Pedants' corner

Over used unnessary phrases

Basically, at this moment in time, in my opinion I think some phrases are totally overused in conversation. To be frank and not to put too finer point on it, it seems to me that as we reduce our use of vowels to text we are increasing the number of words we use when speaking.

I'm not being funny but are there any overused phrases that drive you insane?

grin

Oh yes, yes ,yes lily i will try to work that in as often as possible. flog it to death even

Lilygran Thu 29-Nov-12 08:02:12

I like 'It isn't rocket surgery'.

No, we don't correct the spellings or grammar of other members. We just say in a light-hearted way the little sayings that we find mildly annoying. (Should I be flattered that anyone bothers to research/remember my previous posts?)

Pedant's corner obviously not just the naughty corner for those ex-teachers who have a compulsion to correct the spelling and grammar of other members. That is such a big no-no round here
'Tis also a pleasant place where, from time to time, much merriment may be experienced.

Someone asked me how I was at a meeting of, ahem, people older than me, the other day. I answered: "Good, thank you" without even meaning to. The ROT has started grin

What point are you making, Sel?

Twice, I have been asked by the local paper for a comment about one of our DD's achievements. On both occasions I was reported as having said We are over the moon. I wish to make it clear that this phrase has never, in my entire lifetime, crossed my lips. I did gave the reporter journalist Numpty a few well chosen words which perfectly expressed our sentiments, but obviously they were not fulsome enough and I have been presented to the local public not as the proud mother of two talented daughters but as the cow who jumped over the moon - twice!

Sel Wed 28-Nov-12 23:08:58

Greatnan you didn't like 'The university of Life' either.

Greatnan Wed 28-Nov-12 22:29:30

Grannylin Wed 28-Nov-12 20:49:31

Damn. ....we all agree

Grannylin Wed 28-Nov-12 20:48:57

I think we ought to celebrate that well agree grin

Sel Wed 28-Nov-12 20:43:16

BAnanas I am actually laughing, or ROTFL grin I remember at one time Little Britain with their 'Vicky Pollard' defined or echoed some aspects of language. I guess it's moved on to reality talent shows. Maybe something to thank Simon Powell for?

BAnanas Wed 28-Nov-12 20:20:11

Do you know what? I was like well vexed by sel but I've like so moved on, I've been on a journey and I'm in a better place right now So deal with it babe at the end of the day you can't hurt me no more end of

Ella46 Wed 28-Nov-12 19:56:31

It's given me a good laugh anyway! grin

Sel Wed 28-Nov-12 19:55:46

Ana hopefully smile

Ana Wed 28-Nov-12 19:51:13

Might you be over-thinking this a bit, Sel? We're only taking the mickey about over-used words and phrases (many of which we've probably used ourselves). Pedants' Corner is a bit of a mickey-take as well...smile

BAnanas Wed 28-Nov-12 19:49:09

OTT be damned bring it on

Sel Wed 28-Nov-12 19:45:49

Isn't language dynamic? I love the changes and would hate to feel, in real life that I was being judged - sorry about the 'in real life' but I mean as opposed to this cyber world. I have picked up many phrases from my children and people I come into contact with of many nationalities. Is that wrong? Language is about communication, that's all.

For interest I looked up 'pedant'

ped·ant
[ped-nt] Show IPA

noun
1.
a person who makes an excessive or inappropriate display of learning.

2.
a person who overemphasizes rules or minor details.

3.
a person who adheres rigidly to book knowledge without regard to common sense.

4.
Obsolete . a schoolmaster.

Ducking here for the 'get off our thread' responses smile

Ella46 Wed 28-Nov-12 19:43:34

At this moment in time there are 5, yes 5! threads on the Active list under the heading Pedant's Corner !!!!

Are we perhaps getting a little OTT about things? grin

BAnanas Wed 28-Nov-12 19:40:05

You might be gutted Ella 46, but I'm devastated I'm off to do some copious crying now I'm doin it for me nan!

Ana Wed 28-Nov-12 19:34:40

and time to come to terms with it, or make sense of it.

FlicketyB Wed 28-Nov-12 19:31:57

What you need now is closure

BAnanas Wed 28-Nov-12 19:31:44

Yes you're right Ana we are all in this together, on a journey a roller-coaster of emotions innit
