Another attempt by Trump to end the war with Iran

Trump is urging other countries to impose sanctions on Iran.
The problem is most of Iran's trade is with China who have called the sanctions illegal and will not be complying.
Iran say they have been waiting for this from Trump and are well prepared.
It will depend on other countries complying. China have said no. No reply yet from India or Russia.

Maybe they'll just hit one another.

Lots of bad tempered, frustrated old gimmers waving their walking sticks at each other and not caring who gets in the way.

Former British military attaché to Russia, John Foreman, has said the the US would not have sent such a high ranking official to Russia at short notice unless something is up.

Allegedly, the CIA man only lasted 8 hours in Moscow, instead of the expected couple of days.
Allegedly, Ukraine was asked to not drone attack Moscow until after Thursday.

BBC reporting that the cIA visit to Russia, is to warn Russia not to continue with their plan to attack the Baltics with a hybrid army (soldiers dont wear Rusxian uniform).
It means that NATO would be involved.

Blimey

Sheesh we’ve got a right old lot leading the powerful countries at the moment. We just have to grin and bear it, it seems.

Smileless2012 Wed 26-Aug-26 11:55:20

As does Netanyahu but maybe with less nodding.

AGAA4 Wed 26-Aug-26 11:13:23

Putin nods along with Trump and then does exactly as he wants as we've seen before.

Now Vance has openly insulted Carney resulting in the Canadian diplomats packing up and leaving the talks on tariffs.
I heard someone say that between them Trump Vance and Hegseth may have half a brain. Believable?

I would dispute that they even have that much brainpower.
Well done the diplomats for exiting. Trump et al just don’t understand the word diplomacy.

Trump is now desperate to get a positive outcome for anything before the mid term elections. Iran has proved very intransigeant and unlikely to change quickly. He turned his attention to Russia to try to get some progress on Ukraine, his usual tactic is carrot and stick but Russia has absorbed all sanctions and damage and is on a war footing supported by N Korea, Iran, China and others.
Just what Carrots are on offer and how much Stick is threatened is hard to tell but Putin is a hard negotiator

I misread the title as ‘to end the world ‘ not the ‘war’. Maybe a Freudian slip ? Weapon happy countries opposing one another will not end well.

T'was ever thus, OldFrill The trouble is, historically, the West has had its paws on the area for a very long time in various negative ways, and people are fed up of it and feel they have the right to defend their own nation.

Remember the West meddled and forced a regime change in the last century that went disastrously wrong.

Problem there is of course its ended up by arming to the teeth.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 26-Aug-26 08:54:16

The only thing I can find which has been confirmed is that Ratcliffe (CIA) did not meet Putin, but members of the KGB.

A good guess might be that Ukraine was on the table, or Iran, but at initial stages, not actual peace talks.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 26-Aug-26 08:49:23

Trump is now annoying China.

Anyone heard anything about the CIA Moscow visit?

OldFrill Wed 26-Aug-26 08:25:51

I don't read any suggestions that the regime "live rich lives off the back of the people", but the regime's concentration on producing, procuring and stockpiling weapons comes before the welfare of their people. I suspect the revolutionary guard are not short of nourishment.

The sanctions already imposed on Iran for a very long time have caused terrible hardship for the innocent people who live there. Already they are struggling and have heard many don’t have enough to eat so what further damage does the US wish to impose. The regime will have plenty of money and supplies squirreled away but the innocent people will bear the brunt of this.

He's just done one of the most stupid things so far. Antagonising the Chinese.

My Iranian friend whose sis lives in Tehran says they have plenty of weapons squirrelled away but not food stocks or goods.
There is real, genuine suffering, terrible inflation, and it is the sanctions from outside the country is large and produce quite a lot of its own food - but there are limits.

Again, does it "warm" hearts and minds towards "rescue" from the West? Yes, many want more democratic rights and freedom forth constraints from the revolutionary guard (which are uneven, depending where you live)

But they have stopped hoping Trump will deliver that a while back.

The regime don't actually live rich lives off the back of the people nor the revolutionary guard who are the "police". Their commitment to power is ideological and they have been building up arms for 49 years to prepare for just this sort of event.

Why is the head of the CIA in Russia.? The US aren't explaining.

Quite extraordinary though.

There seems to be loads of theories, so difficult to know at the moment.

He only gets to know what Natalie prints out for him.
Who is really in control?

Whitewavemark2 Tue 25-Aug-26 18:18:01

All the world needs to do is to ignore him.

Remember the Gulf of Mexico being re-named the Gulf of America.

That came to nothing.

Smileless2012 Tue 25-Aug-26 18:09:23

Maybe we should just be grateful he doesn't want to rename it Lake Trump.

foxie48 Tue 25-Aug-26 18:03:39

Trump is now threatening to rename Lake Ontario, "Lake America"! OMG he is just the pettiest of men, how on earth did he become POTUS, he really is an absolute joke (but with his finger on the nuclear button). His approval rating continues to slip, so many of those who voted him in for a second term are regretting their decision. Roll on the mid terms!
