Are we heading towards a war?

Sorry about actually twice in the last sentence, but for some odd reason today it is not possible to read a post through before posting it.

Or not possible on my computer, at any rate. When I tried, what I had just written about books disappeared completely, so I wasn't risking that again.

As far as I remember the first threat of war that I was old enough to understand was in 1956.

Every decade since has had similar rumours, until the collapse of the Soviet Union. Not that fighting stopped, but as it was mainly taking place in Africa and Latin America, most of us in Europe managed happily to ignore that the world was not at peace.

Even after the end of the Cold War, there were two Gulf Wars, flare ups in N. Ireland, in the Middle East etc. etc.

So yes, we may be heading towards a war, or we may not.

Fortunately, Europe has at long last woken up and remember the Latin tag " Si vis pacem, para bellum!" meaning "If you desire peace, prepare for war"

So actually the chances of peace are actually better now than at any time after the fall of the Berlin War.

I wanted to keep it simple. Didn’t want to confuse the OP anymore than they are.

I was thinking of those poor people that had just been rescued from the Belarus area, they had resorted to eating weeds, I honestly don't think or want to survive like that.
Also little things that keep happening like the freezer thermostat going haywire in Europe over the weekend, the air traffic computers back in the summer, banks saying they have problem with payments.
I just think someone is messing about with computer systems to see if it's possible to do something on a bigger scale eventually.

Belarus isn’t an area. Belarus is an independent country 🤦🏼‍♀️

Belarus is an independant country as long as they support Russia, any move to the west will see an immediate take over by Russia.

That Russian oil is roaming the high seas and nobody seems to be buying.

I read (forgotten where) that of anyone buys this Russian oil they can be prosecuted due to the current embargo.

Hopefully they will continue to float around on the high seas until they have had enough and return to whence they came,

The tanker owners have been warned tgat if they dock they will be prosecuted.
After the outcome today their problem is: where can we find a buyer 😂

Brazil takes large quantities of Russian oil they don't care about sanctions at all China and India are also big buyers, if the US rejects it there are plenty of other buyers.

I don't think we have anything that Russia would want.

Land.
Territory.
Power.

And probably 7 other things we havent even thought of.

Those sorts of people do not think like we do.

And at the end of the day, they dont even need a "valid" reason.

I don't think we have anything that Russia would want. Our oil and gas supplies are nearly exhausted and we don't have the sort of precious minerals that are needed by other countries. Why would they bother with us.

Tell that to the Baltic states, they are very concerned and we are committed to defending them, thats where any escalation will start, we will get drawn in for certain.

We were once a great power and still punch above our weight in world affairs. We are on the western side of the east/west divide, a member of NATO, an ally of UKRAINE.

Possession of valuable materials, is not the only reason for seeing another country as an enemy. North Sea oil may have peaked, but there is still a very large amount still there. Our expertise in exploiting hydrocarbons in complex and difficult situations offshore is world beating.

These are a just a few of the many reasons Russia sees us as the enemy.

More and more cyber attacks I imagine, which is a war of sorts. We are seeing it already in the freezer meltdowns and threatened bombs on aircraft. All we can do is have some emergency supplies and cash! Maybe cash will be king again, this is certainly not a time to phase it out.

Cyber warfare could be a bunch of teenage hackers.

Not heading towards a war, in the sense of a shooting match war, instead the cyber war has already started. hackers taking control of freezers in shops. the cutting of Nordstream, political assassinations in your opponents streets, disruptive drones. This is the war we are already fighting

If we are thinking of Ukraine escalating, the longer it continues the stronger Russia will get, there is no sign of weakness and even US is set to buy oil.

That war needs to end.

I dont think the media are at all bothered about making alarming headlines.
How they sell newspapers and get click-bait.

Not sure governments are above such tactics either.

I prepare, but in heart of hearts, apart from power outages, natural disasters, the rest I rather take with a pinch of salt. Personally.

And if there is a war, well most dont come anywhere near us.
That is not to say it is not a catastrophe elsewhere, for some.

62Granny Tue 03-Nov-26 15:00:50

I think we are, perhaps not necessarily an armed combat style but definitely something is going on behind closed doors, first it was get ready for possible El Nino type weather , then a possible power surge, get supplies in for 3/5 days , then possibly longer , now they are saying about an emergency medical pack, this is possibly the most worrying for a lot of people on life saving prescription medication as prescription are only given for a set period of time, usually 28 days, so fine if you have just picked one up but not so good if something happens on day 20, ( the day I usually reorder) . They seem to be drip feeding us every few days something new crops up on a headline and it's not just the Daily Mail and Express but it was which magazine today.
