To think this so called art exhibition in Margate is nothing short of a hate crime

We've been down this road before with the so-called banker cartoons, distinct and insulting caricatures of Jewish men depicted getting rich with their feet on supposed ground down subjugated workers. Now here we are again, how is it even allowed? Jews, or Zionists if you prefer, are represented in the most racist and anti semitic way possible. For instance, the Jewish owner of Southeby's eating a baby, next to the words "Hey look I'm selling a fantastic painting while eating a baby alive"

At a time of a resurgence of unfettered prejudice against our Jewish community, always in the firing line and collectively targeted for all the ills the Israeli government has inflicted on Gaza, this timely exhibition, "Drawings Against Genocide" arrives at the gallery almost simultaneously with the Golders Green attack. Unbelievable hate filled tropes that have been passed down through history time again and again. Would it be tolerated against any other demographic? for example, different genocides, such as the one going on in Sudan, the rage level for those other atrocities where are they? and how would the supporters of this exhibition react if the perpetrators of similar acts of ethnic cleansing/genocide were cast in such a way to slur an entire race or ethnicity?

*Thread title edited by GNHQ to reflect the fact the exhibition is not at the Tate gallery*

It sounds abhorrent, Terribull, and I certainly won't be visiting. Have you visited, or just read about it? I had not heard anything about this so-called 'Art Exhibition '

It's intolerable that all Jews should be targeted because of the atrocities perpetrated by the Israeli government on Gaza.
Jews who go about their daily lives without harming others are being attacked and frightened by those filled with irrational hate. I've heard about an incident recently that left the poor man upset and afraid.
I don't know what the answer is as antisemitism has been around it seems forever.
I suppose all we can do is condemn it whenever we see or hear it.

I agree, punish or torment the majority because of the actions of a minority!

I agree it is utterly grotesque. Jews should be able to live out their lives here in the UK in peace without facing racism and violence. Have we forgotten what happened in WWII already?

Furthermore Matthew Collings can't draw. His pathetic attempts at artwork are less skilful than those of an average six year old.

I’ve just read about this exhibition. It definitely, as granfromafar says abhorrent.
I’ve never been on a demonstration, march or taken part in any public event that has a political point but I’d would show solidarity with the Jewish community on this one.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 29-Mar-26 13:58:54

Jewish folks have been victims of hate and racism for years, nothing changes.

What on earth was this gallery thinking of when deciding to put in this exhibition?

granfromafar Sun 29-Mar-26 14:01:14

I have looked on the Turner Margate' website and can't see it advertised. It still sickens me thinking about it, and how it came to be allowed.

Basgetti Sun 29-Mar-26 14:02:03

Everything else that’s abhorrent aside, who on earth decided that this person is an “artist”?

MartavTaurus Sun 29-Mar-26 14:06:25

I read this a day or so ago. It's grotesque.

We went to a town in Southern Germany, may have been Austria, and there was a fountain with a bogeyman type Jewish figure eating babies and spitting them. Horrific.

It's all designed to incite hatred of innocent Jewish people. Makes me feel sick.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 29-Mar-26 14:07:01

This exhibition is at Joseph Wales Studios, Margate not Tate Gallery Margate.

TerriBull Sun 29-Mar-26 14:12:38

Yes the drawings are shite! any year 1 pupil could do something similar or better. Matthew Collings' Jew hating, infant school efforts go for £400 a pop allegedly. I tried to post one of them, but it didn't work. Even if the content wasn't so abhorrent and sickening, I'm damned if I'd waste my time and money on an exhibition of drawings, that as you say Magenta, any 6 year old could bang out to that standard, minus the hateful content and could be seen on the walls of many an infant school.

I think it's absolutely irresponsible of Thanet Council to allow this exhibition to go ahead, its potential to fuel hatred is blatantly obvious. Unbelievable really, considering how selective we have become as a country, on what constitutes prejudice and to whom that prejudice is permissible in where it's directed Whilst simultaneously, under no circumstances should other demographics even be criticised should that criticism be deemed to besmirch whole communities.

That would explain it!

I took a look online, it’s very “modern” so not to be taste, and very insulting, so not very nice!

TerriBull Sun 29-Mar-26 14:58:08

Apologies for naming the high profile, fairly newly opened Tate in that town, very much associated in putting Margate back on the map and regenerating its image. Preferable that it's a lesser known gallery holding the exhibition. Better still not to have any such venue peddling hate material. Shame on the council for allowing it to go ahead.

We could stop excusing an exhibition of a Jew eating a baby , it’s excusing antisemitism . Should all Muslims be attacked for the horrors of 7th October 2023

sixandahalf Sun 29-Mar-26 15:30:01

Sounds absolutely vile.

Esmay Sun 29-Mar-26 15:50:50

I'm not an admirer of Matthew Collings artwork . It's very poor and smacks of plagiarism .
I'm also amazed that Thanet Council permitted a racist exhibition.
I thought that those days were over .

Unfortunately, unhappy economic climates breed discontent and blame.
This past month I'm reeling from racist remarks against me .
It's shaken me to the core .
My friends are having similar experiences ,though none have had direct insults as I have .

Oreo Sun 29-Mar-26 18:59:56

Never heard of the guy but I did read about his so called artworks.
Do Thanet Council have the power to stop it? The police aren’t backward at coming forward for hate crimes these days so why aren’t they refusing to have blatantly antisemitic works on public view?

I have to say I thought the same, about the artwork 🤣🤣

Firstly, I’m so sorry you and your friends are experiencing such appalling abuse.

Secondly, no amount of unhappy economic discontent can ever excuse such behaviour.

It’s ignorance and fear and stupidity which breeds racism, it’s never ever acceptable. No discrimination is acceptable.

It’s utterly appalling and inexcusable. This exhibition needs closing now!

Cumbrianmale56 Sun 29-Mar-26 19:33:13

Now imagine the uproar if the exhibition was one of Muslims planting bombs and chanting Alluha akbar. The artist would probably be prosecuted and the art gallery closed down. However, anti semitic art is OK, though, because everyone hates Istrael and Jews right, or probably so this warped artist thinks.
It sort of reminds me of the Jeremy Corbyn era when anti semitism became rife in the Labour Party, but because it came from the left, it was somehow OK.

Good. It should be taken down and burned.
