What a breath of fresh air!

Definitely not what I would call him. To me he seems very old Labour, not good

I know that I am talking to the wrong demographics but 60%+ people in the U.K. agree that closer working is needed asap.

Good news

gg13 I’m pleased to read that you agree with AB about closer working. You are one of the vast majority.

We have never stopped close cooperation in defence, EU countries have had high ranking military personnel in JCHQ before and after the UK left the EU.

Indeed.

Great news.
Closer ties makes perfect sense, being isolated is not advisable in these tough times.

Many would agree with you. I would like us to rejoin but realise that is far too complex and expensive to do this. Also who has the stomach for another referendum that would be hijacked by the likes of Farage and manipulated by Russia. No thanks.

I agree with GG. But then I voted remain.

Elegran Mon 12-Oct-26 17:20:46

Closer co-operation would be a good step forward and would make things like mutual trading standards, exchanges between schools, travelling and so on easier and more efficient. Maybe it would lead to rejoining later on, maybe not, but it is still worth doing. We are geographically a part of Europe and if it is done carefully we could work together without losing our independence (which is what puts many people off the idea).

Closer cooperation secured over the next three years yes.

I would like to see all parties transparently include in heir party manifestos in three years time for next GE whether they would consider proposing rejoining the EU at any stage in the following successive years- by referendum or otherwise.

That way positions and intentions of all UK political parties clear- plus it would flush out EU response.

Absolutely!

I’m afraid the distance between the UK and the USA is increasing rapidly - and I don’t mean the distance across the sea!

We are European and have a much longer history with those countries.

I voted Remain and would do so again.

So far, Andy Burnham is doing well. It helps that he has a good communications team and has a positive attitude generally.

MartavTaurus Mon 12-Oct-26 18:35:33

I agree that closer working is needed, but that our fully rejoining the EU is highly unlikely in the near future.

If Andy Burnham can pull it off, along with everything else he has in mind, that's great. But I can see EU members understandably wanting to set new rules that favour themselves over the UK, and this might then take ages to agree on.

OldFrill Mon 12-Oct-26 19:09:22

Is this not exactly the same as Starmer's "EU Reset".

AGAA4 Mon 12-Oct-26 19:28:49

It is important that we form closer ties with the EU. I don't believe the US is an ally especially under Trump.
I would be against rejoining at this time.

Cossy Mon 12-Oct-26 19:52:35

I would LOVE to re/join, but this isn’t the time.

Untold damage has been done by Brexit.

In my very humble opinion, Andy Burnham has to act as well as speak.

Lots of us have our hopes pinned on him to do his very best for every single UK citizen.

ginnycomelately Mon 12-Oct-26 19:56:18

Yes please we need closer ties with Europe

valdali Mon 12-Oct-26 20:06:30

Yes, it's time for getting closer to Europe again.

I'm no economist, but when Europe is feeling threatened, US global influence has imploded & most countries are struggling to maintain central ground in their governments, it might be an excellent time to begin mentioning rejoining - not to commit to it as set in stone, but I think France, Portugal & spain, Holland & Denmark would all welcome the idea of UK rejoining at the moment, for the same sort of reasons that we would welcome closer ties.
