Reform given huge donations by crypto currency billionaires

Am sure most of you will have heard of Reform’s windfall.
Personally I am disturbed by this, not because of such large donations, but because of the monetarising of politics, as in the US, with both billionaires who donated so generously perhaps believing they now have the right to influence Farage et al with regard to policy.
Also Delo, one of the billionaires was charged with money laundering in the US only to be pardoned by Trump. To me that doesn’t sit well. Certainly crypto currencies are used for money laundering and for nefarious reasons by the likes of Putin and the Iranian Regime.
Not sure what other Grans make of this.

The first poll is out. A very clear majority are in favour of a cap.

Do people not read any facts?

The independent Rycroft Review on countering foreign financial influence and interference in UK politics was commissioned in December 2025 and published on 25 March 2026. Steve Reed announced the changes in Parliament on 26 March 2026.

Had Farage and his MPs not staged a petulant HoC walk out 20 minutes before they would have heard it.

The Labour Party receives union donations in total averaging £10 million year. That’s from millions of workers who have agreed that a portion of their dues can be used in this way. The money comes in in dribs and drabs, £20K here, £5K there … not in a block of £36 million from one man - enough to cover the permissible party expenses for an entire General Election.

I don’t know whether it’s ignorance or vitriol that motivates some.

I’ve written about his before. Peerages are not just handed out to mates. That’s in the past. It’s what Johnson did. Nobody has ever discovered why he appointed Charlotte Owen.

Labour changed the procedure. Someone has to be nominated with a clear citation explaining how their knowledge, skills and experience would add to the House of Lords.

All party nominations are then considered by the House of Lords Appointment Committee (HOLAC). That’s an independent, advisory, non-departmental public body.

lordsappointments.independent.gov.uk/commissionerbiographies

HOLAC can also make cross bench appointments.

Two new peers took their seats today.

Lord Leveson - Investigatory Powers Commissioner. Cross bench appointment.

Lord McTague - Former National Chair of the Federation of Small Businesses. Labour appointment.

People who have made a valuable contribution to public life.

Oh Graphite, why do you always ruin things with silly things like proven facts?

It depends who you are.....

And what does that mean?

I think the problem is that those who oppose Labour or support Reform will try to find a way to twist the facts to suit their own agenda, but thankfully it seems the majority are in favour of a cap, and there is no conspiracy against Reform here, rather it is undemocratic to have so much money donated by unknown donors whose aim could be to influence politics and dictate policy.

Margs

Think back to Trump's second inauguration. All the people clustered closely around him were the likes of Musk, Bezos, Zuckerberg, etc, etc.

The biggest money people on the planet. What does that say about American politics? And it looks like the UK will go the same way, inevitably.

It's not inevitable but everyone who can see through the Reform fairy-tales & commonsense image to the self-interest & ruthlessness beneath, needs to find some way of voting in the next GE - don't let apathy lead us down the same path as the US.
Personally I'd be shocked if Reform were ever able to form a government.

And you really think the trade unions haven't been doing that for years?

Graphite Mon 14-Sept-26 19:07:41

This isn’t just about Reform although their behaviour has created urgency.

Listen to Baroness Hodge in the Lords today at 16:51. She speaks about Elon Musk and a possible very large donation to Restore and a particular case involving the Tories and an impermissible donation from Mohamed Amersi.

… Hodge wrote to the Electoral Commission and the Met calling for an investigation into questions related to a £200,000 political donation that Amersi’s long-term partner, Nadia Rodicheva, made to the Conservative party in 2017.

A book by Tom Burgis reported that the donation was initially going to come from Amersi himself. However, at that time he was deemed an “impermissible donor” because he was not on the electoral roll. Correspondence shows Tory party officials suggesting to Amersi that the donation should instead “please come from Nadia’s account”.

Trade Unions have been supporting their working members for years- that's literally is their day job and reason for TU existence. TUs key purpose is to support and represent the interests of the ordinary working person and their 1000s of members ! Difficult to argue with that- hardly self interest as suggested 🤷‍♀️

LemonJam Mon 14-Sept-26 19:19:56

Laws require trade unions to hold direct, secret ballots of all their many 1000s of members to elect top positions like the ir chosen TU General Secretary and national Executive members- all very transparent and democratic.

A cap now is shutting the door after the horse has bolted, Im not sure how any cap would be calculated.
£72 million is a ridiculous amount there needs to be rules on how it is spent, maybe a fixed sum per candidate that would at least give some restriction. Parties shouldn't be able to buy an election.

Thanks for that David was looking for that exact statement ‘parties shouldn’t be able to buy an election’.
Sums it up nicely.

Oh dear…

Trade Unions lost their “power base” in Blair’s day.

These days, not every Trade Union even pays or donates to the Labour Party, and those that do ballot their members, who have a choice when signing up, about whether they actually want a proportion of their “subs” paid to the Labour Party, and as explained many many times previously, it’s not even remotely similar to one billionaire donating £36m.

I was a Union Rep in two jobs. One public sector, the other a very large bank.

Sadly, Trade Unions are still very required. I’ve taken advice via a Trade Union in two job roles too, and was very glad to do so.

Honestly, I cant recall bow many times I have explained exactly what you just have in N and P, Cossy.

And the L Party have in election times.

For years.

Could I suggest GN's who come in regularly to N and P actually look it up before making the assertion yet again when it has been the case for years.

Of course, not mentioned in parts of the Press, who go on about the unions, but still.

It was brought in 2016 by the Conservative Party, was really really hot news at the time, and several elections have gone by since then. We have fundraising in the L Party to keep going at local and national level.

Menopauselbitch Tue 15-Sept-26 09:18:45

What about Labour taking huge donations from the unions and big pharma companies or must we mention this.

Menopauselbitch Tue 15-Sept-26 09:21:07

So because the give Labour massive donations they don’t want anything in return? I world for the TR’s for 8 years they are power mad.

Maremia Tue 15-Sept-26 11:21:37

Just to clarify,
Trade Union donations come from people who live, work and pay taxes in the UK
Foreign billionaires do not live, work or pay taxes in tbe UK.
Simple.
