angryIf I had a fiver (even £1) for every time someone on TV gushes this over-used word, I could afford to give up my pension! Do you remember Zara Phillips at the Sports Personality of The Year Awards? It's been downhill ever since. I lost count this evening on Strictly, but pleeeease somebody use another adjective!!!
Is there another word which has the same effect on you?

Maybe Specki4eyes, but the one that gets me is desolé, which is often delivered with a shrug and a smirk....

Mamie Sun 18-Nov-12 16:44:41

Désolé that should have two accents, tricky, slidey finger stuff on the ipad!

Amazing is a splendid word but only when applied to something which is truly amazing. The problem is when it's applied to things that are actually routine, ordinary, what was anticipated/expected, etc.

Amazing means something that is stupendously astonishing, completely astounding, not something that is quite nice or moderately surprising.

j05 I've always referred to most things as fab just a carry on from my teen years but it is always understood and appreciated by who ever I am referring too,but I like amazing also.

Nonu Sun 18-Nov-12 17:00:49

I like the word "amazing" think it ecletic !! wink

That Sports Personality Award was cringe making, but what upset me about it was that I've seen Zara interviewed many times and she's incredibly witty; she really was shocked to win it, although she very much deserved to. Her boyfriend suffered for years on the rugby pitch afterwards, with cries of 'amazing' everytime he handled the ball.

As a nation, we seem to have changed, in the course of about half a century from understatement to hyperbole.

absentgrana Sun 18-Nov-12 17:17:17

That's amazing annodomini. grin

Nonu Sun 18-Nov-12 17:33:22

Absent ! grin

annodomini Sun 18-Nov-12 18:07:38

Ab fab, absent.

Ella46 Sun 18-Nov-12 18:11:46

absent What has happened to you today? Only a couple of days ago you confessed to having no sense of humour, and today there's been no stopping you! grin grin

Wheniwasyourage Sun 18-Nov-12 18:50:49

What about "sneak preview"? Surely it's possible to have a preview of something without subterfuge?

jO5 Sun 18-Nov-12 18:54:03

You can't beat 'fantastic' though.

Nelliemoser Sun 18-Nov-12 19:20:02

Oh my God ...Oh my God ...Oh my God ...Oh my God ... ad infinitum.

FlicketyB Mon 19-Nov-12 17:31:42

'Looking forward'. Whats wrong with 'in the future'. Although I did hear someone yesterday talk about 'In the future looking forward' and I did toy with what the future would be like if we looked back rather than forward.

Ana Mon 19-Nov-12 17:34:39

'At this moment in time'...in other words, 'now'!

Mishap Mon 19-Nov-12 17:35:42

"On a daily basis" - what's wrong with "every day"? - why does this irritate me? - am I turning into Disgusted of Tonbridge Wells? - can this be reversed? - is it all downhill now?

gracesmum Mon 19-Nov-12 18:06:23

"Moving forward" - seems to get added to just about every pronouncement, I'm not sure I even know what it means.

Ella46 Mon 19-Nov-12 18:27:01

Absolutely!!

annodomini Mon 19-Nov-12 18:48:51

'I can't wait'. Why not?

janeainsworth Mon 19-Nov-12 20:40:52

I get irritated during a news broadcast when we are told that a tragedy, or an atrocity 'took place' eg 'the bombings took place at midday'.
They don't take place.
They happen.
Ceremonies like weddings and funerals take place, but not accidents or other traumatic events.

AlieOxon Mon 19-Nov-12 21:13:34

Child 'I can't wait for Christmas!' Mum (me) 'What are you going to do then?'

Oh, and what about the next 'MUST SEE' film....

jeni Mon 19-Nov-12 22:11:25

Not to be missed. What happens if you do?

AlieOxon Tue 20-Nov-12 11:02:23

....you miss it?

gracesmum Tue 20-Nov-12 11:05:35

Or "must have" fashion items?
And if I am being really picky - "to die for" - not funny.
