What Sir Denis Brogan, as long ago as 1952, called "the illusion of American omnipotence, still exists.

I'm hoping this doesn't become the usual collection of random opinions but a source of informed articles/podcasts/videos we can read or listen to. It's the latest TRIP episode that has sparked my interest on thus.

Thanks, in advance, to those who can help.

What is TRIP?

Fallingstar Wed 01-Apr-26 09:23:09

I also don’t know what TRIP is, sorry.
Am a bit lost as to what this thread is about.

A podcast called The Rest is Politics?

DaisyAnneReturns Wed 01-Apr-26 09:40:28

It's a request for information. We have some knowledgeable researchers on GN and I was asking for help.

Fallingstar Wed 01-Apr-26 09:44:24

Ah, will be interested to read what they have to say.

There is an article by Dennis Ross of the Washington post titled. ,Why the US isn't the only superpower.
Sorry can't do links but Google will find it as I am not an able researcher.

Brogan’s original 1952 piece for Harper’s is behind a subscription wall but this 1968 piece from The Bulletin of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences - The Illusion of American Omnipotence: Reconsidered is a good summary.

It was published 16 years on from when the concern was no longer the Korean War but the Vietnam War and a reminder of the song from Damn Yankees …. except Lola cannot always have what Lola wants.

is this any help? Ignore the menu! I listened to Trip whilst walking the dog this morning, thought it was very interesting and summed up American political attitudes very well.

Fascinating, and tho some of those arguments are out of date ( of course) The following passage almost epitomises the current war with Iran =
“America moved into South Viet-
nam understanding very little about the society
it was trying to save and believing that what could
be done quickly and in the American way would
be intrinsically good and invariably successful. In
actuality, very few of the structures basic to
Southeast Asia can be modified or transformed
into structures manageable in American terms. No
amount of American money, no amount of mili-
tary force can create in Vietnam the infrastruc-
tures on which a permanent political structure can be erected”

That article was over 20 years old and the conclusion no longer applies to today’s USA… that was a USA we all ‘knew’ - a friendly world power providing gorgeous holidays,Disney, cheap goods, massive meals and happy Americans ( on the surface at least) somewhere we were happy to aspire to go to, or perhaps go and work there… but who could have anticipated TRUMP!
I began with agreeing that the US moved into Vietnam ( today cite IRAN) with little understanding of their society… but Trump is a different kettle of fish, not only does he and his cronies/ Admin not understand the society, but he went into the War with a hero complex and greed for their OIL. He thought he could do the same as in. Venezuela and cut off the head and find a compliant leader to give HIM half the spoils of war. No doubt encouraged and flattered by Netanyahu who needed help to strike down all his marked enemies.
The American illusion of omnipotence is currently long gone or at the least on its way out fast, driven by the hate, bullying and division caused by one Man who has no understanding of humanity only that of GREED. ALSO the people behind him edging him on are White Nationalists, Racist, and genuinely nasty human beings. Nothing is quite that simple of course and it needs a book to describe the rise of these type of people in the States… but what Trump has done has broken that illusion into tiny pieces … and the problem is his hate and venom is spreading across Europe… let’s hope we all have the courage to stamp it out!

Yes l.think that attitude is still alive and kicking and when you look at Trump,

All of the Tech bosses and the truly evil Jeff Bezos of Amazon. And companies like Black Rock.

The Masters of the Universe Folks!

The US of A has had its century and there has begun a slow decline. China is clearly the next superpower and we can only hope that it will be as benign as America was in the mid-20th century.
