Farage/Reform got £12.000.000 before the 2024 election.

BUT

Breaking news over the last 10 hours,

Farage was given £5.000.000 by the Thai-based billionaire Christopher Harborne shortly before announcing he would stand in the 2024 general election, "for security"

Farage did not declare this, breaking parliamentary rules.

He should be held accountable by parliament and appear before a standards committee. Reform UK claim he did not break parliamentary rules. Oh really?

No one, No politician should be allowed to accept gifts without declaring them,

But £5.000.000!

Report from Reuters.

There was a "Profile" programme on Harborne today on Radio 4, well worth a listen. I don't think it is appropriate for anyone, however rich, to fund any party to the extent that Harborne has, especially if he does not pay UK taxes. However, I also believe there should be a limit on the level of donation in any one year even from UK based individuals and companies, it gives them too much power over the democratic process.

I agree and have for some time: it should be limited by law to prevent a USA situation developing.

It looks like the net is tightening as the money trail is unravelling.

So the Frinton house which he didn’t pay the second home duty on on because his girlfriend bought it, the party are now saying was paid for with his fee from I’m a Celebrity. So does he now owe some stamp duty…like Angela Rayner?

LemonJam Wed 20-May-26 13:53:33

The house in question is in Surrey- a different house to the Frinton property.

The net is tightening- perhaps thats why Farage seems to have disappeared and gone quiet? He was not in PMQs either again today- though that is in ono way unusual. I wonder if he will campaign in Makerfield laying himself open to difficult questions on the door step?

Casdon Wed 20-May-26 13:58:14

He is in Makerfield campaigning today!

LemonJam Wed 20-May-26 13:59:59

Wow- what a surprise!

Casdon Wed 20-May-26 14:04:14

He probably only has the one day he is expected to be at Westminster ‘free’ in his busy diary.

Isn’t the life of any opposition mp pretty redundant when the government has such a huge majority? What exactly is Farage supposed to do in the House in the face of 400 ?? Labour holders?

Casdon Wed 20-May-26 14:32:05

I don’t believe that is a genuine question ronib. If it is, I will find it very hard to take anything you say about politics seriously.

ronib Wed 20-May-26 14:43:52

Why isn’t it a genuine question Casdon? What is not genuine?

Maremia Wed 20-May-26 14:48:52

Because it's the 'day job'.
Is Farage too important to do the 'day job' he is voted in for?

Elegran Wed 20-May-26 15:01:26

As an MP at Westminster, he is just one of many new-boy back-benchers. He may consider the post as just an unimportant part of his portfolio of (very well-paid) jobs and not worth expending as much time and energy on as some of the others which could reap a lot more profit for his personal finances.

That risk is the reason that MPs, MSPs. MEPs and so on are expected to declare all gifts and remunerations - so that if any of the donors are in a position to receive favours from them in return for generosity, the link is not concealed.

ronib Wed 20-May-26 15:01:31

There are as everyone knows 650 MPs and 437 actual seats in the House of Commons. Nigel Farage is 97 percent aligned with the Reform Party when he votes. Obviously loads of MPs can’t physically get into the House.

Casdon Wed 20-May-26 15:08:21

He is a party leader, there is always a seat for party leaders in the house. Party leaders are expected to be present for PM questions, because that is the challenge forum for opposition parties. You must know that.

He is rarely even there for major issues on which votes are recorded. He has participated in about 33% of recorded votes since becoming an MP, which ranks among the lowest in the House of Commons. That is woeful for somebody who wants to become PM.

I’m sorry ronib, but there is no excuse for needing to ask such a basic question.

Allira Wed 20-May-26 15:10:24

MPs are known to stand in the House of Commons.

There are as everyone knows 650 MPs and 437 actual seats in the House of Commons
Time to reduce the numbers of MPs and save some money in the process?

ronib Wed 20-May-26 15:36:29

I don’t agree Casdon. Farage clearly knows how to direct his energies.
