Grooming was a key element of the crime and conviction. Grooming involves manipulation and considers whether it was part of organised Child Sex Exploitation which it was. Thus this was a key factoring his sentencing which at 21 years was higher than the tariff for rape, between 6 and 19 years.
That he was a gang leader also was an aggravating factor that contributed to his 21 year life sentence. Since his actions we know the authorities have moved forward in understanding CSE- as we know the police at the time, 2009, made some terrible judgements e.g. some victims may have been under age prostitutes.
The press picked up on the judge's sentencing remarks at time of conviction no doubt and the label has stuck. The label does have the benefit however of spelling out the risks of CSE and grooming and that men can operate in gangs- to vulnerable young girls.

Rochdale - Grooming gang leader released from jail today
(87 Posts)Andy Burnham would like to see him deported, I think it would be a real coup if he could somehow find a way to reverse the legislation that would allow this appalling man, the grooming gang leader, convicted of 30 rapes to remain here. Although I don't hold out too many hopes on that happening, any thoughts on the matter.

Sadiq Khan pretends not to understand what is meant by grooming gangs. Shameful!
He sticks his fingers in his ears and goes “la,la la.”
He is absolutely hopeless and avoids the truth.

And these rape gangs are apparently still operating ruining young girls lives. The corruption and rot/cover up must go high up in goverment imop.
othing will be done. There will be a few noises for a week or two then it will be quietly dropped, probably under cover of a Burnham coronation with great fanfares to distract us all.
No wonder Maggie Oliver despairs.
That goes for many of us too. The silent majority.
There are (I think) over 40 countries comprised of Asia.
Sri Lankans didn't do it...Philipinos weren't involved...no Japanese to our knowledge....
It sickens me to be honest how we pussy foot around.
I wish the media would call it for what it is and stop using euphemisms such as ‘grooming’ and ‘Asian gangs’.
This was child rape.
By Pakistanis.-
Why didn't they just leave him in prison to serve his full sentence, no person convicted of rape, murder or terror related etc should be let out of prison early. Why not just release white collar related criminals ie fraud etc who are not a danger to the general public.
Then that country, Pakistan, can have visa applications of those wishing to come here revoked, I imagine that's pretty much a one way traffic. I believe I've read about Australia sending a criminal or two back here, having hardly lived in the UK.
The country has to agree to have him.
Unlikely to want him.
The letter of the law seems to be scrupulously observed in the cases of these sick individuals, what can or cannot be done in law is meticulously observed in the intent of showing the law to be robust, firm and unequivocal when applied to them, no stone going unturned to ensure the treatment of these child rapists is fair, just and carried out to the letter.
Where was this shining, scrupulous, robust justice system when the families of these children were begging the law to take action to prevent their daughters being trafficked and abused? When the children themselves were reporting these horrific crimes and ignored, told to go away and, mind blowingly unbelievable in some cases, returned to the perpetrators so the crimes of abuse could continue unabated? When the mighty power of the law was used against them.
I guess they were only worthless kids, random young wrong 'uns, tiresome repeat nuisances not worth the bother.
Has been automatic for about 10 years now and the Conservative Party extended this eligibility in Police Crime and Court Sentencing Act 2022.

Pakistan seems to have legal grounds for refusing to take this man, so the alternative is to keep him in prison until a country can be found to accept him, very unlikely it would seem.
I cannot understand why he is being released early when he is clearly such a risk to the community; six years at least left to serve depending on the length of his sentence.
Is there any explanation for this?
What I understand is that he’s now served two thirds of his sentence and so release is automatic. Earlier he applied for parole at least twice I think but was deemed not fit. I don’t understand why after two thirds it’s automatic release on licence

See prisoners advice service on line for explanation, rules and laws on fixed term sentences.
For sex offenders it’s usual to serve half sentence term in prison and the other half on licence. He’s served more than the average before being released on licence…

Indeed, LemonJam. I have barristers in my family, and they have spoken of being given briefs that they would have preferred not to take.
This would be all well and good but it was known as far back as 2013 that he could not be deported so why all the hoohaa and head scratching and what do we do with him now nonsense?
He was released with the Government knowing this is the case. Totally cynical, placatory, false hand wringing BS.
I agree he's not "free"- he's served 14 years of a 21 years sentence and now released on licence, ie under restrictions.
He is in 24 hour staffed accommodation, wearing an electronically monitored tag. Any breach of license conditions sends him straight back to prison.
The government is looking at ways to deport him back to Pakistan which as far as I can tell all posters agree and support the government's efforts.

In terms of sex offenders, breaching conditions can at times mean damage to women and children, so it isnt that reassuring.
I didn't say it was 'reassuring', I just said he wasn't 'free'.
I don't like the fact that it appears he can't be deported any more than anyone else does. But he won't be free to disappear without trace.
You have way more faith in the process than me MaizieD the process that's let down those children time & time & time again.
If justice were to be truly served he should be at the bottom of a very deep oubliette, perhaps he would understand a punishment as mediaeval as his mindset.
Yes i have always said Begum is our responsibility.
I've thought for a long time Shamima Begum should be allowed to return she was 15 at the time, and like many mid teens, impeded by lack of judgement in making a foolish decision in the naivety of youth. Expert opinions suggest the teenage brain isn't fully wired. She was also quite possibly groomed on line.
As for this Jabba the Hutt lookalike, I really don't accept he's this country's responsibility. He carried out his wicked attacks against those children as a fully formed adult. For such appalling behaviour he shouldn't be allowed to stay here and Pakistan should take him back he belongs there. I think Andy Burnham would garner a lot of support to that end. We've already heard that one of the women are terrified that she may encounter him. The women are the victims and what they want and feel should be paramount.
