I’ve just seen that Streeting is not going to stand, he’s come out and said he is supporting Burnham.
Goodness, for one jaw dropping moment I read
Streeting' as 'Starmer 😱
The Greater Manchester mayor expected to use a by-election fight to set out a new agenda for government. In a sign that his campaign is more progressed than previously thought and Burnham’s team is understood to have lined up an “impressive” candidate to replace him as Greater Manchester mayor.
Allies said he planned to outline a “radical rewiring” of the state in the coming weeks – including sweeping changes to the electoral system and a 10-year growth plan – after a potentially devastating set of elections on 7 May that could end Keir Starmer’s premiership.
After a fortnight that left Starmer fighting for his political future over the appointment of Peter Mandelson as US ambassador, the number of MPs backing Burnham is understood to have grown to far more than the 80 required to challenge the prime minister. However, his supporters said they hoped to avoid a formal leadership challenge and to engineer a process where Starmer would set out a timetable to stand down soon after next week’s votes for the Scottish and Welsh parliaments and councils across England.
MPs have discussed the possibility of Burnham offering Starmer the chance to stay on as foreign secretary and continue work on the Iran war and Ukraine. Ed Miliband and Angela Rayner, another leadership rival, are expected to be offered top jobs in a Burnham government.

I cannot see why Kier has to go. I cannot see he has done anything wrong.
Apart from a whole heap of things I could list[not going to as everything has been discussed before], the electorate dont like him!
Well, dont vote for him.
Labour Party, in my opinion, are heading same was as conservatives, 100 seats left!
Having already lost 1450[whatever the number was] Local Council seats.the electorate dont like him!
That is a very sweeping statement.
Many still do and are dismayed at what is happening.
Just wait to see what a mess Reform make of local government.
Of course, they may fill all the potholes 🤔
With Nigerians apparently 🤬

With lovely, sweet-smelling flowers, apparently.
He's filled in 630 so far.
After the first lorry went over it, the flowers got a bit squished.

I reckon Streeting hasn’t got the required support.
Wise move by Streeting imo. Hes been good in health and potentially a good minister
But not someone who is willing to fight when the going gets tough.
Maybe so but strategically the best move. If Burnham becomes an mp and there’s a leadership challenge, he will win it
They should take it as a sign that so far the government has been insufficiently radical and just blooming well get on with it.
I agree Luckygirl - but sadly I think the country has gone a bit bonkers.
Sounds like Burnham is already backtracking on rejoining the EU? How long before he realises the difference between being in power and not being in power and how you can’t always say or act on what you believe.
He already understands that maybee
It's a by-election. Reversing Brexit is a National conversation, not a local one.
I think Streeting has played a blinder by bringing it up, as the media are now linking Burnham's election with rejoining the EU, knowing that he is fighting a Leave constituency.
Anyone else heard that if Burnham leaves Manchester, Gary Neville would go for mayor? I know he is a labour supporter.
I'm sure he does. He couldn't have succeeded in holding such a major role as he already does without knowing that.
What he is doing is telling us what his attitude would be if in power, which matches the current Government position ie "draw closer to in ways which will benefit business and individuals in the country".
Yes, in the Brexit vote Makerfield voted "leave" - but how many businesses/individuals still think Brexit was the right turn to take as they find it difficult to source - one big example will do - building materials from Europe, the bills for which have massively risen? Or the costs of food imports from the EU?
A wise candidate will stick to the party line on Brexit, asking what happened to the "bonus for the NHS" and similar pledges and throw them back at Farage specifically.
Or - and did you know this - Farage's Reform party promising in a pre election gambit - promising to pay the energy bills of an entire street for a year in response to the Iran crisis in a sort of bare-faced "buy your vote" gambit.

Not just that, but Reform paid for garages in a key area to slash their prices for a period

(This news was in all the major papers, btw including the Telegraph, and police are still reviewing a complaint against Reform for this).
funded of course by shady sources like Harbournes substantial gifts to Reform.
(wonder what he will promise to Makerfield?)
Hmmmm.
if you google the Gary Neville speculation, top two answers are in the Telegraph and GB news.
He's only been a Party member since 2022. Honestly, how gullible can people get?

But, but he has been at conference for years and is a very likely contender I think.
Mind you I don’t know anything about him, and I won’t repeat what DH just said about him😀😀
Oh, go on....😉
Hmm. Manchester is very divided and very passionate footie wise, is it a good move to appear to single out one team...
Well it begins with t and ends in r with total preceding it😀
so, DH supports "the other" team...😬
Burnham is assuming a lot. He has to be officially endorsed as the Labour candidate and then see off the growing popularity of Reform, especially in an area that returned a huge Leave percentage in the EU referendum. The country gave Labour and its leader, Sir Keir Starmer, a huge majority to run the country and he should be allowed to do just that. I am not a Labour voter but think that those back stabbing and in fighting should be using their time to do the job they were elected to do and run the country. Maybe we would then get somewhere.
I don’t think he is assuming a lot Sarnia, given if it doesn’t work out, he will retain his mayoral position. It’s not a big gamble, knowing that.
I think that Streeting should be allowed to set out his stall without being accused of deliberately undermining, Burnham, who shouldn't be as much of a shoe-in as all that.
I thought that what we wanted was people who could state their ambitions without fearing what Farage might say! We've seen too much of that. And in any case Farage will talk about immigration, and that's what drove the Brexit vote in many areas.
