Smileless, could you possibly rephrase , and say that gambling on e.g. football is is much more okay because it does not depend on cruel use of animals?

Gambling is 'ok' as long as it doesn't lead to an addiction, likewise alcohol but cruelty to animals is never ok.

I havnt heard of placing bets on bull fighting.

The evils off gambling is nothing to do with horse racing or football or anything else, it's the addiction thats the problem, the illusion that you might get lucky. All gambling is commercial the regulation is far too lax, especially online where it's too easy to borrow online then fritter it away online.

As for the horses, if it wasn't for the gambling there would be no horse racing, the industry would collapse. That wouldnt bother me bother me one jot, it would destroy a lot of jobs and leave a big hole in tax revenue.

Neither do I. The reference to both in the OP does seem to conflate the two.
I don’t like gambling especially online, because it can lead to addiction. However the pleasure my late MIL got from an afternoon of bingo with her friends at the local “age concern” group helped as she became less mobile.
(Yes I know it’s now Age UK but it wasn’t back then.)

If a punter goes into a betting shop and puts, say, 20 quid on a horse and it comes last then he's lost his 20 quid. But that's all. It's called gambling. Sleazy and sordid.

If someone plays the stock market and loses when the world markets take a dive because a half-crazed lunatic like Trump picks a fight with the Pope, slags off NATO, derides assorted world leaders, tries to be Jesus Christ, etc, then it often leads to many people losing their jobs and possibly entire industries collapsing.

But that's called market forces (commercial gambling in other words) which makes it sound respectable - not sleazy and sordid like gambling.

What the Hell is the difference?

I guess the difference is the effect gambling has on ordinary and humble people as opposed to those who can afford to "lose".

I don't think advertising gambling should be allowed. Period. cut off the life support system
