Figures such as Jane Austen and Winston Churchill are to be axed from our banknotes as they are apparently elitist and divisive and not fitting with our natural and cultural diversity.

It is decisions this that push people towards Reform and Restore.

When is all this nonsense going to stop?

Where's Allira?

I have read many of the reasons for discarding historic achievers, and evenBritish buildings and landmarks.
The conclusion I draw is that the contributors feel we should be ashamed of our past.

I do not agree.

How did you come to your conclusion?

To which particular British landmarks and buildings do you refer?

Basgetti Sat 06-Jun-26 11:54:20

Where have you read those reasons, eazybee? How does a celebration Britain’s wildlife mean it’s ashamed of its past? Really don’t understand your reasoning. It’s just a change, like stamps.

Titling a post with the issue of diversity only is just stirring up discord unnecessarily - in reality a survey was done and wildlife came out on top. That is fine.

The Bank of England officials were advised that historical figures represented a backward looking vision of the UK that carries too great a risk of division and controversy.

Today is the 82nd anniversary of D-Day without the likes of Winston Churchill and the many thousands of men and women that fought for Great Britain we would probably have Swastikas in our banknotes.

I would like our historical figures to remain on our currency.

I would like them to remain too. Another small step to erase our history

My grandad was a veteran of the Somme and a firewarden in London during the blitz. He was an avid gardener, won prizes for his dahlias and had an encyclopaedic knowledge of Britain’s bird life.
I know what he would rather have seen and it wouldn’t have been Mr. Churchill.

I voted last week, so did DH. It's open to anyone, just Google it.

I’m happy with wildlife though would have been equally happy with architecture.
Lots of wildlife in my garden, slugs , snails,
Millipedes but I don’t suppose we’ll see those.
Probably the robin, sparrow, out many species of butterfly and out wide variety of wildflowers. Oh and foxes and badgers too hopefully.

Bellanonna Sat 06-Jun-26 12:44:47

Allira do you usually Quordle? I find it challenging but fun.

We were saying last night that a mayfly or dragonfly would be beautiful.

Well I don't know how they chose the very limited choices for each of the 3 categories, but there are in my opinion some glaring omissions. Why no robin, sparrow, ladybird, red squirrel, red deer, roe deer, shetland pony, shire horse, blue tit, red admiral butterfly to name but a few native and iconic wildlife to our shores?

SueDonim Sat 06-Jun-26 13:05:23

I don’t often see English notes, living in Scotland and mostly using a bank card anyway. Some Scottish notes have wildlife on them, otters and salmon, and I like them, they’re beautiful works of art.

My previous passport had wildlife imprints on it, my current, burgundy, one has a mix of architecture, maps, people, artworks, inventions, transport etc. I’ve never really looked at it before, it’s rather lovely. I don’t know what the new-style passports are like. I’ll find out in 2029, when I get a new one!

I get annoyed with those who want to conveniently airbrush some of our history. If they want to modernise the look of banknotes then say so but don't use the excuse they were 'elitist and divisive'. Jane Austen and Churchill were of their time.
I shudder to think who the woke brigade would like to see on our currency. Britain has a wealth of wonderful wildlife, so I am more than happy to go with that.
