Reform given huge donations by crypto currency billionaires

Am sure most of you will have heard of Reform’s windfall.
Personally I am disturbed by this, not because of such large donations, but because of the monetarising of politics, as in the US, with both billionaires who donated so generously perhaps believing they now have the right to influence Farage et al with regard to policy.
Also Delo, one of the billionaires was charged with money laundering in the US only to be pardoned by Trump. To me that doesn’t sit well. Certainly crypto currencies are used for money laundering and for nefarious reasons by the likes of Putin and the Iranian Regime.
Not sure what other Grans make of this.

Still influence.

Still influence.

Not foreign influence though from just a few billionaires who want to bring crypto hubs to the UK.

Are you suggesting, fancythat, that all donations should be banned?

I have thought for years that parties should be state funded. Only allowed to keep membership fees.

Here here.

I dont know why it isnt done like that.

Facebook, yes, I know, is showing lots of posts about a crypto policy that Farage promoted at an event in tbe USA, which demonstrates why he has received these donations from crypto billionaire's

Theresa May, in the House of Lords, giving an eloquent speech suggesting that the anti crypto donations proposals go further.

Theresa May wants crypto currency and bitcoin banned in the UK as it is used to hide criminal activity.

Well at least you know about this money. Whether you like it or not is a different matter.

Unlike some of the other parties who having been taking back handers for years through lobbying and cash for questions. And grace and favour set ups, nice expenses, snouts in the trough and endless jolly's.

Before calling out any other party.
Labour should take a long look at themselves. Loads of money from the Unions and Coop for years?

Yes, a good clear speech. Here at 16:47 if anyone else wants to watch:

(I like her specs too!)

In other news. Dan Thomas, Leader of Reform in Wales has stood down after some matter with the police. He will remain as a member of the Senedd.

All declared.

I’d be in favour of all parties being state funded. But, finances aside, how would the state work out how much to pay each part, ie the algorithm for working out payments;

All get the same?
Based on official membership figures?
Based on something else?

"I’d be in favour of all parties being state funded. But, finances aside, how would the state work out how much to pay each part, ie the algorithm for working out payments;"

How would you cope with the Monster Raving Loony party or Bin Man a much higher threshold will be needed for candidates to be allowed to contest a seat, the days of comedy candidates has to end.

Maremia Tue 15-Sept-26 18:24:49

'Comedy candidates'?
Did you mean those short stay Reform candidates who didn't have a clue about how to conduct a formal meeting?

Why? Why do they have to end? It’s called democracy!

Since 2020, Labour has received almost £43m from trade unions, who raise their money through individual workers' membership fees.

This works out, on average, to approx £2 a month from every Union member, who are given the choice of whether their subs should be used to make a contribution to Labour Party Funds.

£43,000,000 in 6 years from literally thousands and thousands of contributors.

Not £76,000,000 within 2 days from two individuals, who might not both pass the residency requirements and one of whom is a convicted felon.

🤷🏻‍♀️ Not quite the same!

Dan Thomas Reform's leader in Wales has been arrested for alleged assault and coercive behaviour.
He has since resigned.

He was a personal choice by Farage who as one journalist put it shows appalling judgement.

Can Reform get any worse.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Tue 15-Sept-26 19:38:09

Probably.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Tue 15-Sept-26 19:39:23

Even I’m beginning to wonder if Reform has peaked. 🤷‍♀️

If every candidate had an election money pot it would encourage even more loonies.
Democracy isnt a comedy show - or is it?

I put this on a different thread.
I think it should really be here:
