No surprise that their symbolic referendum returned a vote to leave the UK. It won't make one jot of difference but it doesn't hurt to let AB know how strongly some people feel about the imminent arrival of 1,500 migrants on the doorstep of a village with 350 inhabitants.
AB has said there needs to be fairness in where these migrants are housed and says the boat arrivals are at a 7 year low. Boy, is he missing the point. Reduced boat arrivals or not, what many people are appalled at is the length of time it takes to vet those already here and the areas chosen for them to live while they wait are often inappropriate.
I really feel for the Piddington residents, especially women and young girls.

All the countries you mentioned in your post yesterday Cossy at 19 46pm all have one common denominator...they are all mainly Muslim countries. So the religion of peace is not so peaceful.
The population of all these counties amounts to millions of people we can't help them all without sinking ourselves.
We live in peace not because of an accident at birth...it was paid for with the lives of brave people who fought for it.
I think that’s a very unfair thing to say and untrue.
The utter ignorance and discrimination of some on this site actually appall me.
But that’s your choice and your call.

I'm not sure what "be kind stuff " is. If we lose our humanity we truly are sunk.
🙏🙏
“Yes it was horrific but not deliberate as no one knew they were there.“
It’s pretty clear many different people knew they were there, hence the arrests and subsequent prison sentences.
The trouble is the be kind stuff tends to be visited on others without any discussion. Piddington is a good example I suspect, we need to be kind to the asylum seekers, oh no we didnt mean here, we meant over there.

And I live within a ten minute drive from Manston. It seems to be working perfectly satisfactorily.
Just as RAF Wethersfield does, CLG.
All projects have costs, David, whether they go ahead or not. No different to domestic residents who pay architects for plans for an extension that doesn’t receive planning consent or their family plans alter because the family member they needed it for has died. It’s just a question of scale.
The Rwanda scheme cost over £700 million for what was confirmed, just weeks before Sunak announced the general election in 2024, was going to amount to around 200 places in a Kigali hostel.
For the Bicester site, over £10 million went on legal, planning, and site costs, extensive legal battles fighting local council objections, public inquiries, administrative overheads, and site preparation.
£2 million to external advisors, financial and procurement.
£8 million for preliminary layouts, site master plans, and architectural design fees.
£8 million in termination payments to the commercial contractor as compensation when the project was cancelled.
Just a few years later, the site was slated for a deportation centre until it was cancelled as part of Tory austerity.
My point is, using the site for migrants for one reason or another has been on the cards for that site for over 25 years.
Long term residents and more recent arrivals to the village will have been aware of this. You take a risk when you move anywhere that development plans could change the local environment, whether its a noisy new road, a housing development on that green field you used to look over, a new school, pylons bringing renewable energy, the wind turbines and solar farms that generate it or simply your neighbour’s plans to extend their home. Our environments have to change to meet all of our needs.
I don’t know why it is part of human nature to think the worst. Things are rarely as bad as people imagine or indeed bad at all.
What are the options if you live in Piddington? Either assume the worst and move now. Wait and see whether the change does genuinely have a detrimental affect on your life, in which case you move then. Or wait and find that it makes little or no difference to you life.
The most ridiculous story I read was of the woman who says she litter-picks regularly in the village and will no longer feel safe to do it. That’s just madness.
Someone will bring up property prices but what bothers one person doesn’t necessarily bother another. People have lived in that village for years with a military base of 2,600 personnel and a prison on its doorstep.
Instead of listening to the politically-motivated scaremongering of Reform and far-right activists they should be listening to people who live near migrant facilities who could assure them it’s nothing to worry about.
Maybe Harry will offer to be their Prince...

That is an untrue and unkind thing to say.
Well done Cossy for challenging this.
Muslims are no less and no more peaceful than any other religion.
Putin, one of our world’s biggest threats isn’t Muslim, neither is Trump presently waging an illegal war on mainly Muslim people.
But let’s not let a few extremely relevant facts take away from someone’s prejudices.
Just to add my father fought in the Second World War against fascists who were slaughtering a group of people based entirely upon their religion, 6 million I believe, which happened because of people’s prejudices.
I was referring to the countries mentioned in Cossy's post which are mainly Muslim countries are they not! Russia wasn't mentioned...so what is untrue about my post? Yes I know all about WW2.

I was challenging your statement that the religion of peace is not so peaceful rather than the countries listed by Cossy.

What is untrue, unfair and simply pure discrimination, is your slur on Muslims.
Frankly, I find it deplorable and disgusting.
I have worked with, beside and for many Muslims. The Civil Service employs many, so do many large banks, I worked for both.
Sorry, but I find that slur against Muslims quite disgusting, it says far more about you than it does about Muslims.
We probably have Muslims on this very site.
If you don’t understand the mention of both Putin and Trump and the inference of Hitler, then that’s hardly Fallingstar’s fault.
Would you like me to explain…
It wasn't a slur on Muslim people it's their religion I have a problem with. Are people not allowed to criticise a religion anymore or do we have to just accept it's teachings like the oppressed women of Afghanistan. I'm not a lover of organised religion and think people should have a choice to be religious or not and not be forced into it at birth. I should be able to criticise a religion without being insulted on a forum.
From what I understand the word "Islam" comes from the Arabic root s-l-m, which shares the same linguistic origin as salaam, meaning peace.
Perhaps that is why Yanda mentioned that Islam is called a religion of peace. She also quite rightly pointed out that many of the countries are war-torn countries.
Is freedom of speech not allowed on here?

Islam has different branches.
Just because we might know people who are Muslims, our colleagues, our friends, in some cases our relatives, does not mean that the Islamic rulers in some countries are not hardline, misogynistic and also repressive against those of a different branch of Islam.
There was a report on the news yesterday of babies and children who are dying of malnutrition in Afghanistan; the women are not allowed to work and there is not enough money to feed families.
The pictures were pitiful.

Freedom of speech is only allowed if you agree with the lefties, otherwise you get called disgusting!

But surely being able to say that you think someone's opinion is disgsting is a perfect example of freedom of speech in action, whatever the political stance of either party!
Honestly, if I spoke of Christianity in the same vein, then many of you would jump down my throat.
I’m not a great believer in “prescribed” religion of all types, despite being “christened” we chose not to christen our babies, on the basis that they could decide when adults.
I can only apologise, if I misunderstand, the post as a criticism of Muslims.

Well said JenniRen
We should be able to criticise certain Muslim countries or countries that are any faith or none.
Also have to point out, that I do not think those people who disagree with me are “disgusting” or “deplorable”, it’s just their opinions I was criticising.
Oreo I think it would be slighter fairer to say that leaders and governments of certain countries certainly should be criticised, faith or no faith, not necessarily the those living in those countries facing atrocities.
Yes.

A woman, Rachel, who has lived in Piddington for 20 years, was interviewed on News Night on Tuesday, and LBC yesterday. She is married to an Afro-Caribbean man, has two mixed race children, and her family has never received any racism during that time.
Rachel said that the direction of the campaign had become increasingly engaged with far right figures and rhetoric. It seems that one of the organisers of the campaign had approached Elon Musk and Donald Trump for help. Rachel initially thought this was a joke, but it became apparent that the campaigner had indeed approached Musk and Trump.
Rachel said that representatives of Reform had made their presence known in Piddington, and who, in Rachel's opinion, were using the village to further their own gains.
Unfortunately, this has led on to far right figures, such as Danny (Tommo) Thomas, to feel that they are welcome in Piddington, and also surrounding villages, where anti-immigration fears seem to be much focus of attention at the moment.
What Rachel said in her interviews seemed to be authentic and, if so, it would appear that Piddington's campaign was not, as claimed, apolitical.I find this shocking, but not at all surprising.
The people of Piddington did/do have legitimate concerns, but they are very naive if they don’t see how they’ve be “played” or “used” by Farage and his ilk.
We are all ‘played’ by politicians of all ilks.
I have looked up the Essex lorry deaths and those responsible, ie the people smugglers, were all prosecuted as you stated but what point are you trying to make about this please in relation to the original post?
