Trump's war - Iran to bomb Fairford UK?

Well, US planes operate from Fairford into the Middle East. Now Iran has threatened the UK base.

Our response has been that we will defend ourselves: fair enough.

But personally, I think we should ban the US from our bases.
Trump has forced this on us. He has crossed a red line as far as I am concerned.

On BBC 10pm news, its not up in detail in an article I can find yet.

Maremia Thu 23-Jul-26 22:11:57

Oh no. Do they have the range?

Wyllow3 Thu 23-Jul-26 22:16:32

Ah, here's the article

www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c1w1e2542wno

please do read, too long to summarise.

I think the short answer is that Iran could damage British interests elsewhere as punitive measures

Trying to drag us into a war we never chose.

Trump is setting up a zero sum situation. There are no winners as such.

We live half an hour away from Fairford and often hear the US planes going overhead.

Exactly this. He should not be involving unwilling countries in his wars, but by using bases here, he is involving the UK. Andy Burnham should tell Trump to take his bombers back to the US and keep us out of it.

I agree that the UK should stop allowing the US to use UK bases to bomb Iran, it doesn’t only mean that Iran will see us as a legitimate target in the war, but it means terrorists sympathetic with Iran could target the UK.
Let the US deal with the repercussions of their illegal wars, and leave us out of it.

Despite Sir Keir Starmer's best efforts to distance our country into Trump's illegal war it looks like we are now in Iran's sights.

BBC News said that the agreement with the US to allow them air bases here is that their bombers should only be deployed for defensive action and not offensive.

Let's see what our new Foreign Secretary, Ed Miliband, will do about this. Can't say I am filled with optimism.

We don’t give in to the crazy regime in Iran, no country should.
We step up security. Iran will try and use the deranged fanatics who live here ( they can’t actually bomb us btw) from Iran.
They also won’t want to provoke us to attack them, so if they do anything it will be to get their British jihadis to break into the base. They won’t last long if they try it.

Maremia Fri 24-Jul-26 09:03:19

Trump has dragged us into this illegal war, and now he can't get out of it.

AGAA4 Fri 24-Jul-26 09:33:17

The UK have proscribed the IRGC now so any members of the terrorist organisation here will be watched closely.
I would also prefer the US to leave the UK especially after the way
Trump spoke about us not helping him in his illegal war and claimed NATO didn't fulfil it's obligations.
He still doesn't understand how NATO works.
I doubt we would get much help from the US if Iran did attack.

Wyllow3 Fri 24-Jul-26 09:41:33

As I said above, in my opinion it is most likely to be attacks on our interested or links/close allies abroad. Diego Garcia is within reach as we already know (missiles were intercepted en route).

Although if you view this map in the mirror it could reach SW UK - just. Includes mainland Europe, where we take part in joint NATO bases. biggest UK interests in Germany and Italy) That is a concern for NATO

We do have big bases in Cyprus, (Akrotiri and Dhekelia) and they are well within range (well under 2000km)

www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/chilling-map-shows-irans-missiles-36908925

But this war is also a series of gambits or threats. So that indicates need for good defensive capability plus - stop the US using our home bases.

Oreo, Mr Trump seems happy to make deals with Saudi Arabia.
Are you of the opinion that a country that drives aeroplanes into towers, and beheads journalists is not a " crazy regime"?
I think they are both despicable nations with a terrible record in human rights.
Mr Trump has decided that one is worthy of a nuclear deal, and one should be " bombed into extinction" ( I hope that I'm not misquoting him)

Maremia Fri 24-Jul-26 10:06:36

Absolutely so, Chocolatelovinggran.

Maremia Fri 24-Jul-26 10:07:45

And, the US had a 'nuclear' deal with Iran, before Trump tore it up.

Saudi Arabia didn’t fly planes into the twin towers, terrorists did.
We have home grown terrorists here too, as does just about every country in the world.
Don’t confuse two different things.
Various countries in the world have bad human rights records, as a country we can only be concerned about other countries that threaten us. Like Iran.

Oreo Fri 24-Jul-26 10:22:39

Maremia

Yeah right! A deal that Iran more or less ignored which is the reason we are where we are right now.

Oreo Fri 24-Jul-26 10:24:18

Appeasement never works btw.

eazybee Fri 24-Jul-26 11:02:14

Well, they know we are a soft target, thanks to our lack of support for NATO.

Maremia Fri 24-Jul-26 11:15:19

Yeah right! There was a deal already.
Trump didn't tear it up because it wasn't working. Trump tore it up because Obama made the deal.

Maremia Fri 24-Jul-26 11:18:30

Also, it wasn't 'terrorists' who ordered the beheading of Jamal Khashoggi in the Turkish Embassy.

Fallingstar Fri 24-Jul-26 11:36:14

Am wondering how Burnham will handle Trump, I thought Starmer was excellent. And now Trump is threatening 12.5% tarriffs on allies. With an ally like him who needs enemies.

Fallingstar Fri 24-Jul-26 11:38:20

His understanding of tariffs is similar to his understanding of NATO or the word ‘ally’. Lamentable.

Wyllow3 Fri 24-Jul-26 12:03:14

Well, I think it's important to focus on the big picture here, ie the interplay of countries and forces and weaponry and in which ways its needful for our own government to act.

As for Trump and tariffs, yes I see he has entered on a new round playing yet more power games. 🙄🤷‍♂️

Whitewavemark2 Fri 24-Jul-26 13:03:13

So Trump is threatening to commit yet more war crimes, by bombing targets in Iran.

The question is whether the U.K. is willing to be complicit in these crimes by allowing the USA air force to take off on these war crime missions from British soil.
