Principality of Piddington

No surprise that their symbolic referendum returned a vote to leave the UK. It won't make one jot of difference but it doesn't hurt to let AB know how strongly some people feel about the imminent arrival of 1,500 migrants on the doorstep of a village with 350 inhabitants.
AB has said there needs to be fairness in where these migrants are housed and says the boat arrivals are at a 7 year low. Boy, is he missing the point. Reduced boat arrivals or not, what many people are appalled at is the length of time it takes to vet those already here and the areas chosen for them to live while they wait are often inappropriate.
I really feel for the Piddington residents, especially women and young girls.

How would it pass health and safety in Piddington?

Graphite Wed 16-Sept-26 16:14:42

Why not read the comprehensive planning documents?

Not a chance

Piddington are getting all the publicity but have a thought for the village of Arncott adjacent to the depot. There is no accommodation on site it's all got to be built, water, drainage the lot. So unless it's all portacabins it's going to take a while.

The locals dont like it, tough , I wouldnt like it but migrants gave to go somewhere, if we are to continue hosting them we really need to increase the police supervision

It isn’t a prison and the asylum seekers living there will be free to go wherever they want. I think is what those living in Piddington are concerned about. 2.3 miles is walking distance for young fit males with time on their hands and little to do. Maybe it would be better if the asylum seekers there were confined to the barracks until their claims processed? They are here illegally.

How do you know if they are here illegally? They are not illegals until their claims are processed, and not all of them are.

Graphite Wed 16-Sept-26 16:42:20

Why? The site is east of the B4011 so closer to Piddington and north east of Arncott.

The image shows the proximity of the eastern boundaries to listed buildings in that village.

Yes Graphite...that is interesting reading. So the site was potentially earmarked from the early 2000's for AS. And this info quite easily sourced.

Is there a way that people can tell you that current levels of immigration aren't working for them that is acceptable. They have tried voting, demonstrations, etc - perhaps they could try the medium of interpretative dance and see if anyone pays attention to that.

fancythat Wed 16-Sept-26 16:54:24

Yes.

And people still wonder[and will for the next 10 years] why Reform[or Restore} or any different party has become the norm.
Here or elsewhere.

Plevey08 Wed 16-Sept-26 16:57:38

Well I suppose Galaxy it's for the electorate to really think about who they choose to vote for. Maybe don't fall for catchy self- promotion slogans.....always dodgy. And email your local MP re any concerns that you have both locally and the country.
But unfortunately there is no magic wand.

Maybe it would be better if the asylum seekers there were confined to the barracks until their claims processed? They are here illegally. - as others have pointed out we do not know if a person is here illegally until their application has been processed. We cannot be locking up innocent people.

Casdon Wed 16-Sept-26 16:58:52

If they understand the difficulties in stopping migration, I for one would be very pleased to have a conversation about how it could be achieved in a humane way which recognises the needs of the migrants as well as the native population. I’m absolutely fed up of the level of debate we are able to have on Gransnet because that doesn’t ever happen. Has it occurred to you that those who want to ‘stop the boats’ are completely disinterested in anything anybody else has to say? It takes two to tango.

They arrive here illegally.
Hence they are illegal.

sundowngirl Wed 16-Sept-26 17:01:40

Lemonjam- the town of Bicester might be 4.5 miles away from Piddington but the actual site is only 0.8 miles away.

Plevey08- under the Dublin agreement we received more immigrants than we sent back and even then there were very few. It would make very little difference with this influx

Basic fact: If they claim asylum on arrival, as nearly all of them do, they are not classed as illegal, but as asylum seekers. If their asylum claim is rejected, at that point they are in the country unlawfully.

fancythat Wed 16-Sept-26 17:09:33

True.

But most people know they arrive here illegally.
Whatever words are used.

I personally do not want to be treated by a doctor, or anyone else for that matter, who has arrived illegally.

Galaxy Wed 16-Sept-26 17:09:58

Why would they be interested. Over a decade they have been saying this isnt working and they are met with diversity is our strength, etc. So yes it takes both sides. And sorry but what did people think would happen. Some communities have experienced a demographic change that has been seismic really.
And when people are living this day by day it is quite tricky to be told to wait, its complex dont you know.
I think there is a clear choice, either the left do it and do it well, (and it isnt just about illegal immigration i am afraid) or a party you really wont like will do it.

fancythat Wed 16-Sept-26 17:10:34

My patience has gone with the whole thing.

Judging by things happening in the Uk, it has with countless others too.

fancythat Wed 16-Sept-26 17:11:20

And sorry but what did people think would happen

I think authorites have long known what would happen.

fancythat Wed 16-Sept-26 17:11:52

I think some think endless talk, will grind people down.
It doesnt.

Galaxy good post 👍

Plevey08 Wed 16-Sept-26 17:16:27

If we don't have cooperation with the EU we are in a much weaker position for fair, and most importantly safe routes. Which would lead to better vetting of potential immigration. Currently, due to Brexit we no longer have access to EU databases. There is a humane way, but it's going to take a long time.
IMO we need a stable, long-term government. We have a stable one...now we need to commit to the long term.

Plevey08 Wed 16-Sept-26 17:18:26

But you were using the argument that the Dublin agreement was the reason we couldn’t return these illegals immigrants. I was just pointing out it didn’t work well before Brexit

I think many people have no concept at all of the issues. We need real solutions, not ill conceived slogans which just rile people up who won’t think it through for themselves. It does my head in.
