Disgraceful that British people looking to rent are being outbid by our own government so they can house asylum seekers

No doubt The Sun will be condemned as being an unreliable news source but I'll leave this here anyway. This is from 3 days ago:

Clearsprings Ready Homes, which operates on a £7billion taxpayer-funded contract, is offering over-the-odds rent to guarantee housing for new arrivals in the UK.
One landlord in Southwark, South London, told The Sun he had been offered £4,500 a month for their three-bedroom flat.Clearsprings also said it would cover bills, council tax and maintenance.

The offer was more than double the £1,790 put up by the local council for the same property to house social housing tenants.

The Sun understands Clearsprings is targeting landowners who typically rent to students or local authorities, as well as people fleeing domestic abuse.
One landlord, who provides properties to Southwark Council, said he found Clearsprings’ offer “bizarre” because both bids were ultimately taxpayer-funded.
He said: “The whole thing is nuts. I was approached earlier this year by Clearsprings Ready Homes. * They have a regional contract with the Home Office to house migrants in hotels, but they are now seeking to relocate many migrants in residential accommodation.*
“I already rent to Southwark Council, and they are able to offer significantly more than the local authority, which to me is bizarre. The council has a ceiling on what they are allowed to pay landlords like myself.

For a three-bed flat I get £1,790 from the local authority to house families, while I would rent it to Clearsprings for £4,500 per month. I didn’t go with them because it would have meant terminating my contract with Southwark Council and putting families at serious risk of homelessness. I am not prepared to do that. But many landlords just see it as an opportunity to earn more, and just go with them.“Also, the standard that they require is way beyond what we would provide to local authorities or private tenants — and they are meeting those ridiculously high requirements with taxpayers’ money.”

Clearsprings Ready Homes has a ten-year deal worth around £7billion to house asylum seekers in southern England and Wales.

It's probably all just right wing propaganda, stirring up trouble though isn't it?

Yes it is disgraceful.

The story of the Southwark landlord may be an historic one but it is still very much a current issue.

There are a number of articles on this subject online, many are within the last 48 hours, it also been on some news channels.

It is wrong that yet again asylum seekers are “ jumping the queue”

As Graphite's 23/6/23 BBC link shows- old news and over a year before Labour came into Government!

Thank you for clarifying, I won’t bother posting further.

Zia YusUf is well known for his fiery, aggressive, attacking, polarising, anti asylum seeker, factually incorrect commentary. He evens gets into trouble in his own party and that's saying a lot! They wont even let him stand for election as an MP.

I don't go looking at Yusuf's Facebook page myself. I would imagine his Facebook page appeals to Reform supporters though- each to their own. mainly.

My SiL was offered much more in rent if he took single male migrants. He didn't. He would only accept families.

Simple, money talks. Humans don't matter.

To answer your question...yes I do think it's wrong. No wonder people are angry...imagine losing your home so they can house an alleged AS.

Oreo Thu 22-Oct-26 12:52:24

I believe it was what did happen in an effort not to use hotels to house them.
Whether it’s happening still, I don’t know.Old military bases are now being used so that normal rented housing and hotels won’t be needed.

I'm afraid you'll have to ask Zia Zusuf I just copied this off Facebook.

Please provide a link or a source so we can read this story in its entirety.

Thank you for highlighting this.

I used to work in partnership with local councils and have some councillors friends locals.

It’s my understanding, and I may be incorrect;

Aslyum Seekers are allocated housing whilst waiting to be processed. This will be government funded shared accommodation. Asylum Seekers, until given leave to remain are not legally entitled to claim housing benefit, because legally they have no recourse to public funding. ie Mainstream welfare benefits.

Once given both leave to remain and right to work they have to immediately leave their govt funded accommodation and in some boroughs may be entitled to register for social housing, where they will be able to bid for property on the same basis as all other people on said list.

I’m not sure what you mean, when you refer to “a home office contractor”?

Social housing and funding (which comes from central government, directly from The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, MHCLG), is a local councils responsibility for their own boroughs. Some local authorities has passed responsibility to local housing associations.

Hardly a new story - just a Daily Mail cub reporter rage-baiting as usual.

Of course, Reform's own chief rage-baiter is only too pleased to spread the story ... and now you are doing the same.

It's old news.

BBC reporting over three years ago.

Just read about this I think it's an absolute disgrace I feel like a second class citizens in my own country. Anyone else agree this is wrong

A Home Office contractor is offering British landlords over DOUBLE what councils pay, if they’ll house ‘asylum seekers’ instead of vulnerable British families.

A landlord in Southwark was offered £4,500 a month for a three-bed flat.

He already rents it to the council for £1,790 to house a local family at risk of homelessness.

The contractor offered to pay bills, council tax and maintenance fees.

It would've left the landlord over £30,000 better off.

Labour are outbidding British people so they can house men who broke into our country in your community instead.

Reform will end this madness.

We will take our country back.
