‘Signs of violence’: asylum seekers arriving in France injured after being deported from UK. Do Asylum seekers deserve to be kept safe from harm and injury on arrival in the UK?

Is the UK in danger of losing empathy for those seeking asylum whilst their claims are being processed? French health service documents injuries including fractures and bruising after detention and return under ‘one in one out’ scheme
.
The pilot scheme involves one asylum seeker who crosses the Channel in a small boat being returned to France in return for another in northern France being legally brought to the UK to claim asylum. The scheme is due to end on 1 October.
Samusocial de Paris (SSP) has been commissioned by Île-de-France’s regional health agency to provide healthcare for asylum seekers returned to France in the first eight days after their deportation from the UK, when they are accommodated in a shelter in Paris.

They have documented the cases of 90 returnees between 22 January and 7 June 2026. All are young men, mostly in their 20s and early-30s, who sought sanctuary in the UK after fleeing a variety of conflict zones including Eritrea, Sudan and Afghanistan. About 1,400 people have been forcibly removed to France by the Home Office since the scheme began in August 2025.

The evidence compiled by SSP has been submitted to the French Assembly’s cross-party inquiry into the impact of the Anglo-French border deals known as Le Touquet agreements. This evidence comes from their own clinical consultations with returnees and some hospital reports from those sent to A&E.

According to the report: “Consultations are revealing signs consistent with recent physical and psychological violence as well as the consequences of prolonged detention in conditions described as particularly degrading.” It states that the physical and psychological conditions documented are “explicitly linked to the implementation of the France-British agreement”.
The report adds: “The frequency and recurrence of the incidents reported by people transferred under the Franco-British agreement appear particularly worrying.”

SSP recommends that a mechanism should be established to collect information on allegations of mistreatment by the British authorities that can be sent to the UK. It also suggests reporting this issue to the French prosecutor under article 40 of the French code of criminal procedure.

Nihal Osman, a programme coordinator for Médecins Sans Frontières, which also provides health support for this group of returnees, said: “This one in one out agreement is a machine for psychological destruction. The deeply concerning physical injuries sustained whilst in detention in the United Kingdom, which we have documented among those deported, must be viewed in the light of a serious psychological deterioration.”

The UK Home Office and the company Mitie, which provides the guards for the asylum seekers, have been approached for comment.

The definition of an invasion (Cambridge Dictionary)
An invasion is an act where an armed force, a large group of people, or a harmful substance enters a place by force or in an unwanted, disruptive way.

Small numbers of migrants at a time, arriving in the UK from multiple different countries, and not working as a cohesive group but as individuals, and largely being corralled in one place does not constitute an invasion. It’s one of those trigger words, used to stir up the populace.

Small numbers? 🤣. Have you seen the size of the mega dinghies carrying 250 people at a time?

I believe this word was also used by the Spanish when thousands stormed the enclave. That was definitely an invasion.

Of course, all two or three of them so far, I believe. The people who arrive on them are part of a managed process when they arrive in the UK. It does not constitute an invasion. We have not seen large scale ungoverned arrivals in the UK.

I think you'll find there were complex and dark reasons for that influx of people

People are not a swarm of flies.

How you feel about this issue might depend on how you feel about normal decency?

We have witnessed over these past years thousands of young fit men of fighting age arriving on these shores, and we have no idea who they are. It has been publicly stated that highly undesirable individuals are included in these boat arrivals. If I had no future for my family I would do anything I could to get them to a better life in another country, but these are not families, and if conditions are so bad, why are these young men leaving women and children behind, and why are they travelling though many safe countries and then risking a channel crossing?

Maremia Tue 15-Sept-26 12:02:27

Yes, that is your concern, as expressed by others, but how should we treat them?

sundowngirl Tue 15-Sept-26 12:07:31

Exactly!! 👏👏👏👏

History is repeating itself. How many previous forces have actually invaded the UK? This is not that.

We should treat them as human beings, who are largely seeking a better life for themselves and their families. The small rogue element should not distract us from the need to help the majority do that. It does not have to be in this country, or in mainland Europe if we invest in helping them to develop their own nations. Unfortunately the same people who view them as invaders are the same ones who are reluctant to invest in overseas aid. What an attitude.

Of course they should be treated as human beings, that goes without saying but they cannot be allowed to stay here illegally. The numbers will just keep on coming and its impossible to sustain that. Its being realistic as opposed to idealistic.

Wonder how the vote is going in Piddington and how many residents will vote LibDem or Labour in future?

Thank you Meandrogrog, for that 'of course'.

The majority are illegally
invading the country and are not asylum seekers. I don't think that they should be treated badly but they should be returned to their safe countries. Its costing the UK money that they don't have to support this invasion of fit young men,

Just calling it an “invasion” is agressive, in my opinion.

You could say “influx of those arrives via the channel”, or groups of mainly men seeking asylum”

You literally have zero evidence that they are “invading”

It is an invasion and they are invading.

It is an invasion! If a swarm of insects fly into your home it’s an invasion. If a large crowd run on to a football it is a pitch invasion. Thousands of people entering a country over a short period of time is an invasion. No point choosing another word for the same thing just because someone finds it an offensive word.

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
No need at all to be 😇and mealy mouthed about what many of us in the UK feel to be an invasive and massive influx of people that there seems to be no way of stopping.

westendgirl Tue 15-Sept-26 13:33:56

Primrose, no way is it an invasion . I have never seen asylum seekers get of the boats running, chanting and waving sticks or even football scarves. I think the word invasion has a meaning of force or brutality

Oreo Tue 15-Sept-26 13:40:12

It’s just a word! Don’t get hung up on a word when you know the reality is a huge problem for the UK and the whole of Europe.

You took the words out of my mouth. it’s just a word that has been used for centuries.

'Do asylum seekers deserve to be kept safe from harm?' asks the OP.

How many asylum seekers have you actually seen getting off a boat, apart from the few shown on the news?

The Cambridge Dictionary also says that 'invasion' means:
2. Unwanted Crowds or Things
A large, annoying number of people or things flood an area.

Casdon Tue 15-Sept-26 16:59:59

There are no crowds. It is not a large number of people all at the same time. The migrants are managed from arrival, they do not invade anything. To repeat the fact, it is not an invasion.

No, it’s the definition of invasion.
