I remember it by thinking that 'different' has an 'f' in it as does 'from'!

I wish you had been, Bags! Mind you, I did have a pretty nice succession of well motivated mature students. It was the reluctant teenagers that got up my nose!

Bags Mon 25-Jun-12 11:04:10

They would have sunk into me if I'd been one of them smile

Annobel Mon 25-Jun-12 10:36:59

Thanks Bags - I often wonder if any of these nuggets of advice sank into any of my students!

Bags Mon 25-Jun-12 10:18:55

That's a good way of showing the difference between the right construction and the wrong one, anno smile

Annobel Mon 25-Jun-12 10:10:16

You'd never say 'I differ to you' or 'I differ than you'. Ergo: 'different from'.

Bags Mon 25-Jun-12 09:55:02

Many Americans say "different than".

Sh! (whispering) I have to say that I am glad the England is out of the Euro thingy as that will probably mean I'll hear fewer mentions on the news of what England (singular noun) are(plural verb) doing. Of course it won't stop them talking about the Government are… hmm

Welcome, IdaMae!
Yes, it has been mentioned already, along with many other instances of bad grammar which crop up all too regularly these days.
Have a look at the Pedants' Corner list on the Forums page and you'll be able to add your moans to whichever thread suits you! smile

And aren't you right!

Welcome, IdaMae! Enjoy pedants' corner and the rest of GN. (Note apostrophe in the right place!)

IdaMae Sun 24-Jun-12 20:35:43

Fed up with hearing 'different to' - has this been said already? My first post and it's a moan. Feels good though.
