‘Signs of violence’: asylum seekers arriving in France injured after being deported from UK. Do Asylum seekers deserve to be kept safe from harm and injury on arrival in the UK?

Is the UK in danger of losing empathy for those seeking asylum whilst their claims are being processed? French health service documents injuries including fractures and bruising after detention and return under ‘one in one out’ scheme
.
The pilot scheme involves one asylum seeker who crosses the Channel in a small boat being returned to France in return for another in northern France being legally brought to the UK to claim asylum. The scheme is due to end on 1 October.
Samusocial de Paris (SSP) has been commissioned by Île-de-France’s regional health agency to provide healthcare for asylum seekers returned to France in the first eight days after their deportation from the UK, when they are accommodated in a shelter in Paris.

They have documented the cases of 90 returnees between 22 January and 7 June 2026. All are young men, mostly in their 20s and early-30s, who sought sanctuary in the UK after fleeing a variety of conflict zones including Eritrea, Sudan and Afghanistan. About 1,400 people have been forcibly removed to France by the Home Office since the scheme began in August 2025.

The evidence compiled by SSP has been submitted to the French Assembly’s cross-party inquiry into the impact of the Anglo-French border deals known as Le Touquet agreements. This evidence comes from their own clinical consultations with returnees and some hospital reports from those sent to A&E.

According to the report: “Consultations are revealing signs consistent with recent physical and psychological violence as well as the consequences of prolonged detention in conditions described as particularly degrading.” It states that the physical and psychological conditions documented are “explicitly linked to the implementation of the France-British agreement”.
The report adds: “The frequency and recurrence of the incidents reported by people transferred under the Franco-British agreement appear particularly worrying.”

SSP recommends that a mechanism should be established to collect information on allegations of mistreatment by the British authorities that can be sent to the UK. It also suggests reporting this issue to the French prosecutor under article 40 of the French code of criminal procedure.

Nihal Osman, a programme coordinator for Médecins Sans Frontières, which also provides health support for this group of returnees, said: “This one in one out agreement is a machine for psychological destruction. The deeply concerning physical injuries sustained whilst in detention in the United Kingdom, which we have documented among those deported, must be viewed in the light of a serious psychological deterioration.”

The UK Home Office and the company Mitie, which provides the guards for the asylum seekers, have been approached for comment.

No, it’s the definition of invasion.

But they are an unwanted crowd of people as per the Cambridge dictionary definition unless of course, you think they are welcome.

The number of illegal immigrants on the latest ‘small’ boats would count as a crowd

It is an invasion

Between 2018 and 2025, approximately 264,000 unauthorised arrivals were recorded. That's over a quarter of a million. Anyone who wants to keep this rolling on needs their head examining.

Just a reminder, our infrastructure is breaking down, with housing, healthcare, social care, education, water shortages and pollution, roads and railways all under pressure. Do we really want to increase our already huge population by allowing anyone in the world who needs help to come here? It's just not possible.

Casdon Tue 15-Sept-26 18:11:40

But nobody at all on this thread is saying that though, are they Chestnut? It’s just that some of us realise that it’s not as easy as turning off a tap, and that using emotive language just makes the people who use it look foolish. As a nation we have to own the issue, and support workable solutions, not just wave union jacks and make glib statements about how terrible it all is.

Maremia Tue 15-Sept-26 18:21:17

If that's the definition, then surely that's the meaning?

No, it’s the definition of invasion.

Its one definition.

There is actually a possible solution of using a remote UK owned island to process asylum seekers. This was successfully used by Australia. It would take away the incentives to risk their lives to get here.

There are no crowds. It is not a large number of people all at the same time. The migrants are managed from arrival, they do not invade anything. To repeat the fact, it is not an invasion.

Maybe you need to go to Specsavers! You must have seen rows and rows of them queuing to get off the lifeboats all the way down the gangways and across the tarmac.

It’s not a fact. It is your opinion,

Ah but Casdon describes it as ‘managed arrivals!’

It is not just my opinion.

‘Some political groups and commentators use the word "invasion" to describe the high numbers of arrivals. Experts and officials note that while the crossings create a serious political and policing challenge, the label is a rhetorical exaggeration rather than an accurate description of a military event.’

They were certainly ‘managed’ in Portsmouth. There were marquees, hot food stations change of clothes and a fleet of coaches etc. The red carpet was almost rolled out

Maremia Tue 15-Sept-26 21:32:39

How awful! Imagine treating them like human beings?
How very dare they.

They don’t just get off the boats and wander off into the sunset, they are managed, because they are taken to a receiving centre.

Documenting injuries, fractures, and psychological trauma from the "one in one out" pilot scheme raises serious humanitarian concerns. The findings presented to the French Assembly look very troubling.

What we don’t know from this account is whether the returned migrants were either trouble makers or bullied by other migrants or other people in the community where they were housed, so were selected for early return, or if they were mistreated by officials. I hope names and details are made available, there shoukd be records if either of the former two scenarios happened.

Good common sense post.
Let's get to the evidence. Not opinion

Harv1 Wed 16-Sept-26 13:46:20

I agree totally with invasion! And I don’t care what I get called for using the word.
If people feel so sorry for these invaders then please be happy enough to accept them into your home or surrounding areas and look after them at will .
Stop forcing them on the lower class ….

Asylum seekers awaiting deportation from the UK are housed in detention centres near to airports ready for removal e.g Brook House. Serious Incident Reports, healthcare assessment records, restraint records and witness statements will evidence organ and nature of injuries sustained. If such records have not been appropriately completed that is a breach of safeguarding.

If asylum seekers are bullying each other they should be seated and appropriately restrained in line with safeguarding processes. If still bullied and sustain injuries by other detainees that should be fully documented in both detainee records and potentially criminal allegations can be made though in reality both detainees are awaiting removal from the UK. If bullied and injured by detention centre staff that is a criminal offence and employees should be referred to the police for investigation and possible criminal charges alongside an internal disciplinary investigation.

Handover detention discharge records are completed for every asylum seeker reported, including their full detention and healthcare records.

Thus French authorities can cross reference injuries and health status on those discharge documents with their arrival clinical assessment.

The French authorities concerns t: “Consultations are revealing signs consistent with recent physical and psychological violence as well as the consequences of prolonged detention in conditions described as particularly degrading.”

I agree this needs investigation to determine facts of how this occurred.

LemonJam Wed 16-Sept-26 13:59:14

Detention centres is meant to be secure accommodation.

sazz1 Wed 16-Sept-26 14:09:38

I wonder if they are resisting the security officers when being deported and that's how they are getting injured? Restraint has always carried a risk of injury as I know from working where it was used. Seen staff with broken noses and bruises several times
I really hope it is accidental and not deliberately done. Regardless of my feelings on these people they don't deserve to be injured by staff and should be treated with respect

Delila Wed 16-Sept-26 14:13:05

I suppose it’s so much easier to argue minutely over the definition of a word, than to discuss the documented physical and psychological harms inflicted on failed asylum seekers returned to France from the UK under the “one-in-one-out” scheme?

WithNobsOnIt Wed 16-Sept-26 14:13:57

These people to me are still illegal immigrants and always will be. This return scheme was and always will be a load of old tut.

They shouldn't be in the country in the first place.

The Lefty Wokes will always sanctify these people because it makes them seem, feel and look moraly superior. Because they know better.

They can do no harm and are all deserving and wonderful. There are not to be judged in any way. And should be as priority for welfare, housing etc

The BBC and C4 and other media luvvies adore them and they are poured over and adored like a beloved family pet.

But the bigger issue and real problem here is that Immigration is being used as a distraction by the Govt away from the really pressing and crucial economic and social problems this country faces.

Incidentally. Due to where l live l have first hand experience and proof of illegal immigrants scams. Based around false identity, bogus companies being set up, illegal workers in takeaways and the sub letting of Social Housing,

TiggyW Wed 16-Sept-26 14:14:28

There are plenty of other safe countries between the UK and Africa/Afghanistan, etc. I wonder why illegal migrants choose to cross the Channel? 🤔Hmm…
I think it’s time for me to try doing something illegal! Perhaps
I’ll try entering France without my passport. Do you think they’d let me stay?
I think the UK would have more sympathy with the situation if the majority of migrants were not fit young men who trampled over the women and children to reach the shore.

Ray82 Wed 16-Sept-26 14:14:49

I tend to agree that these people should be returning to safe countries.I think we are unable to cope with our own population let alone thousands of mainly young men, most of whom we know nothing and their culture is very different from ours especially where women and girls are concerned

Olivebranch Wed 16-Sept-26 14:15:34

They could just stay in safe France. No time for economic migrants.
