Lots on here today about the candidates for the Makerfield by election but nothing, as yet, on this huge news story from this morning. Nicola Sturgeons husband, Peter Murrell, pleads guilty to embezzling money from the SNP. Remanded into custody.

Not surprised 🤦‍♀️

Press conference with John Swinney at 1330, he'll be taking questions, apparently.

I nearly fell off my chair when I read the headlines this morning. It’s a shame he didn’t plead guilty at the start, to save the huge burden of cost to the taxpayer.

Aveline Mon 25-May-26 13:44:03

Yes it's cost us taxpayers a fortune. Yet somehow Nicola didn't know anything about it?? The list of stuff he bought is extensive and detailed from 2 x £5000 watches to hand cream. Plus the cars and motorhome. I reckon I'd spot my husband buying all that lot.

I think I’d be wondering why he needed these things, where the money was coming from at the very least. Not something you could hide away in a cupboard really.

Low life in high places!

👏👏👏

I hope the sentencing judge takes this into account it’s been almost 3 years now.

How on earth he didn’t think he’d get found out I’ll never know.

It was resting in his account, as Father Ted would say.

From the BBC:

Murrell spent more than £5,700 on coffee machines
published at 14:37
14:37
And the list goes on...
Murrell used SNP finances to buy a number of high-end coffee machines and luxury coffee beans.
The schedule of items includes a Miele CM 6300 machine on 24 November 2014, which cost £1,299.
Then on 1 February 2017 he used £1,865.75 of party money to buy a Jura bean-to-coffee machine.
And on 10 October 2018 he invested in a Jura 28 fully automatic bean-to-cup coffee machine, which cost £2,595.
The schedule shows Murrell bought Portuguese coffee beans on a number of occasions.
In May 2017 he spent £84.95 on five packs of gourmet beans and £123.91 on five packs of roasted beans.
Murrell also bought traditional instant coffee with SNP cash.
This included 2kg of Nescafe Gold Blend in May 2018 for £81.16.

There it is then. He was a coffee addict.

I'd like to think that Nicola Sturgeon wasn't involved. If it were me I'd rather he'd had twenty mistresses than this kind of betrayal. Some people will always think that she knew so that's a life's work and her integrity destroyed.
Apparently the money funded , among other things, "an expensive pen" FGS......

icanhandthemback Mon 25-May-26 15:08:12

I'd find it surprising if my husband was suddenly able to buy a camper van! The watches would be less noticeable to me but after the second coffee machine, I'd be asking questions, not least, why so many? Mind you, he'd probably point out my ever growing collection of sewing machines!

Rosie51 Mon 25-May-26 15:12:03

If Nicola Sturgeon really didn't wonder how he could afford all the expensive items coming into the home then was she really competent to run a country? She knew what he earned and what she earned, anybody with more than half a brain cell would realise the figures just didn't compute.

The estranged husband of former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon pleaded guilty at the High Court in Edinburgh
The court published 125 pages of documents detailing the items he bought with party funds

These included a luxury motorhome costing £124,550, a Volkswagen Golf and a Jaguar I-PACE car

Murrell’s clothing purchases included £75.55 on a men’s “slouch pouch onesie”.
He also bought about a dozen Gant shirts, a £100 pair of Timberland loafers, and about £400 worth of jackets from outdoor brand Berghaus.
Helly Hansen was another favourite, with Murrell buying a number of items including a £700 Sulphur Expedition Parka.
A further £912 was spent on a Tumi McAllen wheeled briefcase.

A man with expensive tastes. Now, if my DH suddenly popped home with a new VW, a campervan and a Jaguar I’d be slightly curious I think? Had he won the lottery? The premium bonds?
Why did he need a onesie with a man pouch?
I’d be thinking, questioning, be curious……

But presumably icanhandthemback your husband knows how you're managing to fund your sewing machine collection 😀

eazybee Mon 25-May-26 15:39:43

I doubt if they spent much time together as in a normal marriage or had little awareness of each other's finances and tastes.

Another political marriage of convenience.

Indeed! He still likes to have a little comment though. 😂

But they lived in the same house, she saw what cars he was driving, must have noticed the flash coffee machines in the kitchen, and the motorhome was pretty hard to miss!

He must have said "Oh, that old motorhome; I've had it for years"

mae13 Mon 25-May-26 16:02:40

Splashed out £110.00 on a pencil sharpener........?
