The U.K. is not like Italy

The observer has a good editorial today.

It began suggesting that Italy has become our exemplar when it comes to shuffling PMs and the un seriousness of it all. All very depressing.

But then it goes on to argue that like Italy the U.K. is better than its politics, and this is where it cheered me up.
OK we don’t have Venice, Ferrari or sunshine, but we have music that the world loves story tellers that capture the world , and I would argue the performing arts that are second to none.
The pantheon that is Stonehenge, and in fact others even older., which speaks of an extraordinary concentration of endeavour and ingenuity that has been repeated throughout the intervening centuries to today. At least a dozen of the worlds best universities who produce some of the finest minds, science and technology not to mention the Arts and literature. A creative industry with a head start throughout the world because we speak English.
London remains one of the global financial centres and we have the rule of law - so valued by business the world over, to the extent that US business and wealthy Americans have been promoted to build lives and businesses in the U.K. because of the lunacy that is Trump where the rule of law means nothing.

We have a world beating pharma industry rivalling the USA

Food in our capital that rivals if not surpasses Rome.

That cheered me up.

Both the UK and Italy are wonderful places to live and to visit, I’d have been a lot more exercised about a comparison between the UK with almost anywhere else. One difference is that Italians don’t seem to constantly complain about everything in their country, whereas Brits are serial moaners.

Oh dear, I did moan about the litter and flytipping.

That's because it is spoiling our beautiful country.

Er for the last few years we have been told that this country is responsible for every ill in the world, we have been told that institutions were institutionally racist, etc etc. It wasn't the 'far right' who started this.

Oh ssssshhhhh! I was thoroughly enjoying the positivity of this thread. I was wondering if we could start a GN initiative to repatriate British nationalism from flag-waving "patriots". Don't start a blame game.

I'm confused.

Do you mean reclaim British patriotism from British nationalists?
Patriotism meaning love of one's country, a pride in it and a desire to improve it

Nationalism means a feeling of superiority, dominance, leading to xenophobia.

Wanting Britain to be litter-free is a matter of pride and patriotic!!

I might have tried it. I will try any cheese smile so I'll look out for it.

Try Welsh cheeses!

There are dozens to choose from, it's not just Caerphilly.

I do love the UK but consider myself fortunate. Perhaps those living in poor houses in run down towns, having to work for low pay may not feel the same.

AGAA4 Sun 17-May-26 14:23:53

Y Fenni my favourite Welsh cheese.

JaneJudge Sun 17-May-26 14:27:11

I have bought lots of Welsh cheese smile

I expect those living in Calabria in the "toe" of Italy don't feel quite the same as those living in Milan or Rome. There is virtually no employment and it's said the only option is to join the Mafia.

The tragedy in both the UK and Italy is that regional equality isn't that high on the agenda. An even bigger tragedy is that the Labour Party has actually begun to do something about it, but people have still voted them out in local elections. Clacton, for example, has been given £60 million for local projects.

One place I do like to see the Union flag, and look for it, is on British produce 🇬🇧

Our fruit and vegetables, our excellent foods which haven't gained thousands of air miles, even our wine now too which can compete with the best.

I've noticed the Welsh flag flying more in the last few weeks. The Welsh are more patriotic and proud of the country.

We must not forget what the Romans did for us either 🙂

Thank you for starting this Whitewave . Your words have cheered me no end.
We are still lucky to live in this country for so many reasons.
(I have lived and travelled abroad and not been anywhere I would rather live).

Yes, me too, I always try to buy British made if I can.

TillyTrotter Sun 17-May-26 15:07:19

I love Italian food but fear I would be more ‘rotund’ if I lived there. 🙂

Even I don't object to those flags. I don't even notice them now, but if I think about it, it gives me a rosy glow to think I'm eating something which was grown in the UK.

Allira Sun 17-May-26 15:16:57

I look for them, especially now the British asparagus is in.

jenpax Sun 17-May-26 15:21:28

I think the UK is a really pretty place with stunning countryside and wonderful architecture the food is multicultural and fantastic in most places and in general the population is polite and tolerant however I think my preference is Italy it feels like home when I am there, the scenery, architecture, the food the culture it isnt perfect no where is but if I could live there I would (nothing decrying the UK however).

I look for them, especially now the British asparagus is in.

I bought a couple of kilos of asparagus from a farm in Norfolk yesterday, so I hope it's British (almost certainly not cut by British farm workers ... hmmm).

I grow my own rhubarb, beans and salad leaves and pick blackberries, blackcurrants, raspberries, gooseberries and blueberries myself (to freeze), so I know they're British. Friends give me apples, pears and plums (and even some cherries sometimes).

My meat (even chicken) is always British. I don't need a flag on any of it.

We're lucky we can grow so much, especially if people are prepared to eat crops in season.

AGAA4 Sun 17-May-26 15:33:03

twaddle the best food is always grown at home. No doubt then that it is British!
I miss all the things we grew now I no longer have a garden and have to rely on supermarket deliveries.

The only thing I would compare is the state of our roads.
The roads are lovely to drive on in Spain, I didn’t see one pot hole.
Here I feel my eyes are downwards looking for pot holes 😩

I am part of a local litter picking team, good exercise and people from all generations to chat too while we pick.

Italy has better food, weather, historical sites, ice cream so why make a comparison? Uk is a good place to live if you have enough money to live on and don't live in a depressing backwater, which is probably the same as anywhere else. Unfortunately we've lost our manufacturing industry which Italy still has including household goods, cars and textiles. Italy has more high end fashion houses.

There are some depressing backwaters ie slums in every country, including Italy, worse than in the UK.
