What a terrible thing for the grandad to have to live with. He won't ever forgive himself. And yet he should try. It only takes a split second for a child to bolt, and it can happen to anyone.
His poor parents, they will be utterly devastated.
Those of us who look after our GC know how easy it is to lose sight of them, even for a second. There one minute and gone the next. I hope Granddad gets some support and understanding from those around him. Life is so very cruel at times. Poor little lad unable to even cry for help. RIP Noah.
One thing that puzzles me is that most children’s play areas are fenced in which helps keep the children safe. It sounds like this wasn’t so in this case and little Noah was able to run off. A dreadful outcome. My heart goes out to the family.
I am beginning to think there should be cctv around all park’s & entrances to parks. Especially now there are strangers near these parks. Checked ours out yesterday. Nope nothing like that. Not just to keep an eye on the youngsters, but after hour activities. People doing drugs, vandalism, etc. RIP little man 🧸
Sadly CCTV wouldn't have helped little Noah. The children's play area should be fenced off and that huge pond/lake as well.
Yes I agree. Imagine putting a park near a rural pond, especially with no fencing. At least services may have had a clue which direction he went in, but I suppose by the time they get access to footage it would have been too late anyway 😞
When my son was small, I let go of his hand for seconds to push my bag back over my shoulder. I reached down again and he was gone. I was in a large store, close to the open front doors with a busy road outside. He was found within a minute, holding the hand of a salesman and crying - evidently he had stepped back and gone behind a rail of clothing. I have never forgotten the feeling of sickness and panic for that moment - and that is how easy it is. My heart goes out to the family and to that poor grandfather, who will carry that and be haunted by it for the rest of his life.
I saw a small child wandering alone on a busy dual carriageway I turned my car around and got out and spoke to him.
He told me he was just going to the stream ( just 100 yards away!). He was insistent that he was fine and I didn’t want to physically try to stop him, luckily another man stopped and he called the police.
They came quickly and were checking for reports of missing children. The police motorcycle and uniforms distracted the child enough whilst they questioned me on where I had taken the child from and had I got immigration papers! ( USA).
It was fine once they had a missing child report, he was 3 and had walked over half a mile to get to the stream.
Children don’t always do what we expect of them and I feel deep sorrow for the grandparent the pain of loss and blame will feel unbearable.
