Utilities

Burnham has long been an advocate of re-nationalising energy providers as well as water.

In order to ease the way in taking control of water, the law on insolvency needs to change in order to make it as easy as possible for the government place them into special administration and then control.

Not sure yet anbout energy companies. I reckon that will be years down the line, but I’m sure there must be a way to limit their mind losing profits. - tax ?

Election reform.

Burnham has long been an advocate of electoral reform. I think that back benchers will hold his feet against the fire on this one. Expect to see a row some time during conference.

Mind blowing profits!

We are also going to be told to stock up on food and be prepared for emergencies. The government is issuing advice apparently.

Just hope this doesn’t lead to panic buying. I think the best way is to just add a couple of items to your weekly shop.

Also get a grab bag ready - not sure what to put in it. Passports I guess.

With regard to the, predictably disastrous, results of denationalising the utilities, including water, we have Thatcher's Conservative government to thank for that. Yet another fine mess they got us into. Which, it has to be said, Tony Blair did nothing to remedy as indeed he added to said mess.

I completely agree. Selling off our utilises was a disgrace.

Love the quote, but don’t think it applies to AB! But can think of few men to whom it would apply grin

Methinks this is known to all, I think the question is specifically aimed at the “why” iro AB?

Fallingstar Wed 26-Aug-26 16:31:35

I wish Burnham well with this. Renationalising our utilities would be amazing. Fraught with difficulties and very time consuming but would be to the betterment of the nation. And let’s not forget railways. Surely that could be the easiest move to start with.

Renationalising the utilities other than possibly water, that's just not going ro happen.
I feel a bit more hopeful about electoral reform. This antiquated FPTP system is not fit for purpose, particularly with the factional electorate we now have. I can't believe that the population of this country is too stupid to understand a form of proportional representation. The Scots have taken it on board.
And obviously the House of Lords has got to be reformed too. For a start, peers should reach the end of their term at age 75. And there should eventually be a cap on their number. Why should we go on paying clapped-out politicians for the rest of their lives?

Oh goodness. The very mention of stocking up will get the usual idiots rushing for loo rolls and water at the very least. I hope if and when the time comes shops and supermarkets impose a limit on how much one shopper can buy.
During the war (credits to Uncle Albert) my Granny in Bramhall would sleep in the Morrison shelter with a small suitcase full of birth certificates, health documents and insurance policies. Perhaps we will have to do that.

The railways has started. Water privatisation an absolute disaster . I agree Blair did nothing about it, or the sale of council housing to private landlords.
I wonder whether history will judge thatcher Guilty as many of us do

MollyNew Wed 26-Aug-26 17:26:24

I seem to recall that when AB arrived at parliament to be sworn in as MP for Makerfield, a Tory MP shouted "he's not the Messiah!" and he replied "naughty boy".

All sounds a bit Dad’s Army….’doomed! We’re all doomed I tell ye’😁
Where are you getting all this from?
A grab bag is useful only for a hospital trip.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 26-Aug-26 17:59:58

From the. Government - take it up with them.

According to the FT's daily email:

Andy Burnham is looking at allowing English mayors to suspend Margaret Thatcher’s totemic “right to buy” policy for council homes, as the UK prime minister seeks to assert more public control over housing.

This is in addition to restrictions already put in place under Starmer; tenants have to have lived in the house for 10 years before they can buy it' a smaller discount on market price is in place and new council housing has to have been let by the council for 35 years before it can be offered for sale.

Right to buy was another disastrous Thatcher policy which has left potential tenants at the mercy of private landlords charging higher rents (part of which the state is having to pay out as housing benefit) and has not allowed councils to fully replace their stock of social housing.

Iam64 Wed 26-Aug-26 18:55:17

It was one of those moments when we knew we had a different leader of the Labour Party. He’s not the Messiah said a grumpy Conservative, no responder Andy, he’s a very naughty boy.

Thanks for this MaizieD, I’d missed the news. I completely agree with yiu about Thatcher’s policy. Just so wrong on every level
I’ve seen drug dealers finally evicted by the council, only to see them return to the area, with housing benefit paying a private landlord more than it did to the council

This plan is welcome

I am disappointed that Burnham has withdrawn his support for the cap on political donations.

Billionaires must be stopped from buying their way into our politics.
