Andy Burnham would like to see him deported, I think it would be a real coup if he could somehow find a way to reverse the legislation that would allow this appalling man, the grooming gang leader, convicted of 30 rapes to remain here. Although I don't hold out too many hopes on that happening, any thoughts on the matter.

You're- not sure

Primrose, barristers ( if that is who you mean in your post) do not "queue up to act" for anyone. The system is the opposite: the individual seeks the services of a barrister via the clerk of their chambers, who allocates cases depending on the availability of each advocate.

Thank you for your apology regarding my use of the term “lawyers” etc. 😉

sure right Chocolatelovinggran- only barristers can act and speak on behalf of client's in court.

I also agree barristers can't queue up to act for anyone it's not possible or permitted. That's because The Bar Standards Board, BSB established the Cab Rank Rule so that a self employed barrister must accept any brief or instructions from a client to appear in court. The request can come into a chambers as you describe and if so the chambers clerk distributes cases to whichever barrister is available to take the case at the time. All barristers therefore always have cases allocated to them and must be take a case even if they don't not want it

Thats because the BSB stipulates a barrister can not refuse to take a case based on the client's identity , the nature of the case or any personal opinions they hold about the client's character or cause

He's walking around free.

Not exactly 'free' Nannee

A spokeswoman for the Home Office said:

"On his release he will be on the sex offenders' register for life, ordered to stay away from his victims and banned from contacting any child or young person.

"As well as facing strict curfews and restriction zones, his every movement will be tracked, forced to wear an electronic tag. Should he breach his conditions, he will be immediately locked up."

Apparently, he relinquished his Pakistani citizenship years ago.

I do think that after 55 years in the UK, and as a British citizen, he is our responsibility. If he isn’t, then surely Shamima Begum is? I totally understand the need for this man to serve his full sentence, but not why somebody who has left Pakistan 55 years ago and is no longer their citizen becomes the responsibility of Pakistan,

I must have been mistaken earlier. I understood that he had been a dual national and still had Pakistan citizenship.

Yes, TerriBull the suspension of all visas from Pakistan was a suggestion on GMB.

TerriBull Fri 03-Jul-26 09:18:18

Presently he's stateless, Pakistan is the country he was a citizen of. I'm sure some pressure could be put on Pakistan to accept him back if they want the UK to grant visas to their citizens wishing to come here. I imagine that traffic of people is pretty one way. As such they should be prepared to take back their criminals, most countries operate some sort of quid pro quo on situations that don't present as clear cut.

Nannee49 Fri 03-Jul-26 09:18:01

The voice of reason as usual Oreo the amazing Maggie Oliver has just been on GMB saying the same thing - where there's a will there's a way. It has to be found.

Chocolatelovinggran Fri 03-Jul-26 08:40:42

Understood - he is, effectively, stateless.

TheatreLover Fri 03-Jul-26 08:17:58

Unfortunately, it seems Pakistan won't accept Shabir Ahmed into their country as he is not a Pakistani citizen.

Apparently there is a 50+ year old law which prevents his deportation, something to do with commonwealth countries.

I heard the government are looking into ways to circumvent this and therefore deport him PDQ

Should be doable, these laws weren’t handed down on stone tablets.
Governments make laws and Governments can repeal laws, particularly for crims.

Utter scum. Deport him as he is no longer a British citizen and send the other filth with him.

LemonJam Thu 02-Jul-26 19:01:29

Sago

He has served 14 years of a 41 sentence.

Imagine being one of his victims seeing him enjoying his liberty.

His sentence was not 41 years- it was 22 years - see BBC link 17.07

TerriBull Thu 02-Jul-26 18:40:35

I can't believe what I'm reading up thread, such appalling depravity committed against children. The rot was so so deep. We're shackled by principles that many of the perpertrators from whence they came do not share.

TerriBull Thu 02-Jul-26 18:28:22

Well we were told that a lot of dangerous criminals were only going to serve a fraction of their sentence, presumably he was one of those.

MT62 Thu 02-Jul-26 18:19:29

They did things to those girls that I never even thought possible 😩
Yes deport, deport 👍🏻

Nannee49 Thu 02-Jul-26 18:13:33

For the life of me I simply cannot get my head around a Godforsaken so called justice system that allows this depraved pervert freedom. Questions around his deportation would be totally moot if he was still in jail serving out 41 years for his vile part in grooming gangs.

Have people not read or heard or do they simply not care what horrors these children suffered? Shipped round the country in the back of vans locked in dog crates to be raped at will by stomach churning men; stomach churning evil entitled men who stood around grinning, laughing, betting on whether the dog they set upon one child would rape her anally or vaginally!!!

It is horror beyond belief, it was going on then, it's going on now.

He's walking around free.

God help us.

eazybee Thu 02-Jul-26 17:59:02

I cannot understand why this man is being released early. I knew he had more years to serve but had no idea his sentence was 41 years. Is that really so? Apparently his victim/s were not informed of his release.
I wonder which Human Rights lawyer has been angling for his release?

Fallingstar Thu 02-Jul-26 17:52:06

Galaxy

There is zero chance he will not repeat offend.

So true, am afraid sex offenders are the most likely to offend again. As I said earlier is a compulsion.

Galaxy Thu 02-Jul-26 17:46:47

Fallingstar Thu 02-Jul-26 17:14:16

14 years served of a 41 year sentence, whilst his victims will live with the psychological scars for a lifetime.
The law is an ass.

MaizieD Thu 02-Jul-26 17:13:40

Chocolatelovinggran

My understanding was that those convicted of a serious crime can be deported on their release from prison.

As I understand it, although he was stripped of his British citizenship he still holds Pakistani citizenship and, as Pakistan is a Commonwealth Country, according to this ols law he cannot be deported because of the Commonwealth membership. The government can't amend the legislation retrospectively.

I believe that they are exploring ways to get round this.

Lawyers will be queuing up to act for him and you can bet your life he will not be deported.

Why are the anti-immigrant people so ignorant of how the law works. Barristers can't turn down cases, they have to take them on the cab rank rule if they are offered them. I doubt if they get much money for this, either.

At the moment Ahmed has no reason to go to law as he isn't being deported.

Having said that, I think that releasing him before he has served even half his sentence is appalling.
