Neither the Conservative Party or the Labour Party over the past 2 years has broken maritime laws by interfering directly with laden dinghies carrying asylum seekers. the Labour Party efforts over the past 2 years have cut crossing numbers by around 50% so managing progress in a lawful way.

Reform UK's Operation Fortress failed to mention maritime law and international asylum seeker laws. It appears Farage and his party may be willing to break these laws in order to implant Operation Fortress?

As was clear last night on Channel 4 they do not believe they must adhere to electoral law- so why stop there?

Perhaps 'another party ' intends to not follow laws?
Acceptable?

Operational protocols allow French police to intervene in shallow waters and target vessels or equipment leaving their shores with asylum seekers seeking to claim asylum in the UK. For example, the French police are legally allowed to try to deflate or seize an unladen boat before or during launch.

Direct intervention on a crowded vessel already into the sea, out of shallow water, carries high safety risks and legally limits the ability of the French police to carry out any active physical interventions . They are contravened by both bi lateral agreements and maritime and border security law.

Once the boats are launched the French authorities can then inform UK Border Control a laden vessel is on the way. UK Border control, in their larger boats can board a vessel once a laden vessel is in UK waters if it is deemed safe to do and complies with maritime law as deemed a safe thing to do.

However even it is possible to board a laden dinghy at (how would it be possible to board a laden dinghy?) anyone on the laden dinghy who then declares their intention to claim asylum in the UK is protected under international law and domestic frameworks and can not be punished or pushed back without an individual assessment of their asylum claim. Impossible to make that claim on a dinghy for obvious reasons so they must legally be allowed to safely land on UK soil to make their claim asylum claim.

Not sure how any other party would be able to change international laws or international maritime laws?

"The smuggler gangs seem totally in control."

Yes. Organised crime rules.

You said it calendar girl!

The sight of that mega dinghy going back and forth collecting asylum seekers, with coastguards and police standing around, unable to do anything, just takes the biscuit.

Why can they not be punctured in shallow water, making them unusable?

The smuggler gangs seem totally in control.

And you wonder why the public have no patience with it all!

The AS traffickers will act to protect their business and prepared to attack aggressively to do so- it's a dangerous situation for such reporters.

The French and British police, work individually in their own countries and co-operatively and both try and capture the AS traffickers where possible. There are 350 miles of French coastline to the Channel- so not an easy task. There are reported cases of prosecution of traffickers caught and captured on both sides of the Channel.

Yes, it happened near Calais, at a migrant camp.

The police in Calais are surely aware of what is going on.

I hope that person who caused injury to the tv photographer while he was taking photos of illegal immigrations will be sent back very quickly having such a temper. I cannot understand why they say they will find work when they should realise it would be illegal to work in the uk.

Who should be "sent back", and where to?

It happened in France.

The injury was by a smuggler, not an asylum seeker.

Asylum seekers don't apply for " a visa".

Some of them can work.

From Gov.uk

"The Home Office may grant permission to work to asylum seekers whose claim has been outstanding for more than 12 months through no fault of their own. Under this policy, those who are granted permission to work and have submitted an application on or before 26 March 2026 are restricted to jobs on the Immigration Salary List published by the Home Office. Any applications submitted on or after 26 March 2026, who are granted, are restricted to jobs on the Appendix Skilled Occupations at RQF level 6 or above. Any permission to work granted will come to an end if their claim is refused and any appeals rights are exhausted because at that point, they are expected to leave the UK."

Successful refugees who are granted Indefinite Leave to Remain in UK, then have unrestricted access to the labour market.

The cameraman needed stitches in a cut near his eye.
It was not just one, it was a gang and the BBC crew was chased away by the smugglers.

Did the French police arrest the smugglers?

Aveline Fri 04-Sept-26 11:23:39

Neither should be accepted into UK

Even the DM says it was the smugglers and not illegal migrants who were throwing stones at the BBC broadcast crew.

PamelaJ1 Fri 04-Sept-26 09:31:30

I think it was one of the smuggling gang, not one of the immigrants but I may be mistaken?
