angryIf I had a fiver (even £1) for every time someone on TV gushes this over-used word, I could afford to give up my pension! Do you remember Zara Phillips at the Sports Personality of The Year Awards? It's been downhill ever since. I lost count this evening on Strictly, but pleeeease somebody use another adjective!!!
Is there another word which has the same effect on you?

Amazing is a splendid word but only when applied to something which is truly amazing. The problem is when it's applied to things that are actually routine, ordinary, what was anticipated/expected, etc.

Amazing means something that is stupendously astonishing, completely astounding, not something that is quite nice or moderately surprising.

Désolé that should have two accents, tricky, slidey finger stuff on the ipad!

Mamie Sun 18-Nov-12 16:42:24

Maybe Specki4eyes, but the one that gets me is desolé, which is often delivered with a shrug and a smirk....

ninathenana Sun 18-Nov-12 16:38:51

hero...................grossly over used

gracesmum Sun 18-Nov-12 16:33:38

None of them heard as often!

jO5 Sun 18-Nov-12 16:29:36

Nope!

None of 'em sound as good as 'amazing'.

gracesmum Sun 18-Nov-12 16:27:56

Well I think there are plenty of synonyms for "amazing" - wonderful, great, fantastic, unforgettable, unique, terrific, magnificent, astounding, overwhelming, marvellous, splendid..... to name a few. There are of course shades of meaning and different words will be more or less appropriate depending on the circumstances. I would find it refreshing if people could come up with more exact descriptions for their emotions instead of lumping everything into the "amazing" pigeonhole.

jO5 Sun 18-Nov-12 16:19:06

"spiralling out of control" is amazingly descriptive. grin

jO5 Sun 18-Nov-12 16:18:33

I like that one - "thinking outside the box".

Actually I think "amazing" is just fine. If a word sums up a feeling, what's wrong with using it. If everyone is feeling the same thing, then the word will be well used.

Do you really expect people to come up with different words for the same emotion all the time?

glammanana Sun 18-Nov-12 16:14:36

"Thinking out of the Box" whats all that about ?

specki4eyes Sun 18-Nov-12 16:09:38

The French have a much more subtle way of using superlatives - my lovely French neighbour described washing her 102 year old mother-in-law's soiled bloomers as 'pas tres interessant' (not very interesting) and when something is truly amazing they say its 'terrrible'. Young Brits have latched on to 'wicked' meaning 'good' but there it seems to stop. Or am I a completely out of touch ex-pat? Hate 'ex-pat' too. smile

kittylester Sun 18-Nov-12 16:07:24

It's absolutely disgusting, which crops up all the time on our local news from people who are expecting compensation for something!

jeni Sun 18-Nov-12 15:28:16

At this present moment on time!

AlieOxon Sun 18-Nov-12 14:59:39

....or the bottom line?

AlieOxon Sun 18-Nov-12 14:53:37

On the level playing field?

Ana Sun 18-Nov-12 13:53:29

I'm just 'trying to come to terms' with all this!

absentgrana Sun 18-Nov-12 13:51:12

Step change – hoppity skip.
Sea change – glug, glug (for the third time).

annodomini Sun 18-Nov-12 13:48:09

Why is everything 'spiralling' out of control?

nightowl Sun 18-Nov-12 12:44:31

I can't stand 'from the get go' and if anyone 'gives me a heads up' I might just strangle them angry

absentgrana Sun 18-Nov-12 07:51:39

Incredible about something that is wholly believable.

Riverwalk Sun 18-Nov-12 07:50:11

It's a no-brainer.

It took me a long time to realise that it means the opposite of what I thought!

MiceElf Sun 18-Nov-12 07:44:46

It's ' our reporter 'caught up with' ' some dull celebrity that really irritates me.
