused

Rosie51 Wed 11-Mar-26 14:04:23

Going by the start of that post referencing fire alarms etc I'm pretty sure paddyann meant the comments for this thread. I'm sure she'll be back to highlight the posts that are 'looking down on young folk doing "menial" jobs" the only time I've seen the word 'menial' used is in paddyann's posts, how strange.

Allira Wed 11-Mar-26 13:57:31

Instead of looking down on young folk doing “menial” jobs for heavens sake celebrate that unlike some areas we hear of they WANT to work!

We certainly don't 🙂

Just be thankful if you never needed anyone’s help on your life
Definitely the wrong thread. 🤔

Well paddyann I've reread the thread and can't find one instance of anyone looking down on young folk doing “menial” jobs but as it's so enraged you perhaps you could link to the post/posts that do, or is this an example of your anger clouding your judgement?

I couldn't find anything either.

Perhaps it's the wrong thread?

It’s the landlord who is responsible for alarms Ina commercial building .they should be linked .The owner apparently lives abroad as many of the owners of commercial businesses in Glasgowdo.
The small businesses that I have listened to ARE insured but it may take months or longer for them to see any payment,
Other local businesses including the Hilton hotel are offering workspace as a stopgap ..free or at low cost and other similar trades are offering to give equipment on loan to let these mainly young startups continue to earn a living ..
People make Glasgow …so we say …and Glasgow looks after its own.

Just be thankful if you never needed anyone’s help on your life .

The owners of Afton Estates apparently live in Edinburgh, although l imagine that could be deemed "abroad" to you 😉

The news this morning (ITV) reported that the person renting the shop did not have a licence to sell Vapes nor had they paid any business rates.

This is a terrible tragedy architecturally, a miracle that no lives were lost.

Yes, it could have been much, much worse.
